I applaud TopNotch for going out of his way to seek out a "mentor" of sorts, and then trying to promote this mindset to other LCOs. Good job my man! I'm sure you're on your way to your ideal business after this experience.

Yep! He makes perfect sense! This has been my mindset for these past few months. I saw a video from Brian's Lawn Maintenance on route density and how he sold off a part of his route . This made so much sense to me. Target a certain area and a certain type customer/property. Be disaplined and don't stray from your goal. Focus on what your good at . Great vid Brian 😉

I had a house cleaning business. I totally understand the employees who do not do " so good a job" although they know what is expected. I went back to solo and changed my pricing. I had felt I was responsible for ALL house work. I finally decided what I was responsible for in weekly cleaning and what was "extra." Funny how people began having the the dishes done before cleaning day when they found what I charged to wash three days of dirty dishes, pots and pans before I could think of cleaning the kitchen. You provided great advice from personal experience.

A very good video, a lot of great information. He sounds a lot like Truman Steemers a carpet cleaner who does you tube. Courtney talks about 2 things which every business owner should look at. 1. What is your business model and 2. Who is your ideal customer. He says everything that you do should go by these 2 things. The equipment you buy, your marketing you do, should you go owner operator , how you narrow your niche. etc. He says your business model should fit who YOU are, we are all different , not all of us fit the same model. Looking at his videos you can see his model its as clear as day. His model works great for him others need to find a model that works for them. By examining these 2 factors closely you will know exactly what you need in equipment, marketing etc.

I agree, we've all got a niche, and the key to success is discovering it, honing it and capitalizing on it. It's good to diversify, but never in the same business, your focus in a single entity needs to offer a product or service that makes you stand out from the crowd, not blend in. I was mentored by a man who told me that every facet of your business needs simplification (Keep It Simple Stupid). This method makes it easier to train your employees up and ensure they're all cross-trained, which is an asset to your business and they respect you as a business owner, because the workload is distributed evenly. If you are treating your employees as an expenditure, rather than asset, you're in the wrong business.

Josh Woodley I’m about to be 18 I started with 2 push mowers. No weed eater no blower just a broom. Now I’m fully insured and have some real big jobs under my belt. All the to be said is you don’t need real nice fancy equipment just make the best of what you have and quality is key. If you do a good job than it take off from there good luck bud.

I just turned 20. I started doing lawn care when I was 15 to make extra money. I started out with small residential accounts in one neighborhood. I still have those accounts to this day with many other residential accounts in my area. Don’t go out and spend a ton of money on the best equipment possible. If you care about what you do, the quality will be the same. It just takes a little more effort

I learned the hard way with commercial/industrial electrical contracting business. I found out pretty fast that I could have a stronger business and make a lot more money with 5 good guys and 2 trucks than I could with 30 guys and a fleet of trucks. This required turning down work which I didn't want to do but I selected the clients that had a great track record and reputation for constructing a lot of quality buildings and could lead me to more projects. Over the years of contracting I found out that you can hire 10 guys today, in less than one month you are hoping that 8-9 of them will quit. I am in a At-will State and would put everyone on a 90 day trial period, then go from there. Very few made it 90 days, people just don't want to work. You can pay them $20/hr for a helper position and they expect $50/hr when they struggle to show up for work. I got out of contracting and went into engineering where I could work from home office with no employees, my stress level went from Stroke/heart attack levels to enjoying life!

Why didn't you ask him where did he get the $50K for buying his first landscape business? Also he said he is a partner in another business with revenue coming in. So in other words he was rich to begin with and had a ton of cash to start. Also to add. What exactly is he doing now? He did say residential. But doing what? Cutting grass, trimming and weed spray? And he's worth $10 Million? I'm guessing $980K is in other businesses and $20K in his lawn care biz. How much is his house worth? What kind of car does he drive? Comm'on Brian get the low down with questions. Lawn care Millionaire could be $45K millionaire.
