Since Fujifilm announce the new GFX 100 II camera last week, a lot of people are asking themselves that time-old question - “should I upgrade?”
In this video, I talk you through my reasons for my personal decision to upgrade, and cover 3 distinct groups of people I think fall in to the “yes” or “no” categories.
A Medium-format flagship camera with outstanding performance and now very capable video specifications is a potentially huge value-proposition for professionals and enthusiasts alike, but should you actually buy it?
A HUGE thanks to ‪@CameraProTV‬ for early access to the GFX100 II. Pre-order the new body and lenses on their website: bit.ly/gfx100
Let’s find out.

I never had a medium format camera and was about to get the GFX 100ii when they announced the Black Friday deal with a $1600 discount to the 100s. So with a price of $4,399 for the 100s the decision was easy. (I also own a Red Komodo, so I won't use video at all on the GFX). I have now used the camera for two days and loooove it! Who knows, I might upgrade to the 100ii in the future if I need the faster autofocus and improved ibis, but for now I'm super happy to get into the GFX world for under $4500!!!

Thank you Laz for your observations and great summary. If been a working photographer for close to 40 years shooting 4x5 and 8x10 back in the day (always shooting Fuji film) and then transitioning to digital as it took over the industry. Like you I'm now a hybrid shooter, Canon 5DSR and R5. What I've seen coming out of this camera and the fact they introduced 2 new tilt shift lenses, which I use regularly, has made me consider making the change myself.

Thanks Laz enjoyed the watch 👍 when Fuji announced the up and coming 500mm f5.6 alongside the GFX 2, I suddenly got very very excited about shooting nature and wildlife with this set up. Obviously it’s not going to be ultra fast, but most of my wildlife photography is not actually at high speed. I would love to see the close up detail It can produce for exhibition prints 😃👍🙏

This is a really compelling camera. Im in this exact situation splitting my time between Leica, Fuji gfx and red. I’m really curious of the video image coming off the new Fuji. I think if its like the video off the old gfx 100 it’s not close enough to the red. plus when it comes to codecs I just don’t know how pro res raw will compare to r3d. Not having to bring a red would streamline so much tho. This is tough. I’ll be watching closely for video samples.

Likely picking up the 100s . I have a sony a7s3 with a multitude of primes ranging from voigtlander, gmaster to odd ones like a sigma 105 1.4 which allow me to to do video. Also have my old school a7r3 for portraits and tiny x100v. The medium format fuji will be the camera for that something different that doesn't require speed

Hi. Short and sweet. Excellent analysis. I’m an architect/ consultant who shot medium format film for many years including 69 view camera. The GFX with the tilting rotating evf and the ability to have very wide angle shift or tilt shift lenses in a relatively small form factor makes the GFX the way to go for architecture, product and museum / archive work. To use a copy stand the tilt EVF is a must. I guess my point of view is very niche. Because I never see vids saying this is why to switch. But when this camera came out I had my 100S on eBay in two days. The high resolution EVF probably makes using tilt shift lenses easier to focus. Bottom line for somebody like me who does copy work, paintings sculpture etc. Some macro work and besides architecture, my grand children and occasional wildlife, this camera appears to be able to do it all. The net was about $4000 US to upgrade. And lastly: FUJI: put the damn cable release on the shutter release side of the camera!! Using the 2 or 10 second timer can interfere with making an image. In many scenarios. !!! And next life I will learn to make videos. And film. It is a bit of a drag owning something essentially as good as a Red or Arri and not be able to even put it in first gear let alone drive it. Youth is not wasted on young people …

Excellent comparison of different argumentations along differing needs (and not only wants): there is no "absolute" recommendation, it all depends on what the photographer wants as an output 👍👍👍 ps. I personally would describe me as a semi-pro, focus on street, landscape, stills, events, people - no sports and animals, no video... and I switched to the GFX Medium format with a used GFX 50r and some primes and the 32.64 zoom; i gave away some Sony gear , which I never liked because of the chaotic lens program (normal, G, G master etc., where the "better" lenses optically and mechanically were too expansive for my needs). After the 100s was introduced, I perceived this offer as a massive change in technology - no question: I graded up. and I am still satisfied (the only weak point of the PDAF AF is the weak accuracy, so that in some cases I make some more pics..) but now , although I tend to a little GAS symptomatology;-)), I feel and rationally: see no need for an "upgrade" - especially when I am working with adapted Canon Shift-tilt lenses (on a tripod). I also really don't like the bulkiness of the 2 very slow Fuji TS lenses, where the second (110 mm) has no tripod socket! -how stupid... -. And the new 55 1.7 (ff equiv. 45 mm) is way to near to the beautifully rendering 80 1.7 = 63 mm ff equiv.). What I had wished would be a 1.7 44 mm (35 mm equiv.) as a companion for the 80 mm (or 110 mm). So we have 45 / 50 / 55/ 63 / 80 mm... hmmmm? pps. some points you didn't mention about the better usability could be an additional way to differentiate: 100 % EVF with 9 mil. pixel, more direct control buttons, plus a better sensor technology towards the edges which may "support" faster lenses with more vignetting, and perhaps the newer engine could also contribute to better image results: both to be proven

A well thought out and rational assessment Laz. I think the best camera is very subjective, and you only know what works and what does not, when you 'drive' them for a while - I sold my 50R and somehow I think the images are 'better' than the 100s, just more contrast and punch I think without having to edit them. You have a new subscriber.

A lot of people do say there is something magical about the 50R sensor. I personally haven't used it so I don't have any firsthand experience to compare the 2. I will say this - There is something special about the files from the new 100 II. I used the 100s as my main camera for over a year and there is something different about the way the new gfx renders files that makes me really love using it even more. And don't even get me started on the video. My god, it's amazing

Great Video First time I found You. My question is have you compared if the AF response of the 80 1.7 and new 55 1.7 has improved with the 100ll vs my 100S. During wedding photography I would be scared to use my 80 and rely my 45 2.8 and 110 2.0 because of it's erratic AF(esp AF-C and sometimes AF-S and sometimes eye recognition). Thanks

I’ve never shot with the 80mm 1.7 but based on the difference in speed even with the 45-100 I’d say there would be some kind of improvement for sure

Hello, I have a question for you: you said you have (or had) the R5 too and obviously you noticed some differences on color and image quality. I do not shoot fashion, I do mostly wildlife (for which I use the R6 mk2) and landscape for which I use the R5. Would you suggest to stick on the R5 (and maybe wait the new R5 mk2) or buy the new GFX 100 mk2 or buy a used 100S ? thanks
@lazsmith
@lazsmith 9 ай бұрын
Hmmm that’s a tough one. I can really only give you a more fashion specific view which I’m guessing would be very different to landscape. If you wanted to replace both your cameras I’d definitely suggest the gfx 100 ii but don’t expect the autofocus to be as quick for animals as your r6. For landscapes, the 100s would absolutely beat the r5 any day of the week for colours, tonality, dynamic range. It’s a totally different ball game

I was hoping to find something on the difference in the viewfinder resolution. That will save me a trip to BNH New York . I can’t see how you could use the Fuji for serious video footage, as it only uses the full width of the sensor in 4K and for 4K only need 25 megapixels, so therefore it must be binning 75% of the pixels. Dreadful shame really. If you know anything about the viewfinder resolution, please let me know Thanks.

I am new to Fujifilm; never used one of their tools before, but I really want this camera. Yes, I fall into the first category. Hahahahaha ha! I only recently bought my Hasselblad 503cx in mint condition, but I do want something to help with scanning film, the odd video and animal / wildlife capture. And instead of getting 2 systems, say a Sony along with the Hasselblad X2D for image quality, I can just get this new Fujifilm with that 110mm tiltshift lens.

Hey Laz, Please test it with one of those new tiltshift lenses (if possible). All the videos so far, only have people holding the camera, standing still and talking; not showing the real movements of the lens, or the mechanics of the build. This is my interest. And oh, I just realised that you are only the single channel, who's done an unboxing of the camera and new 55mm. At least, I know what will come in the box, when I buy mine. Thanks

In the vain hope that someone from Fuji might read this forum….. Why-O-Why did you think moving the remote release port “back” to the left side of the camera was a good idea? Don’t you realize the GREAT thing you did with the GFX 100, and the X-H cameras by putting it on the right side? Was that an accident? Still photographers, especially those doing serious landscape and other tripod mounted work, often use Arca Swiss compatible “L-Plates” that go across the bottom of the camera an up the left side so that the camera may be oriented either horizontally in clamp, or vertically. The left side of such plates blocks the port hatch, making access to the remote port impossible. Stupid stupid stupid. And, by the way, if one does use the left side port for remote release, the whole hatch has to be open, exposing the other connections to the elements completely unnecessarily. PLEASE if it is possible via firmware update, make the right side headphone port assignable for remote release.

If photography is your core business then dropping $12500 on a piece of equipment like the gfx ii can be justified. If this is your part time business or your a hobbyist then you can really enjoy creating using a gfx50. Personally I own 3 x gfx 50 bodies because suffer from GAS 😆, but I will be selling two of them to buy an ex demo gfx100 for 5k which will suit me fine and still have enough money for a coffee. Your comment is spot on at the end, the gfx system what ever your budget allows will get your creative juices flowing? That’s what I love about fujifilm… it allows me to slow down and create

@@lazsmith Yes. In my opinion, it's the #1 reason some are on the fence about upgrading: the quest for the works-in-the-real-world hybrid camera. I would also suggest adding to your test list the "Touch screen to refocus during Recording" option. Some of us have PL glass to shoot video as we use a follow focus so a usable video AF would be great. Not expecting brilliance there, just usable. (I would also argue that if one is gonna shoot with the 55mm f/1.7, 22% faster AF from 100 II WOULD be a selling point even in the studio.)
