I get asked a lot of questions in regard to hydroponics and how I do things. So I thought I'd get some help in doing a Q & A session going over the most frequently asked questions. Susan (imstillworkin) is my co-host in what turned out to be a very fun video. She asks the most common questions, and a couple that were not so common.
Topics covered were:
1.Where do you get the square buckets from? And can you use round ones?
2.What is the part number for the grommet that goes in the bottom of the bucket? 3MPL8
www.grainger.com/Grainger/Rubb...
3.Where do you buy the perlite? What alternatives can be used?
4.Gardens benefit when good bacteria is added to soil through compost. Do you add anything like that with hydroponics? If so, what do you use? If not, how's everything working without it?
5.Where do you buy your hydroponic supplies like Rockwool and net pots?
6.What size rockwool cubes and net pots do you use?
7.Can you use the Dutch buckets outside?
8.How is it possible to grow plants in a hydroponic setup without using an air pump?
9.What variety of lettuce do you grow? Where do you buy the seed? Can you use any type of lettuce seed?
10.Which hydroponic setup would you recommend for a beginner? And do you take requests for one-on-one teaching sessions?

I agree youtube is much better than anything on tv. As for the two of us making the jump from video to cable, that would be something else. I think we do compliment each other really well. And you never know what the future holds. In this world, anything is possible. Thanks

Love the southern charm teaching style and the duo. Definitely subscribing! Can you do a video about seeds, like how to keep them, long they last, or how to grow from them? If you are into growing from seeds, that would be wonderful

Yes, you can re-use the water. If you want to do it properly, get a PPM tester and bring the value up the original point by adding more water and fertilizer. I generally discard the water around some other plants and start fresh.

There are so many amazing things about the Internet but the thing I enjoy the most is being able to meet and connect with people you otherwise would never have met in your whole life. It's obvious that this is the case with you and Susan! I so enjoy watching the 2 of you and bonus I learn new things every time. We had to stay on the edge of the bushes. The swamp was just a few feet away. Down in that area, the land is flat and holds water everywhere. It was really nice to get away though, if only for a few hours. I feel pretty lucky too. Thanks.

If the lettuce is growing aggressively, it can use up a lot of water. I have a small pump that I use if needed to empty the reservoir. Or you can scoop it out with a cup. Disposal is around some other plants. No need to waste it.

Thank you. Yes, I have considered aquaponics. But doing it in the GH is quite a challenge with the range of temperatures from summer to winter. If I could get some space indoors, I wouldn't mind doing a small setup. We'll see what we can come up with.

You could do the lettuce with a rubbermaid tote. A lot of people are doing that indoors. For fresh lettuce in the winter, it's a good way to go.

Yes Jerry, I start most of my hydroponic things in rockwool. The only exception so far has been cucumbers. I use a mix of perlite, vermiculite, and peat for them. You can put the hydroponic setups at whatever height is convenient for you. They are all very adaptable.

+GalaxyDrifter From my experience, how you grow the tomatoes is not as important as the variety when it comes to taste. The dutch bkt Big Beef tomatoes are excellent. The store bought varieties are not grown for taste. Most are very thick skinned, tasteless, and simply poor excuses for tomatoes. Pick a variety that you like and stick it in a dutch setup. You'll be just fine.

Hey Darrel, I add nutrients to the 55 gal drum, rather than simply having plain water. That way I don't have to worry about any "weakening" issues. And every 30 days, I change out everything to keep from having a high build up of salt.

I think perlite does a better job of draining or shedding the water. You could mix in some peat to help it hold the water better if needed.

For me, it's hard to do no-till. The clay is tough to work with. And there are times when I really need to turn the soil to bury any fungal spores that could carry over to the next season. I think no-till is better suited for large fields of corn and beans. I've heard of planting the cover crops early, between the rows. It should work well.

Yesterday the family and I drove 90 miles up to Disney so I stopped off at Grainger and picked up the grommets. You can't beat the price. A pack of 50 for around $8.00 with tax. Unfortunately the shipping is more than the grommets. Thanks Bobby.

I used pea gravel this year and each bucket was very heavy. 40-50 pounds which means they will not blow over when outside. That is a plus until you have to move them. I am now buying perlite at a good price so it will be perlite from now on with about 4" of gravel in the bottom which filters out the perlite. I have tried this in 6 buckets this year and it worked perfect.

It's interesting that so many youtubers saw this connection before we did. It wasn't until we started making videos together that we realized just how much we had in common. We were 100 miles apart, but living parallel lives. We're mirror images of each either in so many ways. It's simply amazing. To me, it's a once in a lifetime connection. Obviously, I'm very thankful for youtube. And I thank God for allowing our paths to cross, she's an incredible lady.
