Short review of what's different between my Fujifilm GFX100 S and the new GFX 100 II [photography use only]. Is the 100 II a good update for older GFX models. Is the sensor better than the 100S and what about the new EVF.
As part of my testing of the Fujifilm 30mm tilt/shift lens [reviews on the way!] I also had a GFX 100 II and 55mm F1.7 lens here to look at. A qualitative review of differences [excluding video] from the POV of the sorts of photography I do.
Yes, the EVF is better, but from an image quality POV I can't see obvious differences between images from the two cameras.

Got both and far prefer the GFX100 ii …… better handling, more robust build, better button placement, far better EVF making assessment of focus more accurate, better tiltable screen. Tilt adapter makes EVF use far more flexible. Tripod bush attachment far more robust than the flimsy arrangement on the 100s (a minor jolt stripped the internal attachment threads on mine and needed the whole back plate it is fixed to replaced). IBIS improvement is marginal with most lenses and image quality/dynamic range if any different is imperceptible. Traded in the older and more battered of my 2 100s bodies (a long story why I ended up with 2….) before it lost too much value or gave up the ghost. If I had the choice as a new Fuji user I would pay the extra for the 100 ii over the 100s …… but as an upgrade from a recently bought 100s I wouldn’t bother. All are great cameras but you have to be aware of the drawbacks of going to high mpx MF from 35mm as well as the advantages. It’s not for everyone and technique is far more critical in getting best quality images.

Yes, I can see for some users the handling of the 100 ii would indeed be better - I use a custom L bracket for the 100S so the baseplate is not an issue. A good point though. I was also careful here to emphasise my own usage - I find too many camera reviews where they seem to assume that every photographer would end up with the same requirements 'if they were good enough' ;-) :-) One more reason for me to generally avoid camera reviewing... Very true about knowing what you are doing - I can think of many sorts of photography where I'd have been far better going from my 5Ds to an R5, but it wasn't for me. These are expensive cameras too - I'm sure a non-trivial proportion of purchasers fall into the more money than sense category. That said these are people with enough spare cash, they'll happily pay for 1-2-1 teaching with their new GF 30MM TS :-)

I bought the GFX 100S earlier this year, and love it, but I'm still getting used to everything it can do. As I do mostly landscape, and don't do video, I'm definitely not going to upgrade. I'm not sure what _would_ make me consider an upgrade. More than 100MP? Can't see needing it. Faster? _I_ don't need it (and have other, faster cameras if I do). Better viewfinder? Probably won't miss it. I am lusting after that TS lens, though!

Similar here - I'm finishing up the main [written] TS review and it's an impressive lens... For myself the only missing element is the lack of offset distortion/vignetting correction in ACR and DxO PL - C1 shows it can be done, I just don't want to have to use C1 [marginally less than I want to ever use LR]

Thank you for comparison between the two beasts, I stick for now with GFX50sII , knowing that is an old sensor but still for my architecture, cityscapes, landscapes is more than enough. Obviously the latest is appealing but I don’t live with photography and for a merely hobby is too expensive. Cheers 🍻

Always fun to get new kit, but if the camera has better ergonomics - now that gets my attention. For my use case I need really fast auto focus, pretty much anything else comes in 2nd at the most. Right now, my kit does the job - so as long as I don't wear something out or break it - or win the lottery.... I'm set. But for a 2nd brand to add the Fuji line has a lot to offer.
@KeithCooper

The ergonomics of cameras is something I generally steer away from [the subject was part of my earlier research career] so it's just an impression ;-) If fast AF is important, then the GFX range hardly seems a first choice? Given how rarely I use AF in much of my work, a very different usage scenario :-)

Thank you and well put. In the USA right now the 100S can be had NEW for US$4400 and the GFX 100II is $7500. Agree upgrade when a new sensor comes out since right now 100MP is the same 100MP for both 100MP cameras. For the difference in price one can get a very nice GF lens or two for my landscape photography. Trying to ascertain if the T/S 30 would be worth the money for landscape.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 ай бұрын
Thanks! 'Worth the money' is a very subjective term ;-) Yes, an excellent lens - the TS-E24 has long been one of my [35mm] favourites, and the 30mm TS matches its FOV and is of superb quality.

Marvelous take for anyone making a huge choice and investment. I always enjoy your pragmatism and depth of understanding on photography, especially TS lenses. I do aerial photography, and image quality is paramount for me. Having lenses that are sharp to the corners are equally important. AF from an aerial heights can be a hit or miss even on a DSLR or mirrorless camera. I suspect I’m going to resort to MF for either the GFX 100S or 100 II as 35mm sensor cameras can be challenged on many occasions with atmospheric haze and lower contrast images from afar.

Another great, and very interesting video Keith. Your output is always entertaining. I like your overall viewpoint often mentioned 'This or that feature/detail/new kit isn't of use or interest to me in what I do but if it is to you, well knock yourself out, go for it- but I don't get any mileage from it'. In a comment to your recent video about print pricing formulas- 'It should be 3x your costs' to which you put forward your own different viewpoint. My comment was in fact a missed opertunity, it should have been a question. Where is the market for prints. Is there a viable market for prints at all? With a lot of other youtube contributors seeming to advise us 'You really should print your work, it won't make you much money but it will improve your photography ' So as someone who reviews lots of printers, offers courses on printing, prints a percentage of his own work and sells some display prints for clients office space. I would not be the least surprised if your youtube reviews don't make more turnover than actual prints sales do, so you are better placed than most to say Who is doing all the printing and do they make any money?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for that - glad it was of interest. I looked at print sales back when I first set up the business, almost 20 years ago and decided where and where not I might be able to make a profit. Quite a bit of our print work would best be put into our 'marketing' category ;-) Thanks for asking - I'll have a think for a video!

I have been enjoying using the 100S and the pictures it produces. I thought I’d have more trouble adjusting to an electronic viewfinder, but I’ve had no problems with that one. I realize that there are advantages and disadvantages to bothe types. But if I needed a clearer view, I don’t think I’d buy a camera with more viewfinder pixels just for that. I’d use my DSLR more. And for manual focusing, I use the back screen mostly, whether on the 100S or the DSLR. I find that my Canon lenses work great on the 100s with the Fringer adaptor and give me a lot more pixels, even when there is some vignetting that I crop out. So I don’t use the DSLR as much as I thought I might still do.

My 5Ds still get used for some technical work, where the 50MP on a 36x24 sensor just works, and the tethering of it is so much better than my GFX100S - which then again, was never bought for studio work ;-)

I have currently got my eye on the used market in the coming months for the 100 original or the 100s! The original maybe more durable and I heard a few photographers have had shutter issues with the 100s needing repairs. I am a bit annoyed I missed the Fuji cash-back deals last year on Black Friday…50s2 and the kit lens was $4000 AUD / $2600 USD sure 50mp would also suit my needs, just wanting that sweet GFX dynamic range compared to the Canon, to hopefully not bracket in most situations..or only bracket an under and not an over as well.….Will also keep my x2 5dsRs (possibly sell 1 if I like the GFX workflow). Picked up a cheap Cambo CA-GFX to host my Canon TS-E lenses in the meantime in preperation.

1. hasselblad or fuji? is one question. 2. comparing the 100 II to the 100S is missing the point of the 100 II. the 100 II is a battery grip less successor to the original 100. in the not distant future i expect a Successor to the 100S (100S II). from this i look at it as an updated version of the more expensive original 100. i didnt buy the S but i am considering this one. Eye AF makes life easy.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 5 ай бұрын
Yes - I do happily note the limitations of any such comparison - it's why I don't do 'camera reviews' very often or in anywhere near the detail I approach printers... Given that I rarely photograph people in my work, AF is still uncommon for me yet alone animal or eye focus. However, when Fuji say they would like to lend me some kit... it would be rude not to :-) As to H vs F depends entirely on what you do - I've looked at bot X1D models and whilst I love the ergonomics, the GFX and lens options were simply of much more use. Of more interest to me was the testing of the HTS adapter with H6D I did...

@@KeithCooper yeah you got a point. usecase and lenses in their lineup. i am wondering if the colors of Hasselblad is so much better than the Fuji or if this is just marketing. Usecase is non moving objects and portraits for print which brings me to the question, do you see an update of the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 in the near future ? the 1000 has been around for a long time now.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 5 ай бұрын
The files from the X1D [mk 1 and 2] looked good, but in my work I couldn't see any significant difference - however, my use of their Phocus software was 'basic' at best. As to the PRO-1000 - Near future? Unlikely I think The new PRO-x600 printers announcement recently, with new inks, does somewhat increase the likelihood of a PRO-1000 update later this year though [I have a video about this subject recently posted]...

Sony do have a new 150 megapixels sensor, but they are holding it back, my guess is that there is no processors fast enough yet to keep up with higher resolution, too many today demands AF speed and video, which I do not.

Will the Nikon pc-e lenses cover this large sensor?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 6 ай бұрын
The 19 will, but the 24/45/85 are all older designs which will struggle at significant shift The biggest problem is the narrow throat diameter of the F mount which results in vignetting effects. This is not related to image circle and 'coverage'. This is one reason the Canon EF mount tilt/shift lenses perform better, but not perfectly on G mount. In their tilt/shift lens ranges, both Canon and Nikon have been very slow to exploit the advantages of the RF and especially the Z mount.

Hi, I bought an old new stock Fuji GFX100 (first generation) a month ago and sold all my Sony gears (Alpha 7RV and 7 lenses) for a single 45-100 zoom + 80mm f1.7. I will never go back. For me the difference is huge BUT I checked with the people around me and many are not able to see that difference ! That's a fact ! nothing wrong with that so it had been very easy for me to sell my Sony gears (in perfect, like new state). Just to be clear, I'm mostly making big prints (last sold one was 90x150cm) and for people only viewing pictures on screen a smartphone is enough !
