This time of year, when the mornings are frosty, but the afternoons are sunny and warm, is a great time to do some work to improve your pastures.
Frost Seeding is a technique of planting pasture with no machines needed. Homesteaders and Farmers can take advantage of the heaving and freezing/thawing process to help them plant pasture seeds.

White or Red Clover, or Rye Grass makes a great forage for animals, and those seeds do well with frost seeding. Seeds are broadcast on the surface of the ground, and the daily freezing and thawing moves the seeds into the soil, helping to plant them without any machines or tilling.
This no till method of adding forage to your property can increase your forage quality, and that in turn can save you money on hay bills and feed expenses this upcoming season.
Don't miss this window of opportunity to get your pastures off to a good start! Frost seed now!

I remember helping bale hay as a kid many years ago. When i go by a new mown hay field and smell the fresh cut hay that is one of life's best pleasures.

Connecticut seems like one of the places in the US that is most unhelpful to homesteaders. Their taxes and regulations are formidable. We applaud you, Homesteady!

I learned so much from this video. I went to tractor supply today and purchased some mixed pasture seed. I am in southern Ohio and we are suppose to freeze and warm up all the next 7 days. I live on very hilly pasture and have never done this before in the 25 years I have been here. I spent a long time walking and seeding the hills and flats today. My goats spooked when they saw me with the hand spreader spraying seed out. I am hopeful for good results. Thanks so much for the inspiration ! I am still learning after all the time.

We are going to frost seed this next week as well. Great video! There's not a lot of information on KZfaq concerning this topic. Great job!

This was a very helpful video for us. I am assuming you could clover your yard in the city at that time too. Since we are housesitting in Pennsylvania right now we could frost seed clover into the grass. We are in the county with a forest bordering the lawn. In reality we had lawns but this is not our home. We would have the whole place in animals and garden.

The princess bride! Haha love it. Isn't it just amazing getting stocked up on hay? Lol the simple things. I can't say I've ever frost seeded before, I might give it a try.

Thanks for this video! I'd never heard of frost seeding before. Here in central British Columbia our pastures are still under err...3 feet of snow on March 2nd 😩 But that gives me some lag time to order seed to try frost seeding later this month (hopefully).

I’m jealous of your hay prices! I know things tend to be more expensive in CT, but you can count your blessings that you don’t have AZ hay prices 😂 $12.50 a bale!
