There have been lots of talk about the new Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm Australia has lent me this X-T3 so I can try it out. I’m not going to go through all the specs, there are plenty of videos about that. Instead, I'm going to take the camera out on location and share my thoughts on what it’s like using the camera for landscape photography.
Fujifilm X-T3 (Black)
(World) - amzn.to/2NFRHYP
(AU) - camerapro.idev...
Fujifilm X-T3 (Silver)
(World) - amzn.to/2XvnQqt
(AU) - camerapro.idev...
As most of you know I have the previous camera to this, the X-T2 - and I love shooting that camera. For me, photography is as much about the experience of capturing an image as it is about the image itself, that's why I enjoy shooting with the X-T2. It’s compact and light, it's external dials provide an intuitive design for adjusting camera settings.
Fujifilm has taken all that is good about the X-T2 and made a host of improvements for the X-T3. Some improvements are subtle - like the tapered dials, slightly raised buttons to make them easier to use and they've increased the size of the information displayed on the back screen. Other improvements are more significant like 26Mpx APS-C cropped sensor (up from 24Mpx), it's a BSI Sensor for better low light performance. Fourth generation processor - better Auto Focus, quicker operation, this translates to the camera feeling more responsive. With the upgrade in hardware, Fujifilm has ramped up the video capabilities. We get 4k up to 60fps, and 1080p up to 120fps. What's really impressive is the quality of that video, up to 10 bit 4.2.2, amazing for this price point.
As far as the body is concerned, it's very similar to the X-T2, they’ve improved the build quality from the X-T2 along with its weather sealing, which is nice to have given the wet conditions I sometimes shoot in. The size and weight coupled with its performance and image quality has so many advantages. Perfect for landscape photographers that hiking to their locations, ideal for photographers who like to combine landscape and travel photography, an outstanding option for street photographers, in fact, any photographer who wants to create beautiful images and prefers to carry lighter gear.

@@Andrew_marr I did a studio portrait shoot earlier this week and the images are just WOW. The dynamic range & colours of the X-T3's sensor is just fantastic! I used the 16-55, 50-140 & 80mm macro lens and the results are just so sharpe, the Eye/Face detect really works.

Great review. I primarily shoot a GFX 50S. I was using an A6300 for walk-around and backpacking duty. I decided to sell all of my remaining Sony gear and go all in Fujifilm. I bought the X-T3 and 3 lenses. The camera is spectacular and the Fujinon XF lenses are sublime. I have not done a lot of landscape work with the X-T3 yet but what I have done has turned out beautifully. Much better than the Sony gear. Over Thanksgiving I shot a bunch of indoor pictures handheld with the 10-24 lens. I turned the camera to Auto ISO and enabled Image Stabilization. The pictures came out tripod sharp. The images show almost no noise, despite shooting at ISO 3200. Amazing. I've only seen such low light/high ISO performance from the GFX up to now. I cannot recommend the XT-3 highly enough. It's a wonderful camera. A perfect companion to the superb GFX. The XF lenses are beautiful. Thanks for all your work Andrew. Great stuff!

I share in your enthusiasm. I just defected to this from Canon and I have zero regrets. Everything feels premium. To get out of Canon what I get with my X-T3, I would have to spend at least twice as much and even then, I don't think Canon can match the features on the X-T3

I tried this camera out a few weeks ago and liked it, except for a couple of things. Unless you use a tripod, no IBIS is kind of a big deal. The Fuji glass is so sharp that it's very difficult not to induce a bit of shake no matter how rock solid you are. My other issue with Fuji in general is the terrible battery life. I was out shooting (with my X-Pro-2) with a friend who uses the Sony a7III and the new Z battery. After a full day he had barely used 30% of its capacity, but I was on my third battery. That's pretty bad and something they really need to address ASAP.

Very good and clear review - and outstanding images. Being a landscape photographer (hobbyist) I moved up from the X-T2 to the X-T3 for the ergonomic reasons - things like the new LCD switch (very hard to do the old one w/ an L-bracket on) and knob changes you mentioned (I, in particular, like the firmer front and back dials), but also for things like moving the cable release port over to the right (better for L-brackets), and the autofocus (as you mentioned), and a few other small things. Given that the image quality on the X-T2 was so excellent to begin with I figured it would be hard to exceed, and for sure I've noticed that there really isn't much in terms of the difference in images I have taken so far (the extra couple of megapixels make a small impact in terms of crop - but, well, I like to get it as close as possible in the field, so haven't found much use for that). The touch LCD is proving more and more useful out in the field as well. In general, I have found the X-T2 and (now) the X-T3 just so easy to use in the field - the knobs are great, and having the mirrorless EVF and LCD make exposure settings very easy. The weight/size reduction is also important - although, it is kind of strange that my ballhead weighs more than the camera... ;-)

I did not read through all the comments, but to address one of your concerns about switching to High Speed Recording see below. Setup (Wrench) > Button/Dial Setting > Function (Fn) Setting > Choose Function 3-6 (The D Pad) and assign one button to be a shortcut to switch to High Speed Filming. (Do make sure that you are in video mode when assigning shortcuts or the High Speed Shortcut will not be available if your dial is in picture mode) I do agree I wish the X-T3 had IBIS and the screen was fully articulating, that would make it the perfect camera for me. I still love it though.

I really enjoyed your video - great images, calm informative info. I tried out the Fuji XT3 and really liked it, especially the ability to change parameters without using a menu. I was using a Sony a6000 until recently. I am still on the fence as I would love some IBIS, longer battery life, and a lot of the industry seems to be going to FF (but apparently not Fuji), and I do a lot of interior low-light shooting (concerts etc). I checked out the Sony A7 III and it is familiar because of my a6000 use, but I just don't love it, and it's more expensive and the lenses will make it quite a bit more bulky. I could wait and see what comes out but I am now without a camera as my a6000 was stolen (along with the lenses).

This looks like a great camera. I know Fuji has medium format cameras but can you imagine if they made this in a full frame with a 45 to 50 megapixel sensor? It would destroy Canon and Nikon sales of their new mirrorless cameras. The XT3 is probably taking sales away from them already. I'm not familiar with Fuji and their specs but I wonder what they would have to change in their lenses to make a full frame. One thing I've noticed, Canon and Nikon seem to leave things out of some of their new cameras because they don't want to kill the sales of previous models. It doesn't seem like Fiji does that. When they come out with new cameras they put as much into it as possible.
@Loopsrainforest
@Loopsrainforest 5 жыл бұрын
Fuji is a fairly small company with limited factory space & resources compared to other imaging companies. Unfortunately the current X lenses wouldn't cover the image circle needed for a FF sensor & Fujifilm stated that stepping into the full frame market would be suicide in an overcrowded market. The medium format GFX is their answer for landscape & studio photographers needing the maximum quality. I highly recommend you don't try the GFX as thats all I think about since I borrowed one last year.

I’ll use it for my pro work until the Fuji proves itself reliable but I picked up an xt3 this week. Need to get all my lenses back tho now. Honestly look at the xt2 too tho. Look at the differences and see if you need the upgrade as the t2 is a bargain used and for stills no less a camera that the xt3. Other than focusing.

Fuji is making it very difficult for me not to consider them over Sony whenever I make the jump to mirrorless. My only concern is that I do shoot some wildlife and sports and I'm not sure the XT-3 (or the future XH-2 for that matter) necessarily suit those needs. But, I'm not going to dismiss it, so I'm going to wait and see what Fuji come's up with.

As always great review Andrew. I'll probably wait till next year before upgrade to the 3 or wait till the X-H2. I have now sold all my Nikon gear as it was sitting in the office doing nothing! The gap is closing between APS-C and FF (as you say) although FF users are defending it to the hilt which is understandable. The current Nikon and Canon FF DSLR's and new mirrorless are ridiculously over priced for the technology when you consider they are almost at the price point of Medium format its just pure daft (Scottish). I notice a lot of wedding photographers over here are changing to Fuji due to the price point and quality and its easier to replace camera bodies at under £2000 compared to what it costs for FF dslr. Its the full frame enthusiasts that are keeping the price point so high. Interesting times!

If you want to use the XT3 for video, then definitely get the XT3, but for landscape photography, perhaps consider the GFX50R, as a lot of the improvements of the XT3 are not vital for landscape work and you would really benefit from medium format :) Great video too...

Hi Andrew, thanks for the cool video and a nice walk through of the X-T3. A couple of things that made me distrust your content is that you say you are not going to go over the camera specs but proceed to spend most of the time talking about the specs. Also, you mentioned that "if the X-T3 is not in the shot, it was filmed with the X-T3" but you have a few aerial scenes that I'm pretty sure were not done with X-T3. Could you clarify that comment? Hi! Great video and photos, really stunning! I have watched almost all XT3 reviews on youtube by now and this complain about the screen continues to pop up. I understand that a vlogger might prefer a fully articulated screen, but the screen of the XT3 is for me the best screen for instagrammer, and I assume there are more people out there taking photos for instagram than there are vloggers. The fact that the screen tilts on the side makes it perfect for portrait photos. Cheers, P.

I did it Andrew, i bought the XT3. I have very good experiences with a heavy DSLR from a major brand but after i hiked in the lake district UK two weeks ago i thought i need a lighter gear. I shot my first images with it in Rotterdam The Netherlands yesterday evening (in the dark) and they look promising. I still have to edit them and see them on the big display though. I took all images in both camera's so i will be able to judge the XT3 very well. It is the huge loss of weight for the body and especially the lenses that made me do this purchase. Thanks for this video.👏

very good review, I like the xt3 and would love to replace my a6000 (as a city "walk-around" camera) with it. My main digital is a Nikon D800e. What I probably will do however, is to seriously look at the release of the GFX 100S? Or, go with a used (if I can find it GFX 50S). The medium format images just really kick it up a notch. I am getting very old now, so why not get the best (relatively affordable) for my remaining time?

Steve H.: Steve that is my sentiment also. I have cropped sensor cameras and am looking at a significant upgrade in image quality. The Fujifilm medium format cameras make good sense to me and justify bypassing 'full-frame'.

Re: your comment about when "you go back to the XT2 that you really notice the difference ". I'm a stills shooter and was all set to get the XT3 till these latest XT2 deals arrived. I'm aware of the much enhanced video capabilities of the XT3 > XT2 but could you possibly go into more detail about the other differences you mentioned going from XT3 to XT2 and whether that difference is worth the price difference . ( currently in US paired with the 18-55 mm kit $1699 vs $ 1099) . Thanks for any help.....trying to future proof this decision as being a hobbyist I'm unlikely going to be switching camera brands all the time

Welcome and thanks for the sub! The X-T3 is a great camera, I still have mine, I've resisted the temptation to upgrade to the X-T4 for now. I use the 100mm LEE Filter system, because I get the most amount of flexibility. I am really impressed by the Fuji XT3 after watching countless reviews, some flattering and some critical. However, I find a serious deficiency in the XT3, which is the lack of in camera 5 axis stabilisation. If they launch an XT4 ( or whatever they choose to call it ) with this one feature added, that would be my camera. And for many other photographers, if I may take liberty of speaking for them. And I think this is as serious as not providing a second card slot for the Nikon z6/ z7.

Nice work Andrew. I am age wise a rather advanced senior photographer who is contemplating the purchase of another digital camera. To be honest I had leaned towards a full frame mirrorless camera, but believe that since I produce mid- sized prints that this Fujifilm X-T3 might well fit the requirements. Might you provide additional details about the Lee system that you illustrated?

I'm very torn between the XT-3 and the Panasonic G9. I'm afraid that the battery life on the XT-3 will annoy me. The G9 seems to be such a well rounded package. How big is the image quality difference between the two? I don't know. Is it still worth investing into the MFT system. Man, tough (first world problem) choices

Very nicely presented vlog! And truly stunning images. Although I am a full frame shooter, I would like to switch to APS-C setup just to keep my kit a bit lighter & smaller. My only concern is about low light conditions, which I frequently come across while travelling. Can you or anyone having good experience with both the systems, on low light performance, please share your thoughts on that point? Again thanks for sharing your views on XT-3 and may God bless you for your future endeavours!

I slowly switched over from a 5dii with trinity zooms to Fuji & the lenses just blew me away with the insane quality. The lack of an anti aliasing filter & X-trans sensor is giving me sharper photo's than with my FF Canon setup. Low light is acceptable & ISO is usable up to 6400 but obviously not as good as the D850 or 5div. The only issues I had switching over is that Lightroom is horrible at rendering RAW files & I had to switch to Capture one.

Another great video! Would you swap out your Nikon full frame for this one? Does Lee make the proper adapter rings for the lenses?
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 5 жыл бұрын
I choose to take my Nikon on some trips, so I'm not looking to switch. The advantage with the Lee Filter system that I use (the 100 system), all I need is an adapter ring for the 72mm thread and the mount attaches perfectly. There is a smaller mount that LEE Filter does that works for many of the smaller fuji lenses,, but I prefer the 100 system but I don;t get vingetting when using the 10-24mm.

Alistair McNaughton You can get some amazing deals on the x-t2 at the moment. Almost half the price inc. cash back here in the UK. I was initially planning on purchasing the x-t3, but I’ve decided to go for its predecessor and spend the spare cash on a lens (XF 16mm, which is incredible). If you’re primarily a stills shooter, then for stills, the AF improvements aren’t all that significant from what I’ve seen. Maybe in C-AF? If you’re shooting video, the x-t3 is a step up.

Hello, what is your experience, if any, with shooting landscapes on Fuji X-T3 while using the lowest native ISO 160 compared to the lowest extended ISO 80? I'm wondering whether to switch to Fuji from FF Canon and the lack of a native ISO 100 is a bit of a concern. Thank you.
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 5 жыл бұрын
I honestly think the images at ISO 160 are incredible. The X-T2 had a base ISO of 200, Fujifilm has improved that with a base of 160 in the X-T3. Using ISO 80 on the X-T3 will limit the dynamic range slightly, but still proved a clean image. I believe that you can't directly compare values of the base ISO between cameras, i.e. just becasue the X-T3 doesn't have a base ISO of 100 doesn't mean the images shot at ISO 160 will be less quality that images taken with a Canon at ISO 100. Plus there are other facts like the X-T3 doesn't have an AA filter, so the quality of the image increases just from that.
