In this video, I show you how to use the simple but effective technique of Cold Water Lime Pasteurization to grow mushrooms on straw. The process is pretty simple, basically just soak straw in a water bath of hydrated lime for 12-24 hours, drain, inoculate, colonize and fruit!

For draining our limed straw we took a plastic garbage can and drilled holes in the bottom. We then forked it in there when done to drain and placed a heavy weight on it overnight. it was fine the next morning to load into the growing containers. You can use the garbage can for regular use by just using a bag in it.

If it's just a matter of driving the pH up then ashes should work just as well. If you have access to free fresh wood chips or shavings from a mill you can burn a batch for the ash needed to sterilize the rest. Magnesium shouldn't be an issue there since it would otherwise be present in the wood as well, though I guess it could concentrate it some. Seems like it's worth an experiment. I was considering burning shavings to heat water to sterilize the batch, but if I can skip heating the water then that's all the better.

If you catch the water draining from the straw you can re-use it. This will reduce how much lime you need to add to the next batch. (Or you can just submerge the straw for a month and let the anaerobic bacteria do the job - though that requires 31 barrels and lots of water to start with, you can recycle most of it.)

Hi Tony. Is it also possible to use cold water lime pasteurization on sawdust substrate or it's best to placed them in pp bags & sterilized them using a steamer? Many thanks from a newbie mushroom grower here in the Philippines.

Sure, this could definitely work, just don't add any extra nutrition (like bran ect)

What do you do with 50 gallons of alkaline water? How many straw batches can you sterilize with one 'drum' of water? The waste stream produced hasn't been addressed in this one. If you have any other uses for the 'spent' water really like to hear it.
