This is the weirdest game on the Saturn. Absurd story, ridiculous voice acting, awkward animation -- it's such a treasure.

So about the 'no wind' thing. In Japan the wind is often associated with spirits and the divine, and curtains, chimes and pinwheels are often hung to catch the wind and usher in good luck. Considering this game was made by a Japanese studio I think this detail is meant to imply that the city is godless or forsaken by the spirits and/or heaven.

Butterflies symbolize human souls in Japanese culture, so I think that gives us a clue about some of the story. Same with the fact that the hour right when the sun sets but it's not entirely dark yet (called oumagatoki in Japanese) is when the spirits cross over to our world.

Ah, that might explain a few things- I am reminded of a bunch of ghost games and so that I've played where twilight is when you can talk to spirits, and Kingdom Hearts with the eternal twilight town of all games. Now the REAL question is whether mysterious bald people named Anthony is also a reference to some obscure Japanese myth, or if that's just in the writer's own head.

"It's like the writer didn't know where all of this was going when he wrote it" I think a lot of people would be surprised by how often that happens. It's just part of the process is fixing those crooked pathways once everything does end up coming together. Sometimes they get left in though and no one realizes, and I imagine it can happen a lot easier with games where so much of it is a group effort.

I love Lunacy. There's kind of an evolutionary dead-end with games like it, the Hidden Souls games, D, Enemy Zero, etc., and their more retrictive nature gives them more focus than the modern "walking simulator" games that go for similar atmosphere. I play it every few years after I've forgotten enough of its puzzles. Good to see it get attention!

The first game I ever played on my PS1 was Pandemonium, a 2.5D platformer from 1996, and one of the only other games on the system to use Password saving, like Crash 1. It's a relatively short and simple game with 17 levels and 3 boss fight levels, but it makes really good use of 3D camera perspectives throughout the game. It has a magical & whimsical medieval high-fantasy visual aesthetic juxtaposed by some rather silly and cartoony enemy types. And also Nikki reminds me of that girl from The Fifth Element lol

Your perspective and voice are pretty great for talking about games like this on youtube, you give a really relaxing vibe... good channel name : ) The "obscure games" that I'm a big fan of are things like Vagrant Story and Shadow Hearts that have gotten some good coverage recently... you could probably do a good video on Killer 7... I don't know, Azure Dreams lol? Front Mission 3? Siren (the original PS2 one) is a great game that isn't talked about enough, though again, it has gotten coverage here and there recently... you're a better expert on obscure games than I am probably... Rygar, the NES one... though the PS2 one was pretty great and obscure too. Definitely like you making longer videos like this.

When I was a kid I played a game called "Spud!" it's on Steam these days so I eventually finished it, but it's a weird one, you play as Santa's nephew (the titular Spud) and you go to visit him but he's been abducted by his nemesis. So you then gather up the reindeer and try to go rescue him. Doesn't sound all that odd, but the reindeer are anthropomorphised, one is in the shower and you gotta get them out, and all of the game overs are animated (there's a compilation of them all on here somewhere). It wasn't really a kid's game but I played it when I was about 6. It came out in 96 or so and was a point and click with some adventure game logic, and on the box it talked about having "look-around-o'vision" which was actually kinda similar to some first person dungeon crawlers (although it's just an adventure). It can't be that obscure if it's on Steam but nonetheless whenever I mention it to anyone I'm met with confused looks xD

Came across this recently but I actually saw a Let's Play of this- it was definitely the kind of game that takes you ages to go through simply due ot all the clicks you have to do just to get around the town... but the atmosphere, especially to someone who grew up with this style of gameplay, is truly spectacular, jank voiceacting and everything. Might have been nice to at least beifly introudce and give your opinions on the towns people and their various little side quests, as it was pretty hilarious to have their deaths play up as a funny montage when you don't even know anything about them... then again, maybe that was the point.

Thank you, amazing video for this weird game. Everything was great, nice tone, nice rhythm, everything is well balanced. Was very entertaining from start to finish.

Ambrosia Software was my jam, my dad having fallen for the "Think Different" meme (and who could blame him, the advertising was excellent). But Performa-era Mac (OS ~7 or so) was a small community, where we lived. Even so, Escape Velocity was peak space sim. The feeling of getting your first Kestrel, the deep love for the sturdy Argosy class, whose hides has protected you from the cold of the abyss for more light years than you could remember. Salute, boys. Sunless Skies (FailBetter Studios) is the only thing that comes close (also excellent in its own right).

26:03 please review a pretty obscure PS1 sci-fi horror game called Overblood. It fits perfectly with the type of games youve been reviewing. Also it has the most hilarious death scream I've ever heard in a game. Btw I just discovered your channel and I'm loving it, great stuff. You definitely earned my sub.

Hey there, new sub here. I really love weird games, so this is my kind of content, thank you for the video. Never heard of this game but also never had a saturn either.. I saw you already covered echo night, are you up to cover the second game? It has a fans translation. Also maybe galerians or overblood could be interesting to cover but I don't know if they're that weird

I gave Lunacy a whirl after watching this video a few weeks ago. I didn't make it far though. It's a bittersweet feeling being able to so easily demystify Saturn games I only ever read about during my teens in the 90s since I chose PSX. I can't say I enjoyed what I played but the vibes were pleasant AF, like flipping through an issue of GameFan while sci-fi channel plays in the background.

That’s really the point of a lot of the games I cover. I know not all of them are great to play, but they’re so fascinating in other aspects. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the video!

@@dungeonchill Honestly, what made me stop playing was just how damn hypnotizing the music and visuals were together. Like digital ambien, lol. And thanks for the great content, looking forward to see what you cover in the future.

I suspect the weird dialogue is just bad bad localization. The localization team probably didn't have a writer who could take translations and rewrite it into natural dialogue. I'd bet things sounded more realistic in the original Japanese.

I played this back in the day, but couldn't fully understand the plot since my English was basic back then. Still, it was a fun game to play during the weekend. Played it again years ago once I found my old saturn. Understanding how back then, having good localisation and good voice acting wasn't common, I got past the weirdness of it. It was still fun to play, especially trying to save the entire town part.

The only adventure game I've played was Museum Madness. Don't know if anyone remembers that. Lunacy looks interesting. I prefer the oddball nature of older games rather than modern day "realism."

Yeah, older games just had more room to breathe and experiment. When your budget gets into the millions of dollars, more often than not creativity starts to starve.

@@dungeonchill if you want an extreme example of that, check out "Skullmonkeys" for the PS1. It's a claymation platformer with one of the best and weirdest soundtracks I've ever heard. It's technically a sequel to the (also claymation) point-and-click adventure game "The Neverhood", but it can be played on its own. I think it'd be up your alley.

The PlayStation was my first real console as a kid. I had a NES and SNES but they were a bit before my time and I never got into them much. As a result I have such a fondness and nostalgia for this age of early FMV and awkward localizations. They don't make them like this anymore. In many ways they just can't; localization has become way too professional. Just discovered your channel today. Thanks, I'll be marathoning your stuff.

Remember seeing the Torico trailer on a Sega Saturn Magazine demo disc. And always thought it looked bad, it was a joke amongst my friends. Now, however, it seems a lot more interesting. My friend group was into arcade ports and fighting games, so Torico couldn't be further from what we'd play
