I remember when i first read Frieren and tought that all Elves had white hair, then i saw the colored illustrations and found out Kraft and Serie had green and yellow hair lol. I really like this whole arc exam for introducing all these nice characters. Also yeah, it can be confusing sometimes to know how to pronounce names, because they try to use the german pronunciantions instead of the japanese ones, Sein, Sense and Serie for example pronounce the S as a Z, Zein, Zenze, Zerie.

You have to remember that those 11 mages Frieren lost to all had *less* mana than her, so we don't know how many people she lost to in total (though I would imagine 99% of the time she wouldn't even bother to try if the other mage was clearly superior). These 11 were mages that, theoretically, _should_ be an easy win for Frieren, but they were not because mana is not the end all be all of mage fights, and teaching Fern that was the reason why Frieren even mentioned these losses. It's reinforced later when Fern singles Ehre out as the strongest out of the six of them because she has more mana, but Ehre says Wirbel is tactical and has more experience, meaning he would win against her and therefore against Übel as well (and he did! Übel lost the fight and didn't feel confident in her victory even with Fern's backup). With that in mind, I'm pretty sure Flamme is not included in this list since she had more mana than Frieren at the time and Frieren probably didn't surpass her while Flamme was alive. And if Serie is older than Frieren and everything Richter is saying she is, it's highly unlikely she's the elf Frieren lost to.

Sorry ahead of time for a negative nancy comment : Unfortunately this is where my enjoymenet and excitement for Frieren took a sharp nosedive. I am yet to finish it, but i will do so alongside your reactions. Idk, this exam felt like an episode of Tower of God, with a ton of teams, some even dying or fighting (or pretending/faking to) to death, explanations of magic systems during battles, eh. This is not why i started watching this show. I genuinely prefered slow meditative episodes, just exploring at talking about life. (kind of ironic that I was mad at people who bounced off To Your Eternity when it introduced its jarring "tournament" arc, and here i am several years later doing reversing the roles)

Honestly if it makes you feel better, this section right here of the first phase of the exam is probably the lowest point of it, but you will probably go back to enjoying the episodes from 21 and onwards, this arc is here mainly to introduce characters, and it might not have eased the spectator into the tournament as smoothly as it could've had. But Frieren doesn't really change genres or anything like that if you're worried, most of it is the episodic nature from previous episodes with longer arcs here and there that do get better and better.

@@ergohash2517 Most of the characters introduced in this arc will become much more important later in a future arc that season 2 will cover. This exam was just a good way to introduce a bunch of them and also to lay the groundwork for future developments. And while the series will go back for a while to the "small stories" with traveling and different encounters, it definitely becomes more story focused. There will be more multiple episode stories and one big one that is about as long as the mage exam. Also future arcs will have a lot more fighting and action because the farther north they travel the more dangerous the lands become and there are multiple bigger developments going on in the background. So while i dont think the series ever again reaches the "mediative" pace of those first 15 or so episodes ( demon arc not withstanding) its still takes time for those moments and stays Frieren.
