Join Brownells GunTech Keith Ford as he offers an overview of the collectible Type 99 rifle often referred to as the Japanese “Arisaka.” Designed by Colonel Arisaka Nariakira and used by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, this bolt-action rifle featured a wire monopod, an anti-aircraft sighting device and was chambered in 7.7x58mm. The Type 99 was produced in four versions, Short, Long, Paratroop and Sniper. Late war “last ditch” rifles are distinguished by their crude manufacturing and poor finishes. If you have a firearm you’d like to see featured in the From the Vault series, please let us know.

That is a beautiful rifle, and quite rare. It’s an early Kokura with what known as the “flat foot” monopod. Meaning, the feet are actually flat and not rounded like later production pods. Beautiful example, truly a vault gun to be cared for, for sure.

I have one of these that my uncle took off a dead Japanese soldier off Saipan. It has a bullet hole in the stock. Mine still had the monopod, anti aircraft sights and the Imperial Chrysanthemum symbol on it.

The dust cover was ok the type 38 too? And the monopod was used to prop up the gun so they could shoot accurately

I have a pretty good one that is bring back with complete mum. I ordered the reproduction monopod for it, and a dust cover. I need to age them somehow to make the finishes match up better. I have a Type 44 also with the vicious folding bayonet, but it is not in as good of condition. They actually shoulder very nicely. I have to actually fire either one though. Nice rifles.

The rifle you are holding is a type 21 Kokura arsenal type 99. It is much like my type 21 Kokura, except that my gun doesn't have a chrome lined barrel. My gun is in the 84,500 range of which the100,000 series 21 were produced. My gun also has a slightly downturned bolt, but not to the degree that the sniper rifle was equipped. I wish my 99 had the mum, but looking at it there never was one ground off of it and the metal seems to be original and not re-blued? I also have the bayonet which has the same identical markings on the blade to the one you have from the Nagoya factory.

They do make kinda a reproduction. It's by Tanaka works. Downside is, it's airsoft. And for $300. If you save $ 200 more, you can get an original 1, may not have mum or dust cover & monopod. But at least you have the real deal.

This might be a dumb question but, does the Type 99's chrome lining extend all the way back to the chamber? Any help with this will be greatly appreciated😊
@5KpGD
@5KpGD Жыл бұрын
Yes, the earlier Type 99 long and short rifles had a chrome lined barrel bore, chamber, and bolt face. By 1943 the Japanese arsenals had dispensed with the dust cover, monopod, and rear sight extensions (inappropriately called an anti-aircraft sights by the public), the chrome lining feature would be dropped before serious desperate economic measures that would be later encountered with the Substitute Type 99 (also known as a last ditch Type 99). The chrome bolt face was dropped early on sometime in 1941, but the chrome bore and chamber would continue a while longer.

I know you quopte theories but, my ideas were a little different. I think they changed to the 7.7 beause their machine guns werw already useing this caliber hence logistics? The type 30 bayonet were from when there was much calivery used by armies and the longer baryonets reached the horses integral organs better?

Good comment about the mum - this is often misunderstood. Rifles with a defaced mum were in all probability obtained in Japan from a dump of surrendered rifles.

I have a Type 99 my father gave me which he says he "liberated" from a Marine weapons store on Okinawa after war's end. The mum has had a file dragged across it, though it's still visible. I have the "bring back" letter too.

Really think the Japanese should have stuck with the 6.5x50mm round for most of their rifles, and left 7.7 for the crew served weapons.
@TannyWanny
@TannyWanny 6 жыл бұрын
it would've been better to start off with the 7.7 to begin with

Not at all. Larger cartridges: have far more capability than practical, heavier, larger, lower capacity firearms, take more raw materials to produce, humans don't shoot higher recoiling rounds very well, etc. The world's militaries have found that it's best to outfit most troops with a shorter weapon using a smaller cartridge.
@cavscout888
@cavscout888 6 жыл бұрын
With your plan... they'd be ALL shooting a cartridge than can send a bullet further than they can usually see, that takes more of the precious natural resources they didn't have to waste, shooting a large round that would recoil pretty hard on their 150lb bodies, with crappy sights that make hitting a man at 300m uncommon, carrying less heavy ammo on their small bodies, and to resupply the ammo by means of carts. Definitely would be the wrong choice, in hindsight.
@matthewpham9525
@matthewpham9525 5 жыл бұрын
@@cavscout888 The Japanese still liked the extra stopping power of the 7.7 cartridge, even with the increased recoil, weight, bulk and cost. The Type 99 peep sights are definitely an upgrade from the Type 38 notch and post, though the anti-air sights were pointless, even in China.
@cavscout888
@cavscout888 5 жыл бұрын
@@matthewpham9525 It was perceived only. They were wrong. Japan tends to imitate, and that probably drove the change the most. To 'match' their future enemy, the 'West.' Sadly they had it right before, and everyone was shifting the opposite direction at the same time, or after. The US already wiped the map with the Japanese in WW2, now imagine if the M1 Garand was chambered for something like 6.5-xx and say a 10 round capacity... Currently reading Sturmgewher! and German soldiers benefited a bit by less recoil with the Kurz round for the MP43 (summed model I'll use) trials.
