Considering this is an f/1.0 lens, the compromises aren't bad at all. The Canon 50mm f/1.0 is just craziness in and out, but this is actually a usable modern lens with beautiful bokeh rendering and apparently some nice character. I think I'll give it a shot once business is back to normal.

The Canon 50mm f/1 came out in 1989 and worked with 35mm/full frame. This lens is really not that impressive, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN gives you more background blur on a full frame camera and costs less...

I would definitely buy a 33mm f1.0 as it is a very versatile focal length. 50 mm is not what I need in everyday photography. If I need a lens specifically for portraits, I'll buy a used XF90 f2 for a fraction of the price of the XF50 f1.

Don't put hope on it. That's 1kg++ monster, hence why it's cancelled. Fuji always stays close to FF lens weight and size. If FF is around 800gram for 85 1.4 then the 50 1.0 is also around that ballpark. 50 1.4 FF is around 800grams as well. Fuji won't release a lens heavier and bigger than FF, the balance would be off as well.

The 56 f1.2 is a sharp lens and the 50 f1.0 looks marginally sharper 8:19, so for me sharpness here will not be an issue. Fujifilm should have kept this as a 33 f1.0. Nevertheless it is a great lens and one I hope to buy one in the near future.

If you look at the MTF charts on Fuji's site this is very apparent. I think the consistency of sharpness across the frame made other reviewers perceive F/1.0 to be more sharp than it really is. But like Chris said, this is a portrait lens so being perfectly sharp wide open isn't necessarily ideal. Sigma and Canon both make excellent super well corrected fast 85mm's for the type of photographer that wants minimal CA and maximum sharpness wide open, and on the other side this 50mm shot wide open is for those who want more of a 'film' look off their digital camera.

Corrected for the focal length, the 50/f1 has the exact same DOF as the 56/f1.2. Vey good review. For me its a shame they didn’t make it 56 or 60mm and with a closer focusing distance. For fashion make-up portraits its too wide and too far. So I’ll stick to my switch to FF... For general purposes, Fuji has another often underestimated option which is the 50/f2. Stopped down to f4 its very sharp with good contrast. It’s WR and with silent and fast AF. Highly recommended.

Drink enough beers and one gets wonderful bokeh, and one doesn't even need a camera. Postcript: a chain is 22 yards (the length of a cricket wicket, and was actually measured using a chain); ten chains make a furlong (still used in horse racing), and there are eight furlongs to a mile.

Got to try this out at a Fujifilm event a couple weeks ago. They also had the 50mm F2 and 56mm f1.2 on hand. Have to say the 56mm ruled the day. The color and sharpness was there, and the bokeh was perfect. The color was a tiny bit better on the 50 F1. But was it 50% better? Nope. Also have to say, regardless of what the Fuji guys at the event said, I could not see any difference between the focus speed of the 50 and 56. The 50 F1 is moving more glass to be fair. But in actual use they both seemed identical in that regard. Also the sheer ludicrous size of the 50 F1 makes it quite ungainly with an XT3 or Xpro3. Even on the XT4 they had for try out, it was an awkward balance. So I have to agree, this is a studio lens. Now how do I swing a 56mm on my budget?
@macht4turbo
@macht4turbo 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the review. I'm suprised at the lack of sharpness at f2, as my xf50 f2 seems sharper, judging from youtube anyway. This really seems like a niche lens, i would not want to own one, but i can appreciate, that fuji has such a well rounded lens lineup, that they can afford to provide lenses for niche application. Nevertheless i think some people will be dissapointed, as the fuji crowd really wanted a new lens, because recently it seems, that fuji is not releasing lenses at the former pace. There is still some room to grow or upgrade in the lineup, i hope they will continue to add to the f2 lineup.
@trym2121
@trym2121 3 жыл бұрын
Different usage as Chris has mentioned. This is potrait lens. People buy this to use at f1 not f2. To be exact, more depth of field control. This is what those 56 1.2 owners want, WR version and faster AF for a sturdy workhorse. If for some weird reason someone want brick wall sharp lens then any f2 or f2.8 lens from Fuji is sufficient.

Long time listener, first time poster - X-T2 owner here and I have to ask the question even though I have some idea as to why it costs this much - but - why is it $2699AUD in Australia?! My most expensive lens is the 80mm macro and I get why it retails for $1800 (got mine for $1100 - bargain) - loads of glass, heft, sturdiness, weather sealing and IBIS but the 50mm f1.0 has me slightly stumped as to why it is a whopping $900 more - thoughts people?

What Fuji needs to release are a 16-50 f2.0 and a 50-140 f2.0. I Love fuji and after 2y of research ended up with the Sony a7iii, primarily because of the lack of these versatile ff equivalent focal lengths and apertures. Because they do not have these the only way to get decent background separation is to carry around 4 or 5 primes, which completely negates the “compactness and portability of APS-C.

If you want complete background separation control then bigger sensor is the way to go. Minimum full frame, alternatively medium format. For whatever reason the weight and size of the lens is the same ballpark when you need that crazy fast lens for bokeh like 24-70 f4 is almost same as 16-55 2.8 etc Crop sensor is best when optimized for weight and size, like their 35 1.4, 55-200, 2 or 2.8 primes, etc. Fuji got gfx system if you somehow like Fuji simulation system

Try M too expensive, too cumbersome, slow autofocus for fast moving subjects. Difficult to justify above current crop of excellent FF offerings and lens. To me, f2.0 zooms for their aps-c line up is what would make sense. The current f2,8 (or actually 4,0 equivalent DoF) zooms seem a tad overpriced for what they are.

There is Something Very Nice About the 50mm - (75mm) Focal length on the fuji size APSC Sensor...!!!! In Comparison an 85mm on Full Frame always seems too tight to be Versatile enough for general shooting and compositions other than portraits and still life's with not enough room in the frame to take in a whole scene...seemingly no matter how much you fry to move back...and a wider fifty eg the Tamron 45mm 1.8 VC or the Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX which are both to the wider 45mm end of the focal length just seem much too wide to give the magic of a short telephoto both in terms of the magic of the drawing of the lens and the composition at a given distance... where as a 50mm on a fuji body Just seems to Be the Perfect Goldilocks lens for all occasions....which I have yet to find on Full-frame as even the 70mm end of my Nikon 24-70mm 2.8 ed Just seems too wide to produce the magic and it weighs an absolute tonne.... In truth I have def settled on a 50mm on a Speed Booster on an X-T Body which seems to retain a lot of the magic of the drawing of the lens and poss slightly tighter than a standard 50mm on FF (poss 55mm equivalent) but is wider and more versatile with a massive stop more light (which is really hard to ignore or give up once you've had it, especially for so cheap too...!!!!) in a relatively tiny package and even at the wider focal length is Still Just Magical and So Lovely to Shoot too....especially in monochrome....!!!!! But even so especially with the Pentax 50mm 1.7 on a basic K&F Adaptor it still seems Just absolutely perfect every time in a way which is impossible to achieve on any other system except Leica M mount...!!! Also the Sigma Art and Samyang 50mm 1.4s although tighter in focal length both seem to super from super heavy contrasty coatings like the canon SSC coatings on FD Glass back in the day, which make it near impossible to render natural looking colours without super heavy contrast even if you back the contrast and saturation off all the way (especially on the fuji system where higher contrast is kind of baked in to the jpeg profiles too) which is something that the Sigma 50mm EX version with it's coatings seems to excel at in comparison...which is a really lovely trait and draws beautifully and is really nice and sharp when stopped down to f2 to 2.8 and beyond....!!!!! and focuses really well if you have a nice copy too....!!!!! But as with the Tamron 45mm is really annoyingly just too wide to give that slight telephoto look & composition when shooting really close up to give that added degree of versatility in composition when you need it....!!!!! The two Nikon G's do seem to be almost there in being both slightly tighter and having lovely coatings with the 1.8 having a lovely slightly brown tint reminiscent of the atmosphere of shooting with a really nice vintage manual focus lens or Nikon D lens and the 1.4G which just lets colours sing and bloom in a really special and almost supernatural way although both are slightly limited in that the 1.8 does not have quite a large enough aperture to produce significant Bokeh unless super close to the subject and the 1.4G is super soft wide open and really slow focusing.... which means that compared to Nikon at least a 50mm on a Fuji Body with or without Speed Booster is always an absolute delight to Shoot and very difficult to replicate on Full frame in any other way....!!!!! :)

Does anyone know something about manual focussing in comparison to the xf 56 1.2? I would like to reduce my lens-collection to only one lens per focal length that I can use for both, photo and video. Instead of owning the 56 for photo and a Zeiss Contax Planar 85 1.4 plus speedbooster for video.

If you want that look, just get a full frame camera. Much more cost efficient. You get the same look with a 50mm f/1.4 and that's going to be cheaper as well.

I'm curious, do most people consider this lens for it's subject separation, or for it's low light capabilities? The latter seems to be far more interesting to me, but not many online previews seem to focus on it.
@trym2121
@trym2121 3 жыл бұрын
Low light? Not so much compared to cheaper 56 1.2. it's only like 1/2 stop. People want this for the depth of field control, faster AF, and WR that 56 1.2 doesn't offer.

If you're gonna shoot this at f2 or narrower, the 50mm f2 wr seems like a huge bargain. Saving in nocts and furlongs too.

Fantastic. Fuji again showing crop cameras are great but we need good lenses. There will always be a difference between FF and crop, better ISO and smaller DOF, but if you mount good lens on every crop camera made after 2013, you get superb results that can match the best FF cameras today. Yes, if you print 2x3m there is a difference, but who prints like this. I am supper happy with my D7100 for what I am doing. Street photography and every now ant then some event photos. But next time when I upgrade the body, I will go FF and buy Z6. Not because I need FF, but because selection of lenses in Nikon world is forcing you to do this. There are no alternatives to 35mm F1.4 in DX world. I have 35mm F1.8 DX but it's a piece of plastic and I want more.

@TechnoBabble

While the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 is not as fast, it's razor sharp straight from f/1.4. So depending on the results you're wanting the Sigma might be a significantly better option, especially cause the price is less than 1/3 the Fuji's.

Strangely I don't agree with this review. I found the 50mm f1 to be exceptionally sharp for an f1.0 lens. I had some problems with focusing, that's true, but I'd expect this lens to be used for portraits and possibly perpendicular movement shots, detail shots, street photography with some skill applied and a fairly capable low light beast. I'd like to see lenses as different tools with their own personalities. My ancient pentacon 50mm f1.8 has given me some amazing photos (soap bubbles Galore) but requires a lot of finesse to use perfectly. You have to spend a day or two to get used to the manual focus, but when you do you can get perfect shots off and still retain that beautiful character. The Fuji doesn't feel as heavy as it looks either.
