Embark on a transformative journey inspired by the Minka Summit! Join us as we share our story of finding inspiration in traditional Japanese architecture and heritage during the summit, leading to the purchase of an akiya in rural Japan.
Step into the past with us as we take you on an immersive journey through the Minka Summit 2024 held in Hanase, near Kyoto. Join us as we explore kominka houses adorned with Kayabuki, traditional thatched roofs that embody centuries of Japanese heritage.
Discover the magic of a two-hundred-year-old Kominka as we unveil its interior treasures. Experience the warmth of an Irori, a traditional Japanese sunken hearth fired with charcoal, used for both heating the home and cooking food. Learn about the fascinating blend of functionality and artistry that defines Japanese architecture.
During our tour, we learned that "Kaya" in Kayabuki signifies grasses, while "buki" denotes roof, highlighting the natural materials and craftsmanship involved. Delve into the craftsmanship that goes into maintaining these roofs, with replacement costs reaching around 10 million Yen (approximately $65,000 USD).
Join us on this captivating exploration of tradition and innovation, where the past meets the present in the serene countryside of Hanase. Subscribe to our channel to witness the beauty and resilience of Japan's architectural heritage.

Welcome to our channel, where we share our journey of restoring a traditional Japanese minka, which we bought as a cheap abandoned house in the picturesque countryside of Japan. Join us as we breathe new life into this former akiya, exploring the beauty of traditional architecture and the challenges of renovating a house in Japan.
As foreigners living in Japan, we've embraced the opportunity to restore this minka, a symbol of Japan's rich cultural heritage. Learn about the craftsmanship involved in minka construction, from bamboo and earth to straw, and discover how these materials create a harmonious living space.
Our journey began with purchasing this akiya for 5 million yen (approximately $35,000 USD), including not just the minka but also a guest house, storage building, and a generous plot of land with trees. We'll share tips and insights into the challenges and rewards of renovating a traditional Japanese house in the countryside, showcasing the unique blend of history and modern living.
Whether you're a fellow renovator, a lover of Japanese culture, or simply curious about life in rural Japan, our channel has something for you. Subscribe to follow our progress, get renovation tips, and immerse yourself in the charm of traditional Japanese architecture. Let's embark on this journey together and rediscover the beauty of a bygone era, right in the heart of Japan's countryside.

Aloha from Hawaii. Enjoying your videos as a frequent visitor to Japan. Will be there again this summer. Thinking of buying a camper van as an alternative to an akiya but haven’t figured out the logistics of where to park it when we’re not there. Please LMK if you might be interested in “timesharing” a camper.

I've had the same thought but apparently only someone with Japanese residency can register and insure a vehicle in Japan.

Aloha! That is an interesting proposition. I already have 4 vehicles under my name which is two over my allowed. I am not a resident yet, I work for the US government. I am allowed two, but managed to get a waiver for an additional two. Hopefully you can figure something out!

Great video and very informative. Love the Japanese countryside and the old farmhouses but I'm well aware of all the work involved. Been in Japan since 2007 and really enjoy your videos because you keep it real and don't sugarcoat the dream of a cheap Akiya, nice job.

Great video mate we live in rural Okayama and decided to rent first and take our time to find the right Akia property. We're very interested in bio-intensive gardening (permaculture/no till). Would be good to network-Cheers

I have one of those handlebar trimmers too but mine came with a harness that straps on and allows your body to hold the weight. It's super helpful! I'll have to show it off on an upcoming video. Looking good man and I'm hoping to make it to next years Summit!

You would think straw roof would be cheaper. At 65k that’s a full year salary. Does it take that long for one person?
@cocolenchojapan
@cocolenchojapan Ай бұрын
From what I understand it is a dying skill, therefore expensive. Now there are many houses with tin roof over the old thatch
