Frostbite sail on Delaware Bay near Pea Patch Island and the Chesapeake & Delaware Bay Canal.
Cold, gray, rain, fog and very light winds on this frostbite sail in January.

Good idea to avoid that shipping lane with the fog. Those ships are moving allot fast than they look from a distance. Another good sail and video.

Yes, safety first. The fog was real spotty with patches of clear and patches of dense fog. Agree the ships move way faster than they look. Another concern was the wake from the ships hitting the beach (mud) front that I pulled up on....only 100 feet from the ship channel.....got lucky this time... Liked your washing machine video. Going out, I saw you had the sail reefed.... headwinds? I normally keep the sail out if possible to provide extra thrust in navigating shoaling inlets with strong currents and waves. Outboard too! Enjoy one of my surf blooper videos.... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nquiaaWYv9alYXU.html

My wife and I sail a TI. Ever since the first season, I sit in the front to take most of the spray. If I go out alone, i get the Princess (rear seat). By the way have you ever seen available antennas for the TI? I'm thinking a wip at the top of the mast, with cabling running down the sleeve of the sail. The connnector could be very close to the bottom of the sail, with an additional short cable that would be attached when the radio is actually needed. Any ideas? We are very impressed with your filming. Our single (handheld GoPro) vides don't touch yours. Regards

Thanks for the comments. I do carry a handheld floating marine radio (Standard Horizon and Cobra). But I have had limited success in using the radio (can receive ok, but other people hearing my transmissions has been poor unless close by (direct line of site). I have not thought about a whip antenna. Should be straightforward to rigging on top of the mast and running the cable inside the sail sleeve that the mast runs through. Just not certain what you would connect it to. The TI, as you point out, is a wet ride and any electronics will be exposed to salt water damage. I also rely on my cell phone for communications and carry an ACR Electronics ResQLink 400 Personal Locator Beacon satellite locator for big emergencies. Keep the videos coming!

Would you detail the clothes you use for your cold weather sails? I sail Minnesota lakes but so far just warmer summer days. I switch to rowing my canoe with a Frontrower rowing rig on colder days. I stay warm rowing without warm clothes. But you are inspiring me to try some cold weather sailing.

I use a dry suit for TI sailing. It is a game changer. If your not familiar with dry suits - recommend exploring them. Basically under the dry suit I wear blue jeans, extra pair of socks, a couple of top layers and either a vest or light jacket (all under the dry suit). If it gets cold I add more layers. I also use a wetsuit hood. If warmer - I use less layers. Bottom line.... you stay dry. I have found that I use the dry suit from Sep to May and even sometimes in the summer on long sails. Big help with hydrothermia. Bottom line # 2: the dry suit added 6 additional months of sailing time compared to pre dry suit. Dry suits are not cheap.... but worth every penny in added warmth and safety. Enjoy the sailing. See prior frostbite videos with much higher wind speeds.... I use a helmet with a face shield on very windy frostbite sails. Hope this helps.

nice video. question. seems like the main sheet rubbing the shoulder could be avoided by sitting in the forward position?? I know access to motor not as good, but is the boat balanced if you switched position?

Yes the main sheet does clip you a fair bit when tacking and sailing the rear seat. Tradeoffs between less comfort in the forward seat from water spray and the main sheet issues in the rear seat. Most TI sailors seem to sail from the rear. Also helps with keeping the bow up a bit in waves. Bottom line - you can sail from either seat - mostly an individual preference.
