FromSoft is one of those rare developers whose games are worth knowing about even if you never play them. Just watching a video about Echo Night or Eternal Ring or Shadow Tower can be as interesting as playing one of them, and your videos are very well made.

Don't usually comment on videos, but I want you to succeed. You create very well laid out videos about games that, as a self-proclaimed gamer, I have never heard about. I love being able to experience these games that I would have never known about, through your videos. Hope this does well to push the algorithim in your favour!

One of the interesting things that I feel like a lot of people overlook is this series would go on and become Déraciné, another Fromsoft's underrated gem came out in 2018 (which is their actual last first person game btw, as opposed to what you said). There are a lot of similarities between the two like how you go collecting things, experiencing people's memories, solving their problem, and multiple endings based on how you finish their story. It goes to shows that Fromsoft despite having lots of original IPs, never really strayed from their past but rather evolving from their old games. For example Kingsfield would go on and becomes Souls games, Tenchu becomes Sekiro and of course Echo Nights become Déraciné. I would be excited if they attempt another survival horror like Kuon after seeing how scary Bloodborne can be. Would be so cool if Miyazaki is inspired by Keiichiro Toyama at some point in the future

I really appreciate that you not only review each game, but you also give a complete synopsis of the story. Sure, I’d like to play some of these games and see the story for myself, but that’s not always possible. After watching your video on the PS2 Kunon game, I looked it up and found out that used copies are going for hundreds of dollars! 😨

@dungeonchill
@dungeonchill Жыл бұрын
Hey no worries. To each their own. I was exaggerating in the video, but I do find it kind of annoying when people get so negative about games that have tank controls when it really couldn’t be helped. They’re old games, and devs hadn’t figured out good 3D controls yet. Heck, some consoles didn’t have controllers with joysticks when they were released (PS1, SAT, etc). And yeah, having full freedom of movement in a 3D game is wayyy better. But if an old game has tank controls, I’m not gonna knock it.
@atothed84
@atothed84 Жыл бұрын
@@dungeonchill No, I understand you were exaggerating. It's just kind of weird how some 3D games had tank controls and some had free movement. Even from the same era. But I guess they were figuring it out.
@dungeonchill
@dungeonchill Жыл бұрын
@@atothed84 That's what I think it was. There just wasn't a standard yet. There was actually an old game that had a modern 3D control scheme, and an IGN or Gamespot review of the time said the controls were awful. I can't remember what game it was, but it's really funny to see something like that nowadays. Shows how much of a wild west 3D game design was at first.
@atothed84
@atothed84 Жыл бұрын
@@dungeonchill And nowadays they all look the same, following the same template. That's why these older games are keeping me interested in gaming. I'm from the time where there was still some variety and originality, even if it was only 8-bits. Still, some modern Indy games are pretty cool. 3D has come a long way.

i mean, by today's standards, old games do have a lot of objectively bad design decisions in them, and nostalgia is a hell of a drug (and one that admittedly doesn't effect me), but complaining about it is like complaining about Shakespeare talking funny, or about old movies having bad pacing. the art form was much younger and standards for accessibility were much lower, but we got to today's quality of life features and addictive progression and engagement psychology directly because of the risks that old games took in trying new things. like, i find tank controls to be terrible for combat and immersion because it adds an extra barrier of artificiality between the gamer and the character, but i'm glad games with tank controls exist, even today, because that era of games made today's games possible. art evolves through the work of artists and without those steps and missteps, we would have the smooth control language that we do today. people like to complain (i suspect because of the personalized curation of today's media), but games are better than they've ever been, and that doesn't just happen. it's a process of figuring what what works, what doesn't, and why. it's fascinating.

I feel "speechless" after that, even though I'm going to say a few things. I'm not in my own best state of mind and have worries distracting me while watching this, early in the morning while waking up, but damn that was one of the hardest stories to follow and wrap my mind around I've encountered in quite some time, I went back so many times to watch the story sections again, trying to understand what the hell was happening.... so it was pretty hilarious when I finally got to the end and you said something like "the story doesn't really make sense, don't think too hard about it, it's more a skeleton to hold up the adventure game elements and vibes the game is going for". I suppose so, jesus christ lol. It really does give the feeling of there being something amazing to piece together, a truly deep, tight story told in an extremely unconventional way, with all the seemingly random time travel and everything else.... like it's Pale Fire or something. It reminds me of both Eternal Darkness and Shadow Hearts 1&2, which do both have stories that ultimately make sense, as weird and strangely told as they are... and shares thematic elements with both also, while being made and released prior to either. Of course, all of them are simply drawing on the same much older source material for inspiration, and coincidentally ending up with story elements and storytelling styles and methods that are all reminiscent of one another, and overlap in various ways... but this really does feel like something very beautiful and masterful that is kinda missing the detail and depth to reach its full potential. I'm quite fascinated by it, and wonder if there was anything lost in the translation, or that had to be cut due to time constraints, that the creators did have but simply were ultimately unable to fully convey... or whether it truly is, as you say, just a lot of neat elements put together, but not worth overthinking because there's nothing concrete ultimately there. Was that their intention? I'm having a hard time coming to a conclusion, and would love to play this myself... but I can see how it really could be intentionally using all these tropes to construct something fascinating to think about, but never meant to have clearly defined answers to all the questions it raises, and that being meant to be up to the player to come to their own conclusions about. Fascinating, beautiful, and frustratingly incomplete, simultaneously. Oh well, I guess that's why I love something like Shadow Hearts 1&2 so much (Eternal Darkness is great, but it's a little TOO concrete and lacking in some of the aesthetic sensibilities that the Japanese games of this style are so wonderful at), because it has all these kinds of themes and elements, but actually pulls it off in the end having everything actually make sense, as much as it possibly can anyway. I wish I had played these early FromSoft games back in the day, I would have really loved them.
