Hi Aaron, when I had an Audible subscription I listened to From the Oast House. I found it hilarious and would agree that Alan Partridge is a genius comedic creation from Steve Coogan. I am in Canada and was raised on Python, Dave Allen, The Goodies, etc so it’s my kind of humour. Also thought he was great in Mind Horn too. Sounds like a great reading week!

Interesting! There's so many references to daytime tv personalities and things that I'm sure don't make it to other countries, but I imagine there is enough humour there to make sense to anybody.

The Mitford sister who had me reading her story (in the Mary Lovell book) with my jaw on the floor was Unity. She's the one who went to Germany to try and become friends with Hitler. Which she managed to do, and I think that's how Diana became embroiled in it all too and eventually married Oswald Mosley. And what staggered me was that a lot of the family were pretty much pro-Hitler until WW2 broke out. Fascinating stuff. After you mentioned last week that Dr. Thorne is one of your favourite of Trollope's Barsetshire novels, I read it and have to agree. I liked the first two very much indeed but Dr. Thorne was 'excellent'. I'll read Framley Parsonage in a few months.

Yes Jessica describes her parents going over to meet Hitler. I am keen to know more about them as this ends with the death of her husband in 1941 and she'd been away from the family for years by then, so I'm curious how the others felt about Hitler later on. Dr Thorne I think is probably the most straightforward romance of the series, I've really enjoyed them all in different ways.

Hons and Rebels is the book that sparked my Mitford obsession - such a fascinating family and such a great read

It's great isn't it! I want to read their letters and Diana & Deborah's books too.

I definitely recommend their collected letters for the insight into all their different relationships and perspectives. I've had Debo's Wait for Me on my tbr for ages - this might be the nudge I need to finally pick it up!

I thought those might be more well-known than Alan Partridge. I love those too, he's still playing a character there but a kind of extreme version of himself. Partridge is much more stupid.

You have me intrigued with these Mitford sisters 😊. I also heard Evening Reader talk about Collected Works. I’m curious to know what you think when you’re done. Hopefully it will pick up a bit!

You're making me regret giving away my Mitford sisters book!!! I have no idea to start with them??? Haha we like Alan Partridge in this house - how can we not, living in Norwich!! Best comedies to come out of Britain.... From my era I'd say Fawlty Towers, Royle Family, Gavin and Stacey would be top 😊 The office!! Sam says only fools and horses and agrees with you on Alan 😂

I love all those too. Blackadder, Peep Show, and Red Dwarf are up there too. The Pursuit of Love is a good place to start as it's fiction and a small thing. Apparently there is going to be a TV show about them soon.

@@AaronReadABook we've only started peep show really recently, and I like it. Never watched red dwarf! Thanks and I was thinking they sound made for a TV series. I know the one who married Moseley featured in peaky blinders.

Never read any Mitford books but I do have their massive book of letters I think will be fascinating to read. I often don’t read books people have raved about because I’m never sure they can live up to expectations, I kind of need some time to forget all that before I pick that up. I knew nothing about Collected Works before Shawn suggested we buddy read it probably helped, plus I have a soft spot for Scandinavia. I really liked Martin as a character because you see him as this pretentious, selfish young man and as a father and a middle aged man, he’s kind of an open book. I loved the writing and the slowness of it and think the marketing possibly plays up the ‘mystery’ aspect a little too much. I absolutely loved it but totally understand why others wouldn’t. Either way will be looking forward to your thoughts.

I do wonder if it is partially the way I read books compared to you and Shawn, in that I read one book at a time and often in big chunks so the teenage years feel a bit relentless to me, it's just been me and Martin all week. Martin is definitely less annoying as an adult but I'm still not sure I like him. I'm at the point now where they are starting the publishing business and I like this more now but I don't think it's going to be a favourite of mine. I actually like the writing itself though.

Hm. I ordered a copy of *Collected Works* based on Shawn's gushing review; I've also seen Evening Reader's review but it actually gave me pause because the one Donna Tartt I've read (The Goldfinch) I didn't get along with. And now comparisons to *A Little Life* , which I have absolutely no desire to read at all ever! Ruh-roh. For some reason my Amazon order was delayed and hasn't shipped yet; I'm starting to wonder if I should cancel it while I can! I only got through *The Goldfinch* because it was audio. And the thing I was most annoyed by in that book was the drug/booze fueled middle with Ivan. Didn't like the end much either. Really only liked the first third or so... I don't mind long books, but only if I enjoy spending time in them.
@AaronReadABook
@AaronReadABook 5 ай бұрын
I wouldn't like to say one way or the other at the moment, it's actually nice to read even if I think it's been overly long. Tartt features lots of art and students, which I think is the main comparison. I really loved reading A Little Life but it was utterly miserable, the characters were brilliantly done, and it's the friendship in it that makes me think of this, this isn't miserable at all so far.

I don't know if it's only me, but the sound in your videos are usually low. This is VERY low. I have to turn the sound up to the extreme where there's an additional swishing sound...😕

In the last two videos, I've had real problems with sound especially. I bought a microphone that did get rid of the quiet sound, but then it cut our mid-video a while ago so I've been scared to use it since. I am experimenting with different things to fix it, I think something is interfering in some weird way., I will probably go back to the microphone.
