To initialize the window on the Ford Focus, you need to close it 95.4% and play 'The Hollies' - "Look Through Any Window" as you lower it to the resting position. Ford had to delete that part of the service bulletin because of ©️ Copyright infringement. 🙄

Try a Skoda Octavia MK2, no bolts holding the metal panel just pop rivets. So you have the worry that if things are not assembled OK, you have to drill all of them off again. So I replaced them with rivet nuts and domed hex bolts. Thanks VW Group.

When I worked at the local RV dealership, we were sent to the Fleetwood service training program to learn about customer service. One of the things was to leave the unit cleaner than when it came in. One of our mechanics learned that lesson the hard way. A customer came in with a seven page list of warranty items to fix and repair. A lot of them were easy quick things like cabinet door adjustments but there were some substantial items too. It was all well and good until the customer went to get in the drivers seat and noticed a grease stain. All the hard work on the repairs, even though everything was completely fixed, all that customer good will went right out the window. The customer yelled and screamed at our service advisor and service manager and then went up to the office to complain to the owner. Cleaning the seat wasn't an option. Not only was all the good work forgotten, it cost us a brand new drivers seat for his motorhome and they aren't cheap all because the mechanic didn't take the time and bother to lay down a clean piece of plastic or other material to keep the drivers seat clean. It's nice to see a shop that cares enough to detail the work area on a vehicle after repairs. It's one of the reasons that I'm a long time subscriber to your channel!

I've done a few of these on my own cars and I dread it. All those connectors, multiple screws and bolts, and finally the rivets make this a difficult job. Eric makes it look easy, but this is hours worth of work for a normal human being with tools you don't necessarily have. I've never seen a plastic panel like this with everything bolted, riveted, and plugged into it. Normally there is a sheet of plastic with goop on it hiding the works inside the door. Before starting this job, you have to sit back, relax for a minute, and get your gumption up. Take your time and it can be done.

Two summers ago, I took my teenage daughter on a business trip to upstate New York which morphed into a visit to the NY side of Niagara Falls--4 hours north--and thereafter detour at South Main Auto in Avoca NY. We said hello to Mrs. O, bought some nice merch (cotton SMA T-Shirts for $10 a piece), pet their cat before heading out to Watkins Glen on our way home. For me, Eric O is entertaining, educational and an example of someone who takes pride in their work. Makes me feel better for the hassle I had replacing a window regulator on a 2001 Civic. New regulator fit on the door frame perfectly, but the glass would *not* align in the mounting holes - off by maybe 1/4". Could *not* figure out the issue UNTIL I noticed the regulator I had was for the driver side on a Civic *coupe* versus a *sedan* even though the part numbers checked out. Had to go to two other part stores to find the *sedan* regulator and, voila, problem solved. Thirty minutes to replace, four hours to track down the right part. Thanks as always, Eric.

I hate window regulators! It's gratifying to see someone else struggle with it 🙂 And you didn't forget to plug the connector in the door latch before reassembly! Good job, Eric! The only way I know to reset and relearn the window regulators, is to disconnect the battery, and then you loose presets, etc. Nice to see you clean your fingerprints off the murder weapon 🙂 PS: It's a murder weapon because, after you're done with it, you're this close to murder someone 🙂

I literally hate window regulator or door lock rod replacements. I absolutely despise door panel removal and reinstall. Old GM is the worst. You pop the panel off and you break 80% of the clips. Buy new clips, install panel, realize you forgot to install something, pop panel off again, break clips again. Rinse and repeat. Love your videos. I learn so much from you! Keep up the good work!

As you know, the fibrous isolation discs are installed to prevent galvanic corrosion between the single-use tension-tightened fasteners and the anterior structural support panel of the vehicle entry portal. Failure to replace them has initialized corrosion damage to the structural integrity of the vehicle that requires its condemnation and demolition immediately. As for the matter of the Maroon Dongle Lock Reinforcement Apparatus, I recall they were an offshoot of the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus... Thank you for your submission, sincerely, PRNY.

Neat Channel you have!! I started working for Dad at a 11 in waterline ditches and we NEVER got along, so I went looking for a job at 141/2 and in 1974, I got a summer job at a Chevy dealership, cleaning at 1st, then they started sticking me in the shop. Squeak , rattle, and water leak duty and dash work, taking whole dashes out!!,prepping new cars!! 16 I got my drivers license , talk about envy and chicks taking notice, and other guys my age seeing me test driving BRAND NEW Vets that had a fuel bladder issue, and only way to tell, was take it out with the owner and gently romp on it, one day though a owner says Kid , ROMP on this thing, OK, yeah buddy, think the guy got off on that !! LOL. Door panel stuff sure has changed since the 70, s I got in concrete trucks in the 80,s, reminded me of a deal with a teacher at the St Louis Mo G M training center I went to. I drove a long ways and always got there early due to traffic, the teacher was pulling his wifes 78 Electra in the class room, and was putting a window motor in that was under warranty yet,, He couldnt for his life figure out how to get the door handle straps off, there was a little tab over the screws, I knew this, working on Chevys that had it, told him that, and I popped it out, he started handing me tools, and I put the motor in , in less time than the book said it was supposed to take, and buttoned up, then asks me what the hell I was here for, LOL ,I just learned things from you ,and was a mechanic for 35 yrs. Seems I ALWAYS got the REALLY WEIRD stuff at the dealer, drove the St Louis zone rep nuts, and if I called him 1st words out of his mouth was, well what kind of weird stuff do I have today. Hopefully not 25 Novas from the factory with the wrong water pump pulley again, that everyone in St Louis couldnt figure out, why they would burn the alternator belt off LOL Nice work, seen a lot of mechanics and you do nice work!!.

The door panel is a good design. It is much easier to replace the regulator on a bench rather than on the door. As far as the silly read clip. Yes throw it away. It will tell the next mechanic that the window was previously worked on. Rather than rivets, I like to use bolts with nylon locking nuts. It is nice to see a mechanic cleaning up after the job is done. It shows pride in thier work. Another great video.

When I worked in a fabrication shop we did pop rivets all day long, and occasionally had to drill them out when a mistake was made. You don't need a large drill bit to get those out. Use a bit that is no bigger than the hole it goes through, you'll save a few seconds every time. You got me laughing again today, when you asked if we were OK when the camera tipped over.

For DIYer level quality, the Harbor Freight Central Pneumatic rivet tool is pretty good. Every team in FIRST Robotics that uses pop rivets that I've ever talked to uses it and has no problems. If you're going to only do up to a thousand or so rivets a year it's going to do fine. Their Mcgraw branded one looks like it could be pretty much the same tool as the Astro one, for $20 less.

There are certain vehicle repair jobs that can quickly spiral out of control. But once they are totally done, no leaks, no weird noises, everything works as intended, it gives a satisfying feeling of accomplishment and you feel like you conquered and won. You feel the glory of victory. You'll be on top of the world. Except for window regulators. There's always something and you won't feel anything after completion, because the frustration lingers on for the rest of the day.

Between the big washers and the red clip... major points off at the next car show. How callous of you to leave them off. ;-) Thank you as always for your great videos and your attention to detail and the customer!

@@booradley1510 Honestly, not too many I'd think. When I saw it at the end of a very involved window regulator replacement, I was like wow, you don't see that every day. Folks in Eric's locale fortunate to have him as an option for repairs. I know who I'd go to.

Say what you will that is one of the best inner door skins I have seen not a clear plastic sheet. With a regulator you can take over to a bench rather than working on the floor. 👍nice

Glad you finally saw the rivet you missed, it was driving me bananas hoping you see it! Great job as always. Man that regulator was a pita to change. Looks like someone took the door cover off and said nope to changing it themselves.

Oh man, I just did that job on my fusion. Kicked my butt a little. Wish I saw this first! I am left with that problem where 14.267% of the time the auto up gets to one inch and retracts. Thank you for learning me up on the auto learn. I thought I needed to replace the window run for binding.

GENERAL PROCEDURES > WINDOW MOTOR INITIALIZATION > DE-INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE -Turn the ignition key ON. -Operate the window control switch in one-touch up mode and remove power from the window motor while the window is moving by one of the following methods: -Disconnect the vehicle battery cable while the window is moving . -Disconnect the window motor connector while the window is moving . -Remove the LH or RH front window motor fuse while the window is moving . -This will de-initialize the window motor and reset the window motor to its original factory settings. -Reconnect the battery cable, window motor connector or window motor fuse before proceeding to the initialization procedure. GENERAL PROCEDURES > WINDOW MOTOR INITIALIZATION > INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE WARNING: Keep objects and body parts clear of the glass panel when carrying out the initialization procedure. During the initialization procedure, the glass panel closes with high force and cannot detect objects in its path. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury. NOTE: The front window must be in the full OPEN position for this procedure to operate correctly. NOTE: If the initialization procedure is only partially completed, the front window motor will remain de-initialized and will not operate in one-touch up mode. 5. Turn the ignition key ON. 6. Press and hold the window control switch until the window glass stalls for 2 seconds into the glass top run and release the switch. 7. Pull and hold the window control switch until the window glass stalls for 2 seconds at the bottom of its travel and release the switch. 8. Test for correct window operation by carrying out the one-touch up feature. If the window does not operate correctly, carefully repeat this procedure.

Thanks for the video, Mr. O! You really nailed the engineer accent! Design flaws really shouldn't happen in this day and age with our computing capabilities - putting that connector on the other side? Who thought that would be a good idea??? As always, I've learned again - don't buy a Ford or a Dodge and if you do, have someone else work on it! :)

Engineer here in the CAD software world who used to be a consultant a long time ago doing implementations at companies including automotive Tier suppliers. I'll tell you how these design flaws happen. That door and its components were probably created by about 5 different companies/suppliers. That is, the regulator was designed/manufactured one by one supplier. The regulator motor was designed/manufactured by a different supplier. The electronic switches came from a different supplier. The harnesses and connectors came from a different supplier. That disregards the door skin, door hinges, and the aluminum sheet that all this stuff is attached to which could very well have come from other suppliers. Each supplier works independent of the other and is protective of their intellectual property which is the CAD model (with the CAD model alone there is enough manufacturing information to manufacture the part). Moreover, the automotive industry uses at least 3 different types of CAD software - Creo, NX, and CATIA, at minimum. Different suppliers use different CAD systems, and no CAD software can read another CAD software's models natively. Thus, when they share their CAD models with the automotive manufacturer, they may provide IGES or STEP files (neutral file format files) which then need to be imported. The files at this point are "dummy" models in that they can't really be modified easily because they are no longer native to any CAD system. Throw in a database that houses all this CAD data at the automotive manufacturer (called a PLM, or Product Lifecycle Management system) where you then have to deal with revision/version control and it becomes VERY complicated. As things get more specialized, at a certain point the automotive manufacturer is nothing more than an assembly house. I used to work for an engine company as a design engineer. It was an interesting education. The pistons were from Kolbenschmidt, the intercoolers were from Modine, the turbochargers from ABB, the governor from Woodward, the oil pumps from another company, etc.. The engine company was nothing more than an assembly house, and my job as a design engineer was often to "design" the plumbing from one system to another. My crowning achievement was that I designed the slip fit for the compressor discharge to intercooler inlet. Yup, I got a gold star for that one.
