In an age of seemingly increasing social isolation and loneliness, communities are being formed and friendships forged in video games. But can you design for friendship? Do virtual connections have a meaningful impact on humans? What is the cost of loneliness?
In this new online course, the University of Iceland - in collaboration with CCP Games - will guide you through the most interesting insights to emerge from the world of video games. Available now on ‪@EDXmusic‬

The course analyses the complex impact of video games in the world today. This course explores the multifaceted impact of video games, based on CCP's research into connections and friendships formed between players of the MMO game Eve Online, and the University of Iceland's long-lasting studies on the health and well-being of young people. The course deals with both and is open to all interested all over the world and participants can take it that their own pace.

If a game like EVE Online is more meaningful than real life to someone, they REALLY need to get out more. Sitting in an air-conditioned room staring at pixels on a screen, regardless of what happens in said game, will never beat meeting up with your friends at a bar, hiking up a mountain and watching the sun rise or set while you breathe that fresh air, or anything like that. As someone who put a few thousand hours into EVE and has played video games my entire life, that’s something I learned as I got older. Video games are great, but saying that they can be or should be more meaningful than what happens in real life will lead you down a path of nothing but sadness and loneliness in the end.

Lets just overlook how EVE has quietly launched a built-in gambling system. Would be nice if video games were part of a solution for loneliness, but that's just copium.

Yeah, maybe EVE had the chance to become something like they try and make it now in its 1st couple of years (started to play in 2006 - switching subscriptions between EVE and WoW every couple of months back then) - but the allowance of toxic behavior as part of the "Game Mechanic" destroyed it just as much as it destroyed the fun of building and fighting together for a greater goal (the Background Lore - as given a glimpse of in the Books - also contributed to a "Vision of something Greater and more meaningful" through the struggle with human behavior/"Nature"/erring, but it was abandoned almost and is only very remotely perceivable these days in the Game as it is, i.m.h.o.). Also the great abstraction of not being able to really identify with one's character regularly - all that cool Character Creator for a mere portrait photo, where "No Man's Sky" allows seemless travel to/from/around Planet Surfaces, Space-Stations etc. but has only quite limited character creation/modification implemented at this point (yet, they're expanding content regularly still, it seems), really disappointed and took out my "excitement" about the serene Space-Travels/-Exploration and creation of items to contribute to building the Universe of EVE...

Years ago it was a great way to build strong friendships. Because being independent was so hard and dangerous it would make a lot of sense to work together. I've made and kept about 5 very good IRL friends that started as copilots from Eve. I wouldn't be as optimistic about the same outcome today, as you mention. There is too much driving solo 24/7 grind content in eve now to inspire working with familiar and trusted individuals.

@@evnnns that's just how you play though, in the past you used to be actively looking for people to talk to and run fleets with. But now you dont, I've made many irl friends from eve over the years and through one of those friends found my current girlfriend of 2 years, so I'd say yeah, you can makes friends.

@@BarbellmusicGYM are you aware what happened to a game called Naval Action with a small playerbase of 2000 when they did nothing but try to ruin peoples fun by grief killing them at spawnpoint nonstop? well the playerbase is now 100 and the game has been announced to shut down soon by the way, lots of players in that game i talked to was also EVE Players, both the victims and griefers side had eve players

New subscriber, long time fan of EVE Online and new player. I played Home World for years and I always wanted to play EVE from the first time I saw the he original trailers. Having had a chance to play it now for a month, there’s one thing I would like to see regarding grouping weapons. We need a, “fire control module”, that would allow you to group weapons in any configuration you feel you need for the type of fights you find yourself in. A fire control system like the ones that actually exist today on destroyers, submarines and aircraft carriers. Thank you and keep making a fantastic game.👍

I've been in A pod too long, Need to stretch legs and Trigger finger, My number one cause of depression is waiting for Dust 514 the way I imagine it, Get me back on the planets CCP In fact get me on the team making the shooter, I'm worried it's going to be childish and gimmicky My only qualifications are that I played Dust 514 too much and am still playing EVE too much, o7

@@Groza_Dallocort it's all about what you pay and what you get. How much you need to pay for a dose (quantity) of entertainment. It's only entertainment and you should see it only as entertainment. No, there are games that offer fun without you have the feeling of a paying slave that needs to grind and pay at the same time. This game has 4000+ euros spaceships that you can loose 30 seconds after you finished fiting the ship and undock. Are you kidding me?

@@oldquaker those 4000 euros spaceships you talk about have been built via in game mining and reprocessing of modules, It's not like you can just pay 4000 euro and have a full officer fit Titan delivered to your hangar. EVE dosent work that way. I mean in most mobile games pay 100 euro to get this legendary sword and another 100 euro for this legendary bow and pay another 50 euro to get your character to level 100 and those items just shows up in your inventory. The day you can buy ore that spawn from nothing in EVE that is the day EVE really dies

2.6billion people play video games and 23k are currently playing eve early this day it was around 16k and a few yers back it could be 50-80 up 100k people. That should let you something. Also EVE is not the game I think we we talk friend ships in online game. What I think after 14 years on and off playing is that in eve every one hates every one and backstabbing is your number one friend. Also if you love drama then play eve. Because a bunch of men in their 30+ always manage to out drama every soap opera on the planet 100 times over.

I cannot like EVE when it drains my wallet just to enjoy getting ACTUALLY functioning ships. Your monthly prices and grind is ridiculous. Also, BRING BACK DUST514. It's the only damn thing that got me INTO EVE. Now that it's gone I have no inspiration to play.

Lol. May i have your problems? BTW Eve never was about Friendship. Eve was and Eve is about Scam, Harassment and Hatred. Three whales of beautiful Eve Online. And CCP disinterest as a cherry on top. This MMO is absolutely unique with it's incredibly toxic community.

Hmm. That's interesting. Maybe I shouldn't be so hard on my daughter friending people in Roblox. If she finds friends in that space then who am I to judge? I still have friends from my EVE Online days. For the small time I played it I can still remember the fun and laughter we had in team chat and on fleet deployment. "Don't jump ... did someone say jump? No no! Jumping! Oh FFS!! ... Oh sh!t ... Burning for the gate ... Podded. Who the f$@&* jumped?" Sounds terrible but it was a lot of fun. Just make EVE a better Star Citizen. If you stuck next 10 years in your capsule you will not be sucsesfull. Walking on Stations was the right way. Ingemevoice is one of the right way. btw my pc is more off then in last years, maybe i am happy with my real life.

I wanted to like of EVE Online, but... just having a ship as my avatar gets boring and tiresome really quick. Give me missions _outside_ of my damn ship! Make me manage my own crew like in cancelled PC game The Mandate. Maybe then I decide to return to this damn game.

@@RMMinc Kid, The Mandate looked like a really promising game -- I still prefer to play a game like it than _waste my time_ playing a damn game where my avatar is a damn starship! The only game with this kind I ever have patience to play was Rebel Galaxy -- and that only because of the ship-to-ship battles. And even so, my interest by that game faded quickly. And no, I have no patience to waste playing a game featuring "space battles involving thousands of players". A game -- *_ANY_* game, be it Single or Multiplayer -- needs to have more than that to have my attention.
