2:39 Nice view of the river mole, I used to go fishing down there! Nice fizzy BTW, having said that my Honda MT5 has it beat, I get an easy 55 out of it but I admit that it has taken a lot of effort and modifications to get it to go this fast. 40 years ago it was the same thing, I had an MT5, a mate at school had a fizzy, it was a race every day going home.
@itzajdmting9 ай бұрын
Haha those were the days eh.... what mods did you make to the mt5? My dt50 did 47mph during my CBT, but then as far as I recall, it would only ever pull to 40 on a flat. Maybe it would go over a bit downhill. There was a rumour that the old DT 50s were capable of 50-55+ fully deristricted. Not something I ever tinkered with though sadly. Big regret. Was still the fastest of all the 50s round my way. Apart from a lad who went to the same college who had a Derbi Senda. That would do 50 on a flat all day out the box. But they were very pricey.
@sidecarbod14419 ай бұрын
@@itzajdmting I must admit I've cheated a bit!...Its running a 66cc big bore kit although that on its own would not make all that much difference. I've modified all the ports which was pretty tricky as the bore is so small. The head has had a lot of work, it has been totally reprofiled and now has a working squish band with 0.6mm clearance. The CR is 13.5:1 (uncorrected). I've cut open the exhaust and removed the restrictions, it also runs a proper baffle cone inside the exhaust, it looks stock from the outside. I'm running fibre reeds with the reed stop bent back, the carb is up from 13mm to 18mm, it has had to be extensively re-jetted, the inlet manifold has been opened up to match the new carb. The restriction in the air filter has been removed. The standard ignition starts to misfire at around 7500 RPM, its a spare spark system which means that at 7500 RPM the CDI is sparking at 15000 RPM, I've modified the ignition trigger system so that it now fires only once per revolution, the engine runs to 9000 RPM now. The last 'big' mod that I've done is to fit an MTX80 six speed box in place of the 5 speed box. The bike is a 'sleeper', it looks immaculate but stock but goes much better than stock. I recon it can hit 60+ down hill but I've geared the bike so that it will pull 55 all day long, I don't like 'over-geared' bikes. Looking back I think that I got a bit carried away with all of this but it does make me laugh when I'm out and about on it, more so than my Triumph 1050 Speed Triple!

The Puch Grand Prix was available in a colour scheme that looked like a packet of JPS cigarettes but the letters jumbled together were actually SDP (for Steyr-Daimler-Puch, not the political party formed several years later by among others William Rodgers who was the minister of transport at the time the 30mph restriction was placed on mopeds in 1977.)

Great video! The best scene was overtaking the Mercedes again :-) What was Fizzy's legal speed in the UK? In Germany it was limited to 40 km/h (24.85 mph). In the open 50cc class, Yamaha had the RD 50 DX (6.25 hp, 85 kph). Sales were difficult back then against the Zundapps, Hercules and Kreidlers, so all 50cc Yamaha bikes from the 70s are very, very rare in Germany today.
@cedriclynch Жыл бұрын
Up to July 1977 there was no legal restriction on the top speed of mopeds in the UK. They had to be under 50cc and have pedals by means of which they could be propelled. The FS1E would usually do about 45mph (72km/h) without modification. The one in this video is going remarkably well and sounds as though it has its original exhaust system. Mopeds registered from August 1977 had to be designed not to exceed 30mph (48km/h) but were no longer required to have pedals.

52 = 45 in the real world. Yamaha speedos were a bit optimistic at the time. Try doing it with a sat nav and you will find that 42-43 is the top speed. If you thrash them they will do 45. Downhill, 48. I've got a fizzie, and was most disappointed when this was pointed out to me and I tested it for myself. Still, the 55 legend was good for stories of yore'...

Everyone used to take the piss out of my ss50 but with a c70 top end and carb none of them could keep up with it, they had no idea, it also did twice as many mpg as the 2 strokes and it never failed to start and didn’t heat sieze. My mates nan lived in hazelmere so we decided to ride our peds there, about 220 miles, if my memory serves me right it took about 12 hours to get there with at least 2 hours waiting for his fizzy to cool down. Got back a lot quicker though, his uncle felt sorry for us and loaded the bikes in his van. Really pleased I had the opportunity to have little adventures like that though.

@@kevrussell5972 God yeah I remember doing that.
