I’ve used the medium Alice pack and the large Alice pack and LBE since 1982 and I’ve never had a clip come loose. Never heard of anyone else having problems with their clips I always take needle nose pliers and put a little bit of a bend in every clip so that I have to force the clip point into the bottom and once it’s there, it’s there for good.

Hi, I just thought I’d send this along, I know of two surplus stores that sell USGI slide on padded shoulder straps that have loop on the back that you just slide over your current straps. They come two to a set. Ones Moore Militaria, the other one is Joe’s Army Navy Surplus. I hope that you can use this!

Don't forget to not only hydrate the day of your hike, but the day before as well. If you don't drink water the day before, it doesn't matter how much water you drink on the hike, you'll suffer.

In New Hampshire it gets in the 90’s in the summer. We just go swimming then. Don’t forget about the “w” wearing! What you wear does matter in the summer. Just wearing a backpack heats up your back. In the heat I drink about a liter every mile to two. I carry 5 liters. lol it’s heavy but it’s important to be able to camel up. You can’t always rely on having a water source by your camping… I’d say 1 water, 2 weight, 3 wearing, 4 weather, 5 waiting. Like waiting for the heat of mid day to go down before you head out again. 6 wetting. lol your back is going to be soaked for sweat and your backpack. Take lots of breaks with your pack off. It really helps….

It’s only been in the 70’s last week and this week till Wednesday, then hit 90 🤦♂️🤬. Number 4 is the best one, lol. In the military years ago, we had a thing called “red flag” days (I think that was the term, lol. Depending on the temperature, you could only work/train so long then get in shade and rest for a specific amount of time. Maybe that could be used/modified for when you’re hiking? Just a thought. Finally, I think someone mentioned it above, but if I’m going to be out in the heat, I try and drink as much water as I can before I get started. Also, to help with dehydration, I have read that pickle juice is good. I haven’t tried it mind you 😂

when pitching an emergency shelter drop one corner a couple of inches to create a run off then if you've got an open pot pan etc you can catch the run off , of course capacity has to be balanced against weight but did you know Nalgene has a 1.5 litre bottle all dimensions identical except for height
@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival13 күн бұрын
Yep, lots of ways to catch water, especially in a torrential downpour lol. I did not know that about Nalgene...

I’ve played with using my Mountain Smith Day lumbar waist pack, combined with a canteen setup & pouch & maybe my haversack. Your body vents a lot of heat off your back & it really helps if you don’t cover it with gear.🥵

That is does. I like to experiment with several packs to see which one works best

I subscribe to Blackie Thomas (KZfaqr) on hot weather. Also being in Florida, time of day is key. Make the most of daylight particularly morning’s first light. Do your heavy lifting/pushing distance on the cooler hours of the day. STOP when the heat approaches your body temperature. Seriously stop all strenuous activity and just hang out or rest as the peak heat hours pass. As the sun starts to set and then the temperature drops, resume until you have just enough daylight to set up camp. Just my two cents. . .

It also good to stay well hydrated and especially before any outing. I generally do my walks with 20 to 30 lbs for several miles. But im used to carrying weight.

This trash can idea is a solid inspiration for my motorcycle sissy bar with a conventional pack. 1987: I acquired a 3- gallon plastic frosting bucket with lid from a bakery (free). Slid it into my ALICE pack. Made a useful seat at bivouacs. Doubled as water bucket, washing machine, etc. When it wore out. Replaced it with a pickle bucket ( green) . Same size bucket with lid is at Lowe’s for under $10. 😊

I was taught to be very careful not to over extend your tarp foot print past your tent because of rain. Water would get under the tent if you did not roll the tarp to divert the water. It was better have the tarp undersized than oversized. It looks like your tarp will bring water inside your tent when it rains. I would rolled the edge of the tarp to the inside of your poles to prevent this.
@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival14 күн бұрын
@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival 22 seconds ago I agree. The ends are sticking out only because I do not have the ends of the tent staked out. If I do that the only thing exposed would be a small triangle of tarp that I can easily fold under
