Back in the '70s I worked at an Army supply & maintenance depot in California. The Superintendent of the Supply operations talked and walked as fast as Wade. Extremely knowledgeable about all the different processes in each building as well as for each product line. Each building, we had eight of them, was 1/4 mile long and three stories tall by 500 yards wide, in other words HUGE.

We go to the Home Depot/Lowes/Lumber yard and take it for granted that we can buy anything we want in lumber. We have no idea just what it takes to get it there. This video is a real journey from standing trees to finished lumber. As a kid we used to go up to northern Alberta to visit my fathers family and there was and still is a major lumber mill there. Just about all of dad's relatives an other people in the small town worked for the mill or out in the forest cutting timber. Most of the homes were owned by the company. It was always a treat to go to the mill and watch how all the processes worked. Of course 60 years ago, there was no automation so a lot of the work was preformed by people and lots of them. All lumber went out by rail and the mill was the reason the railroad was built. The mill is still operating today, totally automated and is now owned by a multi national corp. but back then, it was privately owned up until the mid 60's. Great memories from childhood for me. Great video Chris.

Thank you Chris and Wade for the guided tour. I found it very informative. One thing I noticed that might be worth mentioning is the use of explosion proof lighting fixtures throughout the complex. Obviously this operation generates lots of airborne dust, which in the critical concentration levels can be explosive enough to destroy the entire building and cause grave injury. I would imagine sawmill operations must meet the same dust abatement and explosion protection standards as grain elevators and cereal mills. That is a fine upstanding and outstanding family running that business.
