I’m thought the Russians formed battalions of four companies ? Unless that’s what they did in 1805 and three is more like 1812 forward ?

We have also extended the ratings to Very Large units. My mate and I play in strict 1:20 historical ratios and found that certain units (newly arrived British full strength battalions in the Peninsular or Guards for example) just needed that extra size to properly represent. We also realised (after quite some time) that cavalry fight in squadrons and not always whole regiments - provided you keep track of their unit size(s) and transfer their loss of stamina when reforming or splitting.

Superb video, I've recently (last couple of years) moved from ACW and WW2 to starting Napoleonics and this series of videos has proved invaluable. I do game in 18mm though and it would make my day to see more units in that scale (pleased to see some AB in your Waterloo Prussians video). Keep them coming old mate!

Another informative and entertaining video. Good basics and clear explanation of military terms relayed to black powder. I think the quality is constantly good or improving so if you figures are off its not the content or delivery in my view.

I do unit strength across the battalions based on is the battle being fought early way, mid war and late war to change unit strengths and for waterloo reformed army size being there were 10 months to refit both armies

This is absolutely perfect. I haven’t a clue about nappys except they had muskets and funny hats but I’ve been feeling the pull, ordered a pile of rulebooks and some AB French. Probably order some 10mm nappys too. Trying to figure out how to base them to cover most rules such as esr, black powder, laselle, GDA etc. any suggestions would be highly appreciated

We always used 1/50 for 15mm, giving us 12 man battalions, but then we fought massive battles, with many many battalions. For 28mm we use 1/30 or 1/20....

Quick question for you, in your Imperial Guard video you talked about a primary source about how the imperial guard looked "like pirates" covered in tattoos and gold earrings - do you have that source handy? I'd love to take a look at it so I can do my guard better

Just seeing a Brigade or an entire division displayed on a tabletop is inspirational to those of us building armies. It gives us a goal to reach, a target of "I really want a whole French division". Me: I want an entire corps and likely won't feel ready to even start gaming until it's done.

If anyone want to try corps scale just go minimum 2 battalions, 2 brigades, 2 divisions, cavalry brigade 3 regiments, artillery brigade 4 batteries (horse battery, 2 divisional batteries and corp reserve batteey), 2 skirmisher battalions for each division 2/6 per brigade and if you like it expand on them from there increasing or keeping units size at each level based on historical or paper size or your own choice. max size could easily be like 25 battalions, 3 divisions 2 cav brigades and 6 batteries 2 cav, 3 div, 1 reserve. I don't mean buy this many but if you want to try bigger add your mates extra brigades when you play.

Great video, thank you! Just a few remarks: 1.Pronunciation of Brunswick-Oels. The Oe or Ö is pronounced like the u in burn. 2.Individual companies were often used to guard positions like bridges or farms. 3.Companies usually split in two to form columns, called a division or platoon.

Awesome...as always. I struggle a bit with the cavalry unit size. My (French Cent Jours) infantry regiments are made of 2 (one has 3) battalions . Each battalion: 6 companies/bases of 4. 24 a battalion...48 a regiment. So far so good, but I'm confused about the size of the cavalry regiments. The "standard" BP 12 for a regiment seems too skimpy compared to the size of my infantry regiments. My I Corps has 33 infantry battalions...the 4x12 strong cavalry division looks tiny next to my infantry. Help?!

another good vid. the British did use the Corps system. the prince of orange 1st corps, hill 2nd, picton revs, uxbridge was cav. Ho I have 2 inf corps and a Cav corps. in my British army as a matter of interest I have 2 Inf Corps 2 divs in each, with 3 bigs in each with 4 inf Bns each 3 inf 1 lt bn . and the Brunswick Corps. 1 Cav corps , 8 lt cav regs 9 hvy regs, dutch, british, hanover.

Is there a good place to sell mini's? I have an entire french army, mostly unpainted, just primed and mounted for Empire 3rd. Minifigs and another company from the 80s

I'm thinking of getting into Napoleonics but skirmish game types like Sharpe Practice or similar. 1 box of British Vs 1 box of French etc. Perry have the most miniatures for your money but I'm not sure how you load out your troops. I've seen people's lists in battle reports but I don't know what you would use for skirmish games???

Russian infantry was organized by 3 battalions 2 of which would be in the field with the 3rd being a depot battalion held in reserve on on garrison duty.

I am making a bavarian army and as they were quite a bit smaller than the french army for example, would they still have 3 battalions per Regiment or only two?

cavalry actually had companies as well but the squadron was the base unit (two companies = one squadron)

You would have been better to explain this with one video per nation. For instance the British at Waterloo had two Guards Brigades. The 1st. Guards Brigade:- 1st, Battalion 1st. Foot Guards and 2nd. Battalion 1st. Foot Guards. The 2nd. Guards Brigade:- 2nd Battalion 2nd. Foot Guards and 2nd. Battalion 3rd. Foot Guards. Quite a few of the battalions were 2nd. Battalions as after the invasion of France in 1814 a number of Peninsula Veterans were sent to North America to fight the Americans who were trying to invade Canada. This meant that the British contingent occupying France were 2nd Battalion troops who hadn’t seen any fighting. The majority of Brits at Waterloo were 2nd. Battalions. Otherwise your video is great for beginners to Napoleonic battles.

The British certainly did use Corps

As much as I admire your efforts to bring Napoleonic Army Design to new Players... The Russians had a 3 Battalion Regiment Strength -2 Field and one Reserve Battalion. Of this reserve Units the Grenadier/Elite Companies were permanently withdrawn to form Converged Grenadier Divisions. The Field Battalions kept most of the time their Elite Companies within the Battalions to have a strength and Moral Support for their Tasks. Converged Units never had flags. Regimental Artillery...3/4 pdr with Prussians, Austrians, Saxons in the early years. 1810-1812 the 6 Pdr with the French, Westphalien, partly Polish/Duchy of Warszaw, Saxons had their 4pdr Fast firing Guns. So Backwater Countries...delete the Term fast🙂
