Frozen Sewer Roof Vent Fix Update

Almost froze solid but somehow was still working. Almost two weeks after this video the vent closed enough to where we could start to smell it in the house so I went up and poured some water on the blockage, weather had been rather cold for an extended period. Here is a video link to insulating this upper pipe
• Frozen Sewer Roof Vent...
Also do you know Jesus is the Son of God and Jesus is the word of God as well and that all things were made by him? Our sins, mine and yours must be paid for. God does not want us to pay for our sins ourselves (hell) so He made a way for us to be saved by grace. Jesus became flesh (man) and allowed Himself to be unjustly killed on the cross to pay for our sins, He did this on your behalf (and mine as well). After his death He was buried and rose again on the third day. No one is good enough to be saved and that is why Jesus paid dearly for your sins and mine as well. He loves you. You have been given enough information now for you to call upon Jesus to be saved. Be willing to turn from sin and through prayer ask Jesus to save you and then be baptised in His name. Jesus is the only way to be saved and the only way to the Father, call upon Jesus. It's the most important thing you can do.

I put a 6" Schedule 40 PVC Pipe (6" x 2') I ordered off of Amazon around our soil pipe (with foam stuff and silicone layer atop) because it was located on the back side of the house...NW corner with no sunlight during the winter) and always created the sewer smell every winter and the drainpipe choking sound when the stool was flushed. Then I'd have to pour water down the drains to get rid of the smell and fill the pipes again. The weather has been well below zero for a solid week plus this winter and no smell nor choking sounds. So, the 6" diameter pipe may be just what is needed to keep that annoying pipe open. Worked for me!! Thanks for your idea!! (By the way, I cut the 2-foot PVC pipe in half as it makes it much easier to fill with foam stuff, and then seal the cut with good grade paintable caulking and spay the whole project with black automotive Rust oleum spray paint to blend in with the roof.) We did it in three stages: first the 1-footer with foam, then the second foot gorilla glued to the first footer. Then after everything was dry, we put the silicone layer atop after shaving excess foam.

@@MN-bj8lk Nice to hear your good results, I think mine has improved with the insulated pipe so I don't have to climb onto the roof as often, maybe if my outer pipe was black instead of white it may give added improvement as well.

Old plumber trick for cold Canadian winters. Get some soft copper tubing and make a hook on one end. Feed the other end as far down the stack vent as you can get it and hook the hook over the edge of the outside pipe. The copper tube will conduct heat upwards and keep the vent from freezing over. Cheers

Hey Grouta, That's really solid, now I need to think if mine is frozen... not that I could even get up there 10/12 pitch with 2' of snow on the roof. Was thinking of you last week driving 401 to 403 on our way to and from Detroit. Hope you're doing well!

Barely working it seems, also not often we get these kind of temps. I can remember many years ago we got down to -40 now that was cold, I remember even the seat in my truck felt stiffer than normal and the engine started to overheat because the antifreeze was a little weak not allowing proper flow through the rad.
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it much due to this insane weather we're having. If it didn't give you grief for the last 3 years, I doubt it's going to. I suppose if you wanted to you could always put a little heat tape around it under the insulation in the attic and if the house gets stinky, plug it in for a couple of hours.

@anglosaxon1622 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheBrokenLife That idea of heating the vent pipe has been suggested previously ,I myself thought about it but then there is the question of heater element in the attic, fire risk, probably will not meet code regulations, city not happy, ah well better forget that idea. 😣

@@anglosaxon1622 As with everything else on this channel, I'm expecting people to be accountable for their actions and not behave like idiots. If the house starts to stink, plug it in for a couple of hours wasn't an unclear suggestion. Don't just plug it in and walk away forever thinking everything is going to be fine... City? Code? Any chance you have a septic field/tank? Seems to happen more with those. With a traditional sewer there seems to be a constant flow of air from the outside to the inside. With tank/fields you seem to get more moist air coming from inside the house rising, causing the frost issue. My father in-law was fighting the same issue....he ended up putting heat trace around the pipe. Today was -41 straight temp as I drove to work...truck is parked outside and wasn't happy to be started. (Steinbach MB)

@groutaone
@groutaone 5 жыл бұрын
Yes the elusive curve, commonly found with an inferior mirage or a fish eye lens, Ranty has done a good job showing visual distortions over water, he made an excellent observation showing a ship getting visually compressed primarily on the hull and the upper part of the ship remained mostly unaffected.

This video was from about three years ago so I will guess it was out of curiosity and to make a video, I have had trouble with the vent since this video, I may remove the outer white pipe and redo it this summer with a larger black outer pipe, the bigger pipe is to allow more insulation and black to add heat from the sun.

@@groutaone i see...I am here because tub gurgling when flush toilet....ZERO F for 4 days now ....figure roof issues as everything seems to drain fine....ty- Merry Christmas :)
@groutaone
@groutaone Жыл бұрын
@@grandtvideo7750 Ah yes, the tub gurgling during a flush is a sign of a frozen roof vent. I think what happens is water enters the pipe during a flush and the air displaced from that inside the pipe has to go somewhere but if the vent is closed the air can be forced out other drains causing the gurgling sound.
