This is hands down the best instructional video available for the XT3. No fluf or over produced ego tripping, just packed full of good clear precise information. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much. Excellent work and I agree with the other comments, Fuji should employ you to make there instructional videos :)

Always a pleasure to see your avatar in the comments, and as always I appreciate the kind words. Let me think about that as a concept - and thanks for the suggestion. There is an e-book version of the X-T2 settings that I published with FujiLove magazine.

Never judge a book by its cover!!! Mr. Heilbron, let me begin by saying that I did judge the first few seconds of your video (mainly the lighting) so much that I almost didn’t continue watching, and that would have been VERY UNFORTUNATE, because this is by far one of the MOST EDUCATIONAL and KNOWLEDGEABLE videos I’ve ever watched, not just about the X-T3 but also about video and first steps into a more advanced path with color grading and such. Please forgive me for misjudging your video and accept my gratitude. A few highlights: - i watched dozens of videos about the X-T3 and they all say “you can’t lock your exposure settings in video mode in case you have to switch to stills for a couple of shots” You showed otherwise! Very important feature specially for someone like myself that have to do that in the middle of shooting. Your explanation of focus peaking and zebra was priceless. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I was sad at the end of your video for 2 reasons: 1- i wish it never ended. And 2 - there are more people like myself out there and you only have 35k Views and 78k subscribers meanwhile a bunch of “know NOTHING” out there are breaking the 1 mil subscribers. I am just a huge fan of yours now and just too passionate about your video!!! Thank you

This is honestly the most concise video of this nature that I have seen, and as questions pop up in my mind you dismiss them in the next moment. I don't have the camera yet but am considering switching, and I'm watching every video I can to make sure I don't make a mistake as I really do love my Nikon d750. Your clip has been incredibly insightful on all the most valuable video aspects - specifically the ease of use for focus assistance and the 48 shutter settings. These are things very few other people cover, they are all just stuck on the film simulations...which are great...but I needed more than that. Honestly remarkable. Humblest Thanks.

Fuji I LOVE your flip SCREEN concept! They have in my opinion the best flip screen arrangement on the marked. Makes high/low photo a breeze compared to the Panny/Oly/Canon idea where you have to flip it all the way out before rotating etc which makes you miss the moment. 100% cudos to Fuji here. This vlogging-thingy is just for a few users compared to the large amount of photographers out there.

Great show, Maarten. You hit on all the salient points when it comes to shooting video with the XT-3 and video in general, some of which I had to learn the hard way (such as how to get to exposure settings that fall between the manual dial settings, for example). This video is a true crash course and will accomplish exactly what you intended it to do - get someone who is unfamiliar with the camera up and running quickly.

Quite frankly this is the best video pertaining to the Fuji X-T3 on KZfaq. Wishing now that I had a similar video for the Sony PXW-FS7 the first time I rented one. Thank you so much for this - it released a tremendous amount of stress - I am buying the camera tomorrow for documentary filmmaking and the occasional sojourn into stills photography. If this has already been addressed elsewhere online i am not sure, but with respect to overheating issues (if you don't mind), I have a two-part question: i) When recording with an Atomos externally, is there a substantial reduction in the risk of overheating? ii) Does anyone have any controlled data on overheating times on the Fuji X-T3 while using an external recorder at various settings, so as to be safe?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks. I would not be overly worried about overheating for the X-T3, unless you are recording in a hot environment (and in that case, any camera will be challenged). There is a reduction in the risk, but again, with high external temperatures this risk is not eliminated. I have not seen these kinds of controlled tests, and as each situation is different, they can't really be applied to real world. I can't find any reports of videographers complaining about overheating. If I were you I'd put these issues to rest.

When you say that it will only shoot in 1080p with the remote app- do you mean the camera will only record in that, or that the phone will only show 1080p but the camera will still record 4K if set? Thanks again for these video tutorials. I keep a playlist of your XT3 VIDEOS & a plethora of others as well. Extremely knowledgeable, Maarten.

Thanks, I do appreciate your kind words. The camera will only record 1080 when using the remote app. The camera settings are over-ruled, there are no settings in the app. This is actually an improvement, other Fujifilm models only record 720 using the remote.

Recommending external recorders to improve image quality is WAY to easily done for a camera like this! With 10-bit 4.2.0 and a high H265 bitrate in-camera you already get excellent results. The Atomos really isn't going to give you any improvement at all for 99.9% of your shots. Contrary to popular belief the 4.2.2 vs 4.2.0. doesn't mean you can have more extreme color adjustments in post or better contrast. It only gives you a little bit more color detail, but that just means the transition from one color to another is a little bit more precise. Think for example of green screen work. There you want the most precise transition from your subject to the green color around him or her and 4.2.2 will make that specific use case a little bit better. Back in the day when camera's recorded in standard definition or 720p the difference was more visible because of low resolution to begin with, but with modern camera's doing 4K or even higher it's becoming less and less of an issue. So unless you need the highest quality green screen work, 4.2.2 isn't going to give you anything at all over 4.2.0. The Fuji already has 10-bit internal, so there the Atomos improves nothing. But just to be complete: The bit depth (8-bit vs 10 bit) is the primary thing that matters when grading F-log. 8-bit recordings may create banding when adding back contrast to the flat F-log image, but only in specific situations. Think for example of small gradients like blue skies. Record any other scene in 8-bit F-log and you'll be hard pressed to spot the difference with the 10-bit. With normal contrast recording presets like Eterna (that don't need a lot of contrast adjustments anyway) 10-bit gains you nothing at all. Same goes for color correcting. 10-bit doesn't mean you can more easily color correct that grass into a more extreme green. There are other reasons to use the Atomos, like a good screen and unlimited recording and an easy to edit codec without the need for proxies or transcoding. But image quality? No, not really. Not for this camera.

Thanks Maarten, I enjoyed the fast pace that your video provided. I'm am experienced stills shooter wanting to do more video so I was able to keep up with your settings instantly. It's interesting that many reviewers of the X-T3 rave about the video capabilities (quite rightly) but give us the impression that we should be shooting this camera at warp speed, but in the real world these are not necessarily the best settings for many of us, even the pros. I have spent hours researching gimbals for the X-T3 Fuji cameras and am keen on the Moza Air 2 but the weight of this gimbal negates the reasons why I switched to mirrorless? For the moment I am not going to use an external recorder so require the X-T3 screen free of motor mechanisms. I would appreciate your input on this? Yes of course I subscribed. :)

Thanks for the kind words, and your subscription, appreciated. I agree, if you're producing for youtube or other online distribution, the X-T3's high end settings are more than what's needed (and fill up memory cards super fast!) I'm not sure what your question might be ... what is "screen free of motor mechanisms"? The Moza Air (or the Ronin-S, which I would recommend) are indeed heavier devices, but they provide functionality that no stills/video hybrid can match. If that's what you need, it's much, much lighter than the steadicam rigs that they replace.

Hello, congratulations for your videos I love them. I have a question, how long have you been recording when the warming logo appeared? Does it heat up as much as the sonys when recording? Thank you.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I wasn't making notes, and don't now remember if it was time or temperature that I felt was the cause - however, the camera did not overheat to the point of shutting down. No, Sony's problem (particularly on the APS-C sized cameras) is worse, where I have had multiple occasions when the camera turned itself off, even after the Auto Pwr OFF temp setting was added.

Great in-depth videos. Honestly I would say these are my favourite on KZfaq! Quick question. In 'Movie Silent Control' mode, can the list of options (ISO, shutter speed, etc.) be navigated with the arrow buttons/AF joystick? Or are you restricted to using the touchscreen to swipe through these options?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. That is an excellent point I should have made or demonstrated - yes, you can use the joystick to navigate, but you must use touch to access the menu. While the mode (in and out of silent) can be set to a function key, activating the menu cannot (as far as I can tell anyway).
@RobTheCarSpotter
@RobTheCarSpotter 5 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for that. Well as long as I can use the joystick to navigate the options that sounds good to me, since I always prefer to use manual controls rather than touchscreen gestures. Looking forward to getting my X-T3 in a few weeks time as a replacement for my Canon 80D!
