Thanks for watching! It's impossible for us to know what Hvaldimir exactly feels and thinks, and although some might see this as a beautiful interaction between humans and animals, in hindsight I personally see him as a sad example of our actions. Although Hvaldimir has learned to find fish and survive on his own (which is a miracle), it's likely that he'll never have the "social skills" to join a beluga pod, even if he ever found one (there are no pods here on the coast of Norway). But maybe he's happy with interacting with humans every now and then... who knows! Sorry it was a short video this time! If you're new here and liked it then have a look at my other (whale) videos as well 🙂

Thank you for an update on Hvaldimir! He is beautiful, and I loved that he was taught to fish and take care of himself. I saw the video of the fishermen removing the harness he had on, and have wondered how he is doing. I grew up in Oslo, now live in Oregon, USA, and love the beauty of Northern Norway during winter. I subscribed, and look forward to more videos. Stay safe, and thank you for posting! PS I listened to you speaking Finnish in another video of yours - it is a beautiful language to listen to even though I don’t understand it. :-) I enjoy listening to languages even when I don’t understand them; they all sound so different, which I find fascinating.

I’m glad to see that you understand how encouraging behavior from whales like this is a great risk to them. I wish, for the sake of this individual whale and marine mammals in general, that you take this video down. Tens of thousands of people have watched this, and many of them will want to have this “experience” themselves. If you really care about this animal and his species, maybe you should do a video about the danger this puts his kind into. Touching marine mammals, feeding them, petting them, attempting to change their behavior at all is wildlife harassment. In US waters, this is not only discouraged but illegal. If you care about their well-being, _leave them alone._ Observe from a distance. Do not approach them. Do not encourage them to approach you.

@thudthud5423
@thudthud5423 4 жыл бұрын
Hvaldimir is a social animal. He needs interaction with his "pod" or family. If all he knows are humans as his pod, then he shouldn't be ignored. Should he be treated like a petting zoo animal? Of course not, but he shouldn't be treated like he isn't there either. Since we don't know what he wants, let him do the approaching. There is a bittersweet story of Luna - an orca that adopted people in a Canadian harbor town. He apparently lost his pod and had no one to interact with except people. He constantly begged for attention The Canadian government, believing it was acting in Luna's best interest, made it a law to ignore the orca. Luna eventually died when he got too close to a boat's propellers one night after have been ignored by the people in the harbor. There's some good KZfaq videos of Luna and his story.

Here in Ireland a bottle-nose dolphin that lived in a bay in Dingle, County Kerry has disappeared in the last week. He first appeared 37 years ago and in all that time was never not observed in the harbour mouth or bay for more than a few hours, but now at an estimated age of 45, it seems old age may have caught up with him and he has died and been carried out to sea. These animals are a gift to be treated with great respect and care and to teach our kids about.

Hello...I just wanted to say, I just watched your reactions and responses to the Beluga whale, and share what I know about those beautiful whales...When I was up in Churchill Manitoba, I went on a boat ride over to an island and the Beluga whales when we stopped would surround our boat, and they were so curious. They would look right into my eyes and just float there and watch you....If you reached down they seem to be communicating with you....I have never been so taken with such a mammal. They give birth to live babies and feed them milk....They are marvellous. What a thrill I had to just be near them. An experience of Love between humans an animals I will never forget....Thank you for sharing you video....Truly grateful. Carolyn D Hogarth

Well, I would recommend doing some research on the zoos that are around your area. Not all of them are just taking animals from their natural habitats, there are zoos and aquariums helping out in research and coaevarion efforts to protect animals species, and a lot of times animals found in creditable facilities are eirher born in captivity or have been rescued from bad situations, and if they end up not being able to survive in the wild, then they're kept on the facility where they have a chance to live. Of course no animal should be in captivity, but there is a difference between caring for the animal and using them for your own gain that only interests humans.

Despite the word "whale" in their species name in English, belugas are classified in the dolphin side of cetaceans. Hence the human friendly behavior of your new friend. Also, this one behaves like a tamed animal. We cannot be sure of his history, but we know that some armies train cetaceans for underwater missions, like sticking a magnetic mine to enemy vessel hulls (hence the harness? ) I hope he can now fish his own food, although belugas usually hunt in groups. This one looks lonely. Unlike common dolphin family clans, beluga pods are not stable, any individual can temporarily join any pod. What about your beluga? Maybe he has been educated to prefer human given food? A way to prevent him from swimming away...
@AlluringArctic
@AlluringArctic 4 жыл бұрын
The harness originally had a GoPro mount. But who knows what he was originally trained for. Unfortunately there are no beluga pods on the coast here. Only every now and then a single young beluga "gets lost" and finds its way to Norway. Mostly they stick to Svalbard etc..

God, now I'm worried about the orcas getting him. Poor guy. He's obviously had human interaction his whole life, it'd be cruel just to cut off contact out of nowhere. He must be so confused. I hope he's doing okay, and has a long happy life.

Wild animals belong in their own environment !! We need to stop being selfish and stop putting them in a zoo or aquariums!! Let's take care of nature now before is too late

Claudia Palacios. - l agree with Nogs Galogs. There is a zoo locally that is free. It is mostly funded by donors. It is old and beautiful. It improves the areas for the animals. It has a pair of snow leopards and their baby. Snow leopards are hunted. I believe that some day a zoo may be the only place to see a species that is extinct in the wild due to climate change and being hunted. Not all zoos are bad. Many love their animals and give them wonderful care. Especially if the zoo is free. They are not profiting from attendance.

Claudia Palacios l think you might want to concentrate on hunters and poachers. ... or do you approve of that? Many zoos do provide habitats for animals like they live in, in the wild minus hunters and poachers.

@Jennifer Love You might want to do some research about animals in the wild. Then research animals in the zoos that provide habitat. You'd rather look at an animal in "pictures". Really?? Climate change is here and it is not improving habitats. Do you also prefer animals hunted and killed as long as they're in the wild? Do you approve of trophy hunters?

@Jennifer Love l have a life that includes having property that is a certified wildlife habitat. I was expressing my opinion and asking an honest question. Sounds like you need to "get a life."

What a beautiful story, thank you. I enjoyed this video so much, felt myself smiling throughout it, the only time my heart sank was when you said he didn’t know how to get his own food but I soon started smiling again when you said local fishermen were feeding him. He is an incredibly beautiful animal, can’t help but smile when he seems to be smiling the whole time. I just subscribed to your channel.
