Today Ben completes the inlay and installs frets and side dots. The gorgeous redwood top, with an f-hole, is glued onto the semi-hollow body. This guitar is coming together!

👏 to the editors for turning messy, chatty livestream footage into a clean, multi-angled episode that's almost at the standard of the regular non-live "staged" episodes.

Meh, episodes out of order (last week was the inlay on the semi-finished neck, while the body was sitting there in clamps). I'm curious how many other build streams get finished before this one's edited version. At this rate, we might see the bass edited version next year... FWIW, I've been watching these since covid, and have been wanting to watch a bass build. Now I get to see notifications that there's 4 streams of it being built that I might get to see someday.

@@dannysrigid for sure there's a continuity error, but my point was about the editors cleanup effort rather than sacking the Script Supervisor. The bass build is coming as super-edit vids pretty soon cuz they want to start the auction to coincide with the edited vids going out to the larger audience on the main channel. The bass is maybe 1 more stream away from completion (barring major Ben diversions, always likely), so it could be soon. If you haven't seen it yet, the body wood is real pretty. Ben asked viewers on the build stream which episode should come out next - Ukraine vs bass. The poll result was for the Ukraine, so here it is. Blame viewers for the scheduling - their thinking seemed to be finishing off one video series and clearing the decks before starting yet another series in parallel (travel guitar, Jasmine's strat, Ukraine, bass, ggbo soon). You can't please all the people all the time.

@@PaulCooksStuff, and my point is too many channels to service means less service for each channel. Expanding for the sake of new and improved platforms every time a new one comes along never ends up well. In the realm of social media you get pissed off viewers because their routines are messed up, and then there's the viewers that like being on every platform known to man that lord their techinical supremecy" in the comments section. In the end, I think starting the 7-8 hour streams would have been great during the peak of lockdowns, but in no way fits into most people's schedules (people that have to work, people with no broadband and "restricted/throttled" bandwidth). Not to mention well over a month of "teasers" in that KZfaq lists them in my feed, even though I'm subscribed only on this particular channel. I don't want the other channel, I see no need for it other than to pad Ben's ego. But I get reminded of what I'm missing EVERY TIME I open my feed page.

@@ericl6460, Yes, Ben's ego. The dude who speaks of not wanting to flex (speaking about his watch collection) while flexing his watch collection. The dude who spreads himself thin on too many platforms (for more exposure) to keep up with them all, and creating different levels of "pay to play" for his followers.

Your content has helped me through a fully torn biceps tendon, a rough time with Covid( thanks for the shout-out during one of your livestreams btw) and now surgery on my shoulder, all in less than ten months. Having your long videos to look forward to has helped to keep my spirits up. Thank you!

Excellent editing- the sudden appearance of the Tardis made me giggle. This guitar's going to look lovely when finished, and the f-hole is a very elegant shape.

I free-handed a few cavities myself, back in the day. Never looked that smooth afterwards, though.

Thank you Ben for all the stuff you post. I learn something from every video you put out! It has really helped with my guitar building! Its great to see the Studio coming together at Crimson, It has come a long way since my visit in Dec. Its a shame I didn't get tot meet you then, but hopefully I can coordinate a 5 day class when I am back in the UK later this summer.

I have a few builds on the go but......I will get a Crimson Guitars Kit soon. Think red stain. Gold hardware. Babicz Bridge. The difference in longevity and delicacy between forstner bits and router bits is almost certainly because of the moment of torque on the cutting edge, i.e., the torque is about a different axis relative to the rotation of the bit. Sorry, physics nerd.

Hey, just watched EP 1 and 2, and felt some job where missing between those episode, and now in ep 3 you are doing the body, wich was carved and everything in ep 2 xD and you worked with the inlay on the neck in ep 2, wich is not made here in ep 3 xD

I didn't think the fret color did anything for/with the inlay, but I thought they brought out the figure of the fret board excellently.

6:23 Router bits are more delicate because they're effectively end mills, and those are legally required to snap after a few million revolutions. Skilled machinists are capable of bending the law to get more life out of them, but only by so much.

Actually they are not legally required to do anything. I was a tool maker at a fairly good sized precision machine shop and we had end mills that saw years of service with only periodic sharpening.. Proper feed speeds and cutting rpms are a must with any cutting tool. The "delicate" nature has to do with side loading the bit where as drill only cut with the tip when used correctly with little to no side load.

@@jazzpunkt40 so would you suggest using a router for wood as a fast rpm and a slowish feed speed ?

@@mrfatbobrider1969every tool has a proper rpm range. With router bits proper rpm is going to vary depending on cutter diameter and complexity. This will affect feed speed as well. When hand routing always let the tool do the work and don't force it.

I’ve seen you use a cyanoacrylate glue for the frets in a refret you did a few years ago. Wood glue for the initial fretting or did you just change your technique or is cyanoacrylate not used for the initial fretting? Just curious.

I'm guessing wood glue works better in case of a refret, as well.

I just never heard you talk about plek....I'm confused as to why is it not worth it to you but a plainer was the latest and greatest thing back in the day when opening the big shop....

$150k for a plek machine, that a trained luthier can do by hand in a couple of hours. I'd guess you'd need far higher production volumes than Crimson turn out to make it cost effective.

So, what happens to the plastic part of the inlay when strings get constantly fretted and bent onto/over it? Will it not wear it away fairly quickly?

It has metal on either side of each part, so it will become a series of _very slight_ hollows and then stay that way. If you play the guitar regularly you will notice but I doubt it would hinder effective playing. Someone will find out for sure of course.

What about a challange that combines two of your loves. You make a guitar inspired by a watch chose for you and afterwards you chose A watch and a person to challange. Kits are allowed, sell it for a charity.

I have a full set on the wall off to the side, they are a tad fiddly though and not ideal for this particular build, though they certainly would work in a pinch 😀
