FTX Vantage 2.0 is going brushless with a new ESC and motor

In this video I'm going through a few upgrades before I mount the new ESC and the new motor.
Thanks to the kind people at MB Models (not sponsored), I was able to order these great components, and was you will see in the video the buggy has been involved in some action where I was fortunate to learn more about car setup.
While becoming familiar with the buggy in the last few weeks the original brushed motor went out in smoke, something wasn't quite right in its last days, I tried to clean it with disc brake fluid to see if would improve the situation and it went out in smoke, I was close enough to react quickly and disconnect everything without major issues. It was the perfect moment to get the new motor and esc.
I'll do a video in a near future about suspension oil, and the differences and why you may want to use certain grades.
The original weight of the buggy was 1710g (advertised weight) without battery, after making many changes and use aluminium and carbon parts the current weight is 1595g.
I found the space in this buggy quite limited, this is because it's a narrow chassis, so it was tricky to make this upgrade in this limited amount of space where the ESC was right next to the motor, but in the end there was just enough!
I'll be using this buggy at a local track to continue to familiarise with they way it handles and eventually will be moving into the Team Xray XB4 (see my other videos on that build).
Main electronics upgrades:
- Servo: SAVOX SC-0352
- Motor: Hobbywing Xerun V10 (G3)
- ESC: Hobbywing Quicrun 10BL120 sensored
- Receiver: Sanwa RX-482
- Transmitter: Sanwa MT-S
The servo is a great upgrade to the buggy, it's 6kg (double the stock), very strong and agile.
If you are interested, the spur gear is 65t 0.6mod and pinion is 23t 0.6 mod. It's perfect for the local track as there's a lot of bends, meaning you probably want torque over speed on this situations.
The original tyres will be replaces for a more appropriate astroturf tyres, in my case I'm choosing the following:
- Rear: Yellow Schumacher Darts U6826
- Front: Yellow Schumacher Cactus Fusion U6855
One of the things you did not see in the videos is that the wheel bearings should be cleaned and oiled appropriately, I'm using the HUDY bearing oil (DY106230).
Also don't forget to connect the port cable from the ESC to the motor as this sends all the crucial information to the ESC such as motor heating temperatures. The QUICRUN 10BL120-SD to not only provides high power output but also has overload protection of the ESC circuit.
I hope you enjoy, this has been very rewarding for me and it continue to be a learning curve to edit these videos, this one may be the first of many with a tiny bit of background music.

Fair play to you that is some serious mods, nice looking buggy. From what I can see the mods alone on the car must be £200 or so. Do you think all the upgrades have made much difference? I'm looking at the Brushless version and would probably do some of the mods you have done wondering what one's to potentially go for.

Thank you! I honestly think the biggest change is the chassis, that alone is the biggest improvement, although don’t choose the carbon chassis, the aluminium is the best option, you want to reduce all the flexibility that the original plastic chassis have. Then you can think of upgrading the motor and the ESC, and at the same time upgrade the shock oils to something you know, I’d say 700cst front shocks and about 450cst rear - adjust from there depending on what you looking for. I’d save the rest of the money, I don’t think all the blue aluminium parts are that necessary but I let you judge that.

just about to buy the brushless version, its good to see the upgrades I'm planning on pretty much doing the lot, any reason you haven't gone for the carbon upper plate? or just didn't get round to it yet.

At the time I didn’t see the point in spending an extra £20 for the upper plate since the carbon chassis is quite stiff, didn’t felt it was adding £20 of value to be honest. I’m also unsure about buying the brushless model if you are interested in upgrading the whole buggy it may be good to look at other options

Brushless version is not worth the extra money - the motor is very mild and the esc junk (40 amp). Better to buy the brushed version and buy your own brushless esc/motor with the money saved. Regarding the upgrades in the vid ... the BL120 is a great esc for the money, the hobbywing motor not so much - you can get good motors for less money (e.g. a surpass rocket).
