Howdy. What are the foam pieces that you put on top of the AKAs? Just wondering what purpose they serve. Looks like you had an awesome wind day on that one, great ride.

I would get frustrated by the constant water spray. I think I would try to put wings under the boat to make it rise above the water, on foils.

A few people have done just that - put foils on the TI. Yes you can get a bit wet. Part of the fun (especially with frostbite sailing in January and February)!

Greetings James, I purchased a new Hobie TI last June and have been following your videos ever since. I have a home in Bowers Beach, DE where I'm currently located and travel between here and our Florida residence. Bowers Beach is about an hour south of Delaware City. If you're in the area for the next few days, it would be great to meet up. Thanks for another nice video. This one really demonstrates the capabilities of the TI.

Thank you for the comment. Glad you are enjoying your TI. Would love to meet up for a sail and Bowers Beach is fully doable on my end. I am tied up for the next few weeks with family care duties. Will be sailing out of Sea Isle City and the Atlantic Ocean from mid Aug to mid Sep. May be able to squeeze in another Delaware Bay sail over the next 4 weeks but most likely 2nd half of Sep. Where in FL do you sail? I sail a fair bit in the FL Keys and Marco Island.

Hello James, You deserve your 1M views. Love your videos, and how you hold your sheet in the tacks in those big winds. I'm also a TI sailor based in SW Michgan where we have many great waters. Like you I like to trailer around the E Coast as well. You also haven't picked up a spinnaker. I think about it but usually have too much wind for it to matter. I need to add a small outboard like you have to be more efficient getting out to big waters from the docks like you have, and also in case of trouble. I've been thinking about a pocket cruiser like a NorSea 27 but watching your work makes me think "just stay with the TI and maybe get a second one to increase the fleet with growing family". I spend most of my life overseas and am still about 10 years from retirement. Still, I use my TI whenever I'm in the US, just trailer it around. Would love to meet up and cruise with you if someday. Enjoy your kites, family and good life. Rick

Thanks for the reply Rick. For some reason this video got published prior the youtube 4k processing was completed. Hope you come back in a few hours to enjoy the final product. I would love to meet up. I have family in Holland and Sparta, MI. Was almost there in July but family issues held me back. Any time you make it to the East Coast or even the Keys in FL we can meet up. I had a spinnaker sail on one of my older TIs but sold it as I could not use it in the higher wind speeds and tacking was problematic with the way Hobie implemented the back stay. The small motor is a key safety component for the type of sailing that i do (solo in big waters....with tidal currents...).

I normally use the rudder down. On this run I was experimenting using the outboard and vectoring the thrust to adjust the steering..... with the main goal of speed to try to stay ahead of the waves.... failed on both accounts (steering and speed). I share these videos for others to learn from my mistakes (and a few successes). Still enjoying the Hobie TI.

So far i have seen a disaster waiting to happen due to shortage seamanship a rudder use is essential for good surfing way to shore, a better use of the conflict in wind take, this is essential as i sea😂 only all the good parameters to cross this waves wall, should have been cleared on first run without 😂😂😂😂😂

Ha, this was a collection of my failures.... always tricky in the surf. Several rudder pin snaps (hitting sandbar) and thus unexpected no rudder for steering in the surf... Always open to new ideas.

Hi James, I’m actually Thomas James Power: great video! Live in Michigan and mostly sail Lake Michigan or Lake Erie. Have a Compac Eclipse and a Sea Pearl 21. 2022 took the Sea Pearl to Key Largo. Downsized from Catalina 30. The Hobie and Wind Rider look like really nice boats… especially for places like Florida Bay. I enjoy just getting out and leisurely pottering around. Did you fabricate the motor mount? Have the same motor on the Sea Pearl. Subscribed to your channel and will check out more of your videos.

TI are absolutely NOT offshore worthy. No matter what you add on to them. It clearly states CE SAFETY RATINGS D use in sheltered waters and low winds only. Get yourself a WINDRIDER 17 and all worries are history. Done EXACTLY that.

Agree. I have looked at the Windrider 17, but decided to stick with the Hobie TI and beef it up a bit, partially due to storage in a small garage.

Great video Jim. I still hope to buy a Hobie Tandem Island. I purchased a Windrider 16 but it is very heavy for me. I am 73 years old and would really like to have a Tandem Iskand. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
@seewind
@seewind 3 күн бұрын
Agree. The Hobie TI is much lighter than the Windrider boats and is easier to handle, especially in shallow waters, getting it launched of beaches and boat ramps.

Nice video Jim, thanks for posting it. I enjoyed the two pups keeping track of all the sandbar people. They looked pretty comfortable aboard so you must get them out fairly often. And it was interesting to see that you have two now. I've been sailing the TI in Michigan and the AI in LaCrosse, WI, but not as much this summer. I've gotten into playing pickleball and spend a lot of time on the courts. So I only posted one or two videos in the past few months - still have some raw video to edit into something worth watching. I look forward to seeing new posts of your recent sailing trips. Thanks again for posting. I viewed your KAP informational videos too - are you still doing that or are you mostly using the drones now? Take care and have some good adventures this fall and winter. Lee

I am enjoying your videos and learning from you. I bought a used TI (2017) a couple of months ago. I was wondering if you had a video of your Jib and how you rigged it? I have seen a couple of ideas out there but nothing in detail on a video. Keep posting your videos and I will keep watching them.
@seewind

Thanks for the comment. Sorry for the late reply. As for the jib, this is actually the Hobie spinnaker sail. I had it and use it on my prior 2016 TI. I sold the TI and spinnaker. Currently sailing the 2022 TI. I found the Hobie spinnaker setup was cumbersome to operate and only could be used in winds less than 15 mph. As I routinely sail in winds over 15 mph I decided not to add the spinnaker to my Hobie 2022 TI. There are a few good videos on setting up the spinnaker. (just search for Hobie Island spinnaker).

Great video, very educational. I'm a life long surfer and sailor but have yet to try a Hobie TI. What exactly failed in the first clip? One of the plastic pins? That would be my guess. If I were to offer any advice it would be to try to time when you have to go through the "crunch zone". Surf comes in sets with a lull between them. If you time it right (which it looks like you did in some later clips) you can power through the waves and avoid the bigger sets. Slow down if you have to and let a wave crash in front of you instead of on top of you. Otherwise all you can do is exactly what you did, power up, head directly for the wave and hope for the best. Thanks for sharing!
@seewind
@seewind 3 күн бұрын
Sorry for the very late reply.... Yes, in this and other surf videos I had the rudder pin snap which disabled the rudder in the middle of the surf (not a fun feeling). I some cases the waves pushed the TI backwards and the rudder hit the sandbar popping the pin. Best bet is to power through with both the sail and mirage drives (and sometimes an outboard) providing maximum thrust. The wave sets and size are very unpredictable and hard to time in these waters.
