Front lawn continues to shine, How to use a plant growth regulator (PGR) Primo Maxx

I wanted to apply some Primo Maxx today but the weather turned on me between the intro and getting to the spray part, I did still manage to give a fairly detailed talk on PGR and how to use a GDD calculator. Sorry if this video seemed rushed I nearly didnt have time to post a video at all this week, Below you can find the link to an easy to use GDD calculator tool so you too can best manage your PGR application.
Some estimated GDD: thresholds
Couch grass 250
Kikuyu and buffalo 300
Cool season turf types 200
Remember these are estimations only and may need to be reduced slightly if you get a turf rebound before the threshold is reached.
Remember to start the calculator from the day of application and once you hit your GDD target reapply and start the calculator from the new spray day and so on and so on.

Awesome timing! My Astro PGR just arrived the other day and ready to put in down. Great tips with the GDD calculator, that makes total sense now that you have explained it. Thanks. Oh, by the way, you might want to have a shower, those flies are hanging around you big time.. LOL

Ive got a tif dwarf green in Melbourne which is in its third season since sprigging. I get the best results from combining washed concrete sand with compost in a cement mixer then separating first with a garden sieve, then a second time with a kitchen sieve. Top dressing with this produces strong growth and a very smooth surface. I use a 1500mm level to screed it off.

Great video! Loved the updates and really informative on the GDD. Small question, I have cool season grass in Canberra. Based on the GDD I would be applying every 2 weeks. Does that sound right?

Hi mate thanks for your support. The GDD days are general guide and may need to be fine tuned. If your in doubt a way to gauge it is to apply some PGR and use the GGD tool to count up until you get that surge of growth check what that is for you then wind the GDD back a bit to suit. You may get to 230 for example. Hope this helps

Have you ever applied PGR on buffalo? I have seed heads at the moment, most likely from the extreme changes in weather. I’m assuming I should wait until they are gone before applying.

Up until now my watering has only been by feel rather than an actual schedule however I will soon swap to my rule of thumb 1" a week over 2 waters and fine tune again from there as needed. I mow about every 3-4days atm

Hey mate, what do you reckon of plant doctor's soil wetter? Do you reckon you could pull together a list of recommended products for just general home garden? Stuff like wetter, macro, general purpose liquid fert sort of thing. I love your channel. It's super informative and you talk at the right speed without all these unnecessary cuts and stuff. I learn so much more! Keep up the good work, I love watching!

Sorry mate mate I forgot to reply thats really slack of me. I have used it a few times now and Im not sure its the product for me. If you want to keep everything natural and the like then its an ok option but I find it don't have the strength like some of the synthetic types have, That being said I like the Seaweed secrets, Activ8 mate and Quantum H. The Granular greens grade champion fertiliser is good too.

@@theaussielawn ha awesome. Have these track marks in the lawn where it's basically turned into compact sandy crap. Aerating and nature's soil wetter applications haven't been able to fix it. Fingers crossed the hydrolink and seasol are able to get some vitality into the soil.

Yeah mate you can use it on the buffalo. Wow 1” a day you must have pumped a heap of fertiliser into it 😆

@@theaussielawn It is so hot here at the moment did as you said and cut it right back about 4 weeks ago it is insane how fast it is growing at the moment. I didn't want the PGR to make it thinker up any more as that was the trouble I hand before like you demo lawn

Hi Brenton. Great video The Sapphire Buffalo looks great. Question. With this crazy weather l getting a bit of clover. Its taking off in the neighbourhood. What products would you use on your Sapphire to rectify this? (Yates Bindi die?)

Im presuming you mean creeping oxalis ? or are you talking the bigger clover? either way use something like Yates Buffalo Pro but you will need to treat at least 2 times 2 weeks apart, oxalis is very stubborn and will take some persistence

@@theaussielawn Oxalis is much harder to spray out than it is to pick out. In fact it is one of the wimpiest weeds there is. If you find the central tap root, you can pull out a large patch of it. The tap root comes out clean if the soil is slightly moist (watered 3 days ago). You might have to redo if any of the oxalis seeds germinate.

@@dchall8 that maybe the case in the US however here it’s not mate. As well as seeds this species also has bulbs that detach in the soil. I must say you have a keen interest in this stuff which is awesome have you considered creating your own KZfaq channel, it would be a great way to share your learnings i for one would have a look see at it 🤙

Another great vid! Thank you. Can I apply PGR on qld blue which I put down 6 weeks ago. My sir grange is around month old a d thinking of applying PGR to both. Also do you now the threshold for Sir Grange Zoysia by any chance ? How can I find out?

G'day Michael I wouldn't be worrying too much about PGR during your establishment phase personally. Re: the threshold I would work on the couch level however the other option is apply some PGR (once the lawn has established) then keep an eye on the GGD days and once you get the rebound I talked about see how far past 250gdd it was. if that makes sense then just fine tune it to suit.

@@Michael_Zink I don't have a lot of personal zoysia experience but it is very slow to establish as im sure you have found out. If you really want to use some per on it then go a super light dose e.g 2-3ml per 100

Hi from Queensland, how do I get my Sir Walter back to looking mint after a few months of neglect due to family grief, I haven’t been able to get motivated to get back into it but now I am, what would you recommend me using something from stores like Bunnings, I’m a new Subscriber here and hoping you can help me out, it’s looking pretty sad at the moment, we had it completely renovated in 2018 to Sir Walter, it’s mainly the footpath areas as we live on a corner block. Thank You Kindly, I’ll go back and have a look at your previous videos, Love my lawn and getting out there just as much as you men do Lol 😂, for me it’s great therapy and some exercise thrown in as well. Hi Nellie and thanks for the message, sorry about your family grief. Lets just start with the basics and build from there. Begin a regular watering schedule with your lawn and aim for a total of 1" per week over 2 waterings, that will wake the lawn up if its struggling then follow that with some lawn food if you prefer to shop at a hardware store just roll with some Scotts Lawn builder (id recommend the all purpose over the buffalo specific bag) If you have broad leaf weed issues look for a product called buffalo pro it will help with any pesky broadleaf. I feel this will most certainly turn your buffalo lawn around finally don't be afraid to keep the mower up on one of the higher settings, buffalo does much better with some length under its belt. Do other brands last longer? Would a heavier dose extend the treatment grow days ?

Hi mate, there maybe minor variations between brands but all will be within the ballpark. (Based on the brands all using the same active ingredients) As for heavier rates I would suggest sticking to label rates as it’s more based on heights of cut and types of actual lawn that dictates the rate to apply

Hey mate! Will you be using bow and arrow on that buffalo to get rid of the broadleaf or is it to late in the season to apply that. I put some down beginning of spring and it got rid of most of my weed problem I now have some spots that have come back. Cheers

Could this be used on Zoysia for growth suppression? I see the label says it can be used for the control of Bahia grass suppression and seed head control in Zoysia, so it should be safe. But will it work for turf growth management? Front lawn is looking mint mate! 👌

Hey Brenton I’m wondering the same thing if ok with the zoysia I’m in mackay and my zoysia is growing pretty quick with the heat and humidity up here. Also , thoughts of using on buffalo? As also ,once our rainy season starts about a month away, the buffalo grows crazy quick. Hoping to regulate growth through the rainy season. Great content once again. Life’s Good👍

Yeah mate I can see no reason why you cannot apply it as a growth regulator on zoysia safely..

Personally I would let your lawn establish itself first . Think of PGR as a maintenance product not an establishment one especially on a home lawn 🤙

1000sqft is about 90sqm so close enough to 100sqm it depends on your grass species and HOC

I taught u said it was difficult to plant to kill bermuda(hybrid/common) and plant something else in it's place like hybrid bermuda...but from the previous video you said u dared something to try it. Meanwhile I dont see any of the old grass coming up.

That reno out the front has come up amazing, congrats. I have been waiting for you to cover PGR's, I got some a couple of weeks ago and the label rate for Wintergreen Couch was 6mls - 12mls /100sqm, I went at the 6mls thinking this was the half rate but still had a considerable amount of yellowing off so any one reading this might want to go at 3mls on Couch for their first application. I put another application down yesterday at the same rate and the grass so far is looking ok and responding well. My question(s) for you Brenton (1) What happens if we are in for a week or more of wet weather can it be applied early, may be at 120 - 150GDD? (2) If for some reason, may be wet weather I am unable to get the next application down and the rebound stage occurs does the next application need to go back to the initial rate of half rate or will the plant be accustomed to the chemical for a period of time? (3) The label rate for my Wintergreen is 6mls - 12mls /100sqm, it then has a rate of 40ml for edging, footpath curbsides, fence lines and around trees what will be the difference between the lowest and higher rates? Appreciate your effort in getting out a vid when your under such tight time schedule and for answering my many many questions week after week, it is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Mate, There are lots of variations for the rates if your cutting at what are considered greens heights then go off those rates lets say under 8mm ok ill go in order 1) I would apply early rather than late. 2) once the turf is accustomed to the PGR yellowing should not occur . 3)Im not too sure tbh on the 3rd question but the one thing that is clear those areas using higher rates all sound like they are going to be longer HOC's and less maintained areas so I'm going to suggest that the higher rates for those areas are due to lower care areas I reckon they would nearly include bunker grass faces in that too. If that makes sense
