New Complication Restoration: The Flyback Chronograph Seiko Monaco 7016

I always wanted to have a flyback chronograph and I found this vintage Seiko Monaco 7016 at auction that needed some love. I love the vintage Seiko's chronograph from this era because they have great and revolutionary calibers. In this video I will attempt to restore this vintage Seiko 7016.

Japan a place of plain, practical, perfection. I shows in every aspect of life with Japanies watches, or cars, or Sushi. The inside that you never get to see may not be perfect, but functional. Everything else has to be functional.and honed to perfection. Very different from German for example, where things have to be as complicated as possible and should you ever get to look, it has to shine, just in case. Joyeux Noël

The serial number on the case back will tell you the year of the watch. If serial number starts with a 3 it would have been made in 1973. If the three is followed by a 6 it will be June 1973. If 3 is followed by a 0 it will be October 1973. The remaining numbers are the production number. Great video as usual 👍

@@FrenchWatchCollector I recently sold a new old stock Seiko Speedtimer chronograph from 1971. A great watch with its original packaging and papers. I also have another Speedtimer which people nicknamed the Pogue. They are great watches.

I can’t se the serial number on the case back. If you want to know exact year an month of manufacture you need the first 2 digits of the serial. Send a picture or copy the full number and I will telll you. Keep on with your excellent work! Regards Cristian

The first number of the serial numbers is the year made and the second is the month. Great to watch you work on one of my favourite make of watches. Cheers French.

Vraiment top cette Chronographe ! La montre est d'apparence très simple mais pourtant, elle propose plusieurs complications, j'aime beaucoup ! La manière d'ouvrir la montre est aussi très sympa ! Encore bravo pour ce que tu fais !

A part from the finishing which movement do you prefer to work on? Which one is easier to service or better thought?

This is a good question. Obviously the simplest is the watch the movement is easier to service. The omega 300 and 500 series are quite nice and simple. Longines has some great calibers too

I am curious about the jump from 36:01 to 36:03. Did you have to take of the bridge to move automatic winding arms to the right position?

If I remember well, it could pass over the pivot point to be at the right position

This watch leaks water, no matter what service I took it to, it couldn't stop it. Do you have a solution to prevent it from being waterproof?

You need to replaced all the seals but it is a chronograph so not made to go in water this type of watch

Très chouette travail, je suis toujours ébahi que tu puisses t'y retrouver aussi "aisément" parmi les différentes vis... Cela parait si simple en te regardant faire, mais je me doute de la difficulté face à un mouvement un peu plus original, voire inconnu. Heureusement, la "doc" constructeur comme tu le soulignes, ça aide énormément. Petite question par curiosité : comment juges-tu du couple de serrage à appliquer aux vis lors du remontage car je ne t'ai jamais vu utiliser de tournevis dynamométrique ? En attendant, je te souhaite un joyeux Noël. A+ [Edit] Aux lecteurs anglophones, désolé pour le français, mais mon anglais n'est pas top...

Cher Monsieur! Puis-je te dire que je vous aime ? C’est vrai‼️ . One little thing that you lost in translation is that the proper name for the watch (unless it’s printed as you wrote it from the owner’s manual) is NOT a “flight-back” chronograph. It is called a “FLY-BACK,” because the chronograph hand FLIES BACK to zero.
