Amanpour and Company

6 ай бұрын

As grief and anger cascade across Israel and Gaza, language can be weaponized to widen the rift, spread propaganda or advance an individual agenda. And it doesn't stop there. From the radical speeches of Donald Trump to the extreme rhetoric of Russia, language plays an often dangerous role in politics. Yale philosophy professor Jason Stanley joins Hari Sreenivasan to discuss his new book, "The Politics of Language."

In times of war and crisis, adherence to core principles is more important than at any other time. Glad to see Professor Stanley speaking out about the dangers that become possible when these levels of dehumanization and fanaticism are invoked. It’s overtly genocidal language at times, as mass atrocities continue to occur against civilians. No civilians of any country are to blame for the actions of their leadership, that’s the exact type of reasoning that allowed for the massacre on October 7th, saying that every civilian is culpable for the occupation. Actually think about that, the Israeli government is using the same type of reasoning as who they call terrorists, that every civilian is guilty at most, or a sad cost and “collateral damage” at least. That’s truly insane. Dangerous AF, and inflicting more brutal damage and violence on these civilians is not going to help make Israeli civilians safer, if anything it’s raising the chances for something even worse to follow, because until there’s a political solution to what has been willfully ignored and thwarted by Israel as a policy choice for far too long now, which is freedom for Palestinians, full equality and rights. Until that happens, nothing will actually improve.

correction: all Israelis 18 years or older...must serve in the army for 3 yrs...then they have to serve in the reserve for 45 to 55 days per year until age of 58. For Palestinian.. there is no such thing ...and those who resist Israeli replacement & dispossession are usually volunteers.

As a Palestinian who has been oppressed since 1948, we suffer a lot from the “politics of speech" which been used for decads by israeli leaders. In Israel, there is a fascist figure who is considered a model for using the “politics of speech.” He is Benjamin Netanyahu. He used many "speech politics" terms, most recently the prophecy of Isaiah and the giant "amalik". What does the guest comment on this?

That discussion of “super predator” from the 1990s was excellent. It’s a glaring example of how right-wing language about black men impacted policy, largely supported by even liberal politicians. However, a big difference is that the left and liberal politicians can admit mistakes, and many did on this one and came around to criminal justice reform, because they supported over-incarceration. Right-wingers who created this language continue to pretend nothing was wrong with it, and no adverse effects were created by it. In others words, they believe in pure fantasyland where their rhetoric and actions have no consequences.

The US invasion of Iraq was declared illegal on Sept 15, 2004 by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. Bush was tried in absentia by the International Commission of Jurists in Geneva. “The invasion of Iraq was neither in self defense against armed attack, nor sanctioned by the UN Security Council authorizing the use of force by member states and thus constituted the Crime of War of Aggression.

If any collateral damage is terrorism, then all war is terrorism. Some people think intention matters, and Israel claims it is not intentionally targeting civilians. Hamas intentionally targets civilians, so there is no doubt about the matter. I'm guessing you don't care about intention, or if you do, you think Israel is lying about theirs.

Marxism is more widespread than suggested. Marx is one of the great theorists of modernity, alongside Darwin, Freud and Einstein. Their ideas are foundational and ubiquitous even within ostensibly unrelated fields. Few would define their identity around a single intellectual figure, but the influence and importance of pivotal ideas should not be minimized, or denigrated. There is no reason we should accept ‘marxists’ as a legitimate political target, but neither should we trivialize their relevance or contributions. It’s just economics with labour and class emphasis, which can be useful to consider from time to time, Donald Trump notwithstanding.
