Good video, unfortunately I installed sierra fuel pump made by carter last season and got about 10-15 hours out of it. Don't know what else to get?!?!?! Carter was made in Taiwan new amazon special made in China and all honesty I don't have my hopes up for this one. ANY GOOD USA MADE PUMPS OUT THERE???

It can be hard to tell from the hose. The best flow is in the tank or submerged in water. You want to check the temperature gauge to make sure the engine is running in the correct range. It is a good idea to replace the water pump impeller and thermostat if you do not know the service history. I have a video on both of those as well How to Replace the Thermostat on a Mercruiser 260 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mt97lNNhqs-rdqs.html

Thank you for your videos they have helped me understand more about my engine. I have a recently purchased 1986 Condor Mach 1 with the same engine as this video. The problem I'm having is out of the water and unloaded she goes through the full rpm range. In the water and under load I can't get her over 3000 rpm and she refuses to have any power out of the hole. I can eventually get her to plane out and run all day at 31mph and 2800 rpm but I can't get any more. I replaced the cap plugs wires and fuel/water separator. Any other thoughts? Thank you for your time!

Thank you! I'm glad my videos are useful. Since the boat is new to you, I would ck the adjustments like throttle linkage, engine timing, change all the fuel filters etc. You'll want to make sure that the throttle is opening the carb all the way. My guess would be that the carb probably needs to be rebuilt. Most of the power comes when the back barrels of the quadrajet open up and you will hear it when it happens. I have a video of my engine running on the water and you can hear that on that video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/otiol5R2ypybZZc.html

hey man, awesome video! really appreciate it. My 5.0 Mercruiser TKS keeps stalling out in idle after being warmed up. I had it running for an hour in idle after a cold start, thought it fixed itself! Turned it off then back on deliberately to see if it would stay running, but it just kept stalling after each subsequent start. Think it could be the fuel enrichment module aka TKS module? Or more likely the mechanical fuel pump? (I should also add the boat continues to run if I had power and will not stall)

It’s really hard to say- kind of sounds like carburetor problems. I would start off by making sure you got good clean fuel filters. Check your carburetor adjustments. Glad you liked the video- thanks!

I have a mercruiser 5.7 carbed model circa 1995. I think it may have been repowered at some point because the cover that sits over the carb says mercruiser 5.0 I had to pull the heads had shop resurface them and replace the blown head gasket. The 5.0 gasket didn’t fit, 5.7 gasket sure did. I am probably the third owner or so and it originally had a mechanical fuel pump probably. When I bought it it has an electric fuel pump and it’s been an issue. Once up and running it’s fine but when the boat sits for days between uses it’s a bear to start again. If I hook the fuel pump direct to battery to reprime it I will get gas squirting when I hit the throttle to start it. It’s wired to an oil pressure switch that SHOULD be activating the fuel pump via the starter wire that’s also connected to the oil pressure switch then once started the power should come from the key on purple wire to another terminal on the oil pressure switch that’s normally open until it sees 5 psi. It takes lots of cranking before fuel pump kicks on and can be heard. It’s a new oil pressure switch from maybe 10 months ago. I just want to be able to turn the key and start it. Are electric fuel pumps supposed to lose prime as they sit? Is there a check valve in the fuel pick up tube inside the tank? I’m at a point where if it’s been sitting I’m going to connect straight power to prime the fuel pump first, squirt fuel in the carb, disconnect straight power and do first start up that way every time. Boat shop gives me wiring diagrams but it is connected correctly. Another bad oil pressure switch already? All I know is the added on electric fuel pump has been nothing but a pain in the ass this whole time. Any input greatly appreciated

The newer model carburated Mercruiser engines come with electric fuel pumps. It sounds like you may have a couple of things going on. It sounds like your carburetor may be leaking the fuel out of the fuel bowl. This is a common problem on the quadrajet carburetors and there are some plugs on the bottom of the carb that can be epoxied during the rebuild process to fix that problem. If the fuel bowl is empty when you try to start it, you will have a very long crank time until you get that fuel bowl filled up. If it runs fine after primed and started- this carb is your main issue. You may also want to check the fuel pressure of your fuel pump. I believe those are supposed to be somewhere between 3-7 psi, depending on the model. Its also a good idea to install new fuel filters. Plugged fuel filters can cause a restriction. I hope this helps you.

How many gaskets go in? My kit came with 2 thin gaskets and 1 thick harder gasket , do I install all 3? In your video it looked like you just installed the thinner gasket ? Also, what silicone did you use for the access bolt?

Question. I'm new to boats and I am mainly used to newer engines. It's my first time having a carbureted engine. I have a 1985 mericruiser 350 engine in my boat and it doesn't seem to be getting fuel to the carburetor. I replaced the fuel filter, added new fuel, and still nothing. Also, the boat has 2 gas tanks. How do I know which is active? If anyone can help me with this, I'd be super grateful.
@ProWrenching
@ProWrenching 2 жыл бұрын
Start at the carburetor and work backwards. If you’re not getting fuel to the carburetor then check to see if you’re getting fuel to fuel pump. If not, follow the fuel line back to the tank and the selector valve until you find the problem. That’s how you’ll figure out which gas tank is active, too.

I have a 454 Mercruiser with mechanical fuel pump. It has a bulb fuel primer going to fuel water separator filter. Do a really need a hand bulb primer at all? Shouldn't the mechanical fuel pump work fine?
@ProWrenching
@ProWrenching Ай бұрын
Mine doesn’t have a primer bulb. It could come in handy if your boats been sitting a while, would prevent the extra cranks from the fuel pump having to build up fuel in the carburetor.

So assuming a person pulled the vacuum line off and it had gas in it the pump would be bad, correct? There should never be gas in there for any other reason?
@ProWrenching
@ProWrenching 2 жыл бұрын
Yes- that would be bad. If there’s fuel in the line, it would be from the diaphragm of the fuel pump leaking so the pump would be bad.

Hey man. Using a lot of your videos. Just grabbed an 85 260. Just bought the Sierra pump. Came with 3 gaskets. I’m assuming this is so they can fit different applications but they are all the same shape. One is thick snd I don’t know if writing should go on the motor side or pump side. The other two appear same thickness. Ha

Hey- great to hear, glad you’re finding my videos helpful! All 3 gaskets will work, but try to match up the thickness of the original gasket if you can. If you can’t tell- just use the medium thickness gasket. I’ve installed the writing both ways, so it shouldn’t matter.

@@ProWrenching thank you ! Appreciate it. Yup I’m going to eventually do the impeller and thermostat, cap rotor and wires yadda yadda. It ran great at idle but after about 20-30 seconds at 3/4 power it died. Had to blip throttle wide open to get it to catch while cranking starter and keep blipping to get it to hold idle or if I didn’t play with it right after catching it would die. After about 5 blips it was back to normal and would idle great all day long. Once I slowly sped up to 2000 rpm it died again. Then same restart thing snd I idled it back to the dock. Just waiting for the last of the parts now and hoping to resplash here In a week. I’ve only had it in the water that one time. At home sure enough starts great, runs at idle perfectly, can blip throttle without stumbling. Unable to duplicate issue on trailer. This is a big beast of a trailer boat so it’s not fun to launch and test. It’s a Santa Cruz 26 (made by carver ) I was pushing on the wires off the distributor cap and got electrocuted on the wire in the center of the coil so yeah new wires coming too. And plugs. Try some ignition stuff snd some fuel stuff. Almost feels like it was flooding.
@ProWrenching
@ProWrenching 2 жыл бұрын
@@Natter20002 It sounds like it could possibly be a carburetor issue. May need to rebuild the carb. Also check the choke. It’s good to have new plugs, new wires (like you said), check the timing, no loose wires at the battery or ignition coil. You might pull the dipstick & see if the oil smells like gas. That’s a sign of flooding. Good luck with your repairs. Hope you get on the water soon. Stay tuned- got more videos coming later on installing new exhaust manifolds.

@@ghostnumber717 I’m not near my boat to check for sure, but i believe the bolt is a 3/8” thread. Very short, maybe like a 1/2”. You don’t want a long bolt on there b/c it will interfere with the push rod that runs ftom the cam to the fuel pump. You’ll want to install it with some RTV gasket sealer on the threads so it doesn’t leak oil.
