Frost Seeding the Hay Field

Today we are going to be Frost Seeding our Hay Field. We will be spreading orchard grass to fill in bare spots in the hay field. I will be using a 4 wheeling and a pull behind spreader. I also have some alfalfa & grass mixture that I will be frost seeding as well.

We live in southeastern Illinois on a 41 acres homestead. We just finished building our log cabin overlooking our pond. We are trying to grow our own food and raise livestock. Follow us on our journey living the rural life and developing our property and becoming more self sufficient.

I got my seeding done on Feb. 29. Our extension office suggested rye, orchard grass, red clover, and endophite free fescue. The fescue was very expensive and they could only sell it in sealed bags. The rye was because it would germinate and grow quickly so I could put the horses on it fairly quickly, and it would be dying of around may. About that time I will be sowing Teff. I am praying that my guineas didn't eat all the seed I sowed! Oh, and I don't have a 4 wheeler either, I used a hand cranked spreader and walked my pastures. That's why it took me all of Feb. to get it done. 😉

Evan, do you have a walk behind leaf blower? If so, strap it in the front bucket of your tractor and get rid of those leaves around the outside 75ft, then re-seed in the spring. That would help with the seed to soil contact, even if you drill the seed, it would help with getting the sun to hit the ground. I would also pummel the outside 100ft with some 20/10/10 fertilizer and pelletized lime, since those trees are robbing the soil of everything. Great video !!

Great intro to your video Evan, really looks good around there. Hope you were able to improve the hay field some. Looking forward to the hay season journey. Maybe a side by side would do you more good around your homestead instead of the high powered 4 wheeler , it will be a little slower but a lot more useful with less damage to your terrain. More hauling capacity than a 4 wheeler too. Just thinking out loud again ? Thanks for sharing with us!!👍👍 Fred

Great video, You may be able to increase your germination rate if you go over those seeded areas with a Multi-Action Drag Chain Harrow. The Chain harrow is ideal for farmers that are spreading manure to help control parasites, for preparing seedbeds, covering seedbeds to enhance germination, harrowing in fertilizer on hay fields to assure a faster, more vigorous re-growth, incorporating herbicides, root raking, pasture renovation, land leveling, and landscaping.

Great modification on the bottom of the spreader. I brought mine back 2 yrs ago, horrible. Looks like that platform is perfect!

You guys have got the place really looking nice from the looks of the drone footage. Hope the frost seeding works out for you guys. I've got the same problem that you have, you discover that when using lawn & garden equipment you have to run slower than you really want to. You're right, once you start trying to cut, rake, & bale the hay, you will have breakdowns & say foul words that'll have to be bleeped out. LOL Believe me, I've been there done that & I'll be doing it again this year too. LOL Stay safe.

From the Kentucky side lower Ohio River valley, I love your place in So. Illinois, wish I had one just like it. - You can do a whole lot worse than use Clover, not only is it nitrogen fixing but almost all herbivores love eating it, it will really attract the local wild fauna.

I don't own or never used a 4 wheeler like that. I have an older (2004) John Deere Gator that is a workhorse around our place as well as a Polaris Ranger 570 that is also an essential UTV for me. My wife loves the Gator and does so much with it.

Gee, why would you possibly have some "bleeps" in the future? 🤣😂 My suggestion would be to save up for an older UTV (side by side) I say older, as they were made more for "work" versus the newer ones made for going fast and "play". I bought one due to my disability, and it has been indispensable.

I opted for a side-by-side instead of a quad and I love it. I think you will find it even more useful than a quad. having a bed to work from is the best. it pulls everything a quad will but is much more comfortable. I used to drive the tractor around if cleaning up fallen trees or cleaning up the farm but now, I pretty much use the side by side for everything. so much easier to jump in and out of and I use the bed as a workbench. perfect height. also, I used to drive my pickup to the barn. now, even in the winter, I find It is easier to throw on an extra jacket and I use the side by side. It is my go to transportation on the farm year round.

Ditto on everything you said, plus a side by side has cover (good for shade & shields from rain...somewhat..also if you have a windshield...even better (my windshield flips down and is removable).

Nice flat field, you shouldn t need too much hay for your goats. Old equipment is more fun to run. It will be a good learning experience.

I have had this drone for a few month. But I was trying out the active tracking. Where it would automatically follow me around. Seemed to work pretty good.

Well I guess you didn’t have the time to trim the hedge rows. Find the time to trim the brush and any large trees. Cut the limbs high up so you can drive your tractor under them. This will stop the hedges from encroaching on the field, making it smaller.

Beautiful video Evan... Treelines rob nutrients, moisture and shade the ground a distance of about 3 times their height out from the line. It's mostly the moisture they hog away from neighboring plants that causes a bare or less robust perimeter. Thinning the line helps a bit, but I figure you want the habitat for your deer population.

@@augustreil I make a comment before reading the rest so that happens often to me. Another issue I didn't mention is that many tree species root systems emit toxins that prevent plant competition in the area of their canopy.

The deer will find plenty of cover you want hay for livestock thin the trees to about one every 12 feet or so and brush hog the smaller stuff. As the other people said fence rows suck up a lot of moisture and nutrients. You need to find out if your county extension office or a near by collage will help you with your soil and planting issues, talking to neighbors friends and family is great but the county and collages should get you on track. Finding out what your soil is composed of and what is lacking for the crop you want to plant for the best out come isn't a bad idea.

If you plan on getting just one four wheeler, look at the touring models. They are slightly bigger as they are designed for 2 riders. Most states are changing the rules, and not allowing 2 riders on models that are designed for one rider. Good luck with the frost seeding.

If you take a dethatcher with stationary spikes on it, once seeded, it will set those seeds in the dirt somewhat for better germination, it will be like you've raked it a little hard on the surface and help with germination. If I lived a little closer I'd borrow you mine!

Those drag behind spikers are pretty cheap and are really fast.

@@augustreil They work...I've used mine several times when we reseeded a 4 acre lot and other areas when we replaced our septic tank, and after constructing a 200 ft. Tall boulder wall around our pole barn after the heavy equipment ruined the grass in the entire area. You have no idea what was done but have a non chalant know-it-all opion!

If you think a four wheeler is useful. Get a side by side. I’ve got one and I wouldn’t swap it for half dozen four wheelers. That bed is where it’s at

Frost seeding in my experience you typically get a 60-80% germination with good seed to soil contact so you put it on heavier than normally would. Also realistically along the woodline not much of anything is going to grow besides moss or shade plants

Instead of an ATV look at Japanese mini trucks, much cheaper. Spend extra to get one with a dump bed. Street legal in many states.

If you decide to do the bigger field check with your local ag extension agent or local farmers coop and you should be able to rent a drill cheap to do the job.

I notice the bare spots are near the tree line. Could the shade factor have anything to do with the thin grass? I son't know the direction of the trees but if they are south or west that may have a effect on the grass.

Trees block the sun, use the water and nutrients. A lot of starter fertilizer and lime would help big time.

Grasses won't grow in dead soil. I don't recall you doing anything to build up humus. A couple of inches of manure on top and some form of carbon, perhaps wood chips, on top of that to get it started.

We put down lime, nitrogen and phosphorus last summer after a soil test, right before we replanted.

Sorry, but that's not nearly enough. You need to build up the humus in the soil, and that only comes from composted plant material.

Hey bud I don't mean to tell ya what to do but growing up on a dairy farm my great grandfather adamantly refused to put his cows out to pasture. Why? When you do that you lose feed. Animals trample more than they eat so if you keep them off of it you will gain more. You could maybe get three cuttings off of it and that's a lot more volume then letting the animals eat off of the twelve acres. Incase you care about my opinion haha Arborist from Wisconsin

The company that made that spreader with a toe bar that was meant for a tractor or rider is utterly ridiculous putting that speed of broadcast. A human walking speed is faster than that!

Use what ya got, I say! Thats what i do to reseed our pasture here. Quad with the same spreader. Its faster and WAY easier on my hip joints than walking the pasture with a hand spreader, and I’ve done both.
