Full Bag Tutorial: Zip Away Tote from by George - Folding and Collapsable Tote Bag!

Today we have the Zip Away Tote from by George! This is a fantastic bag pattern that sews up pretty quickly and isn't too difficult. The tote folds up into its own little pouch and fits easily in a glovebox, center console, or even in your larger bag for use at a grocery store or any time you might want a separate tote bag.
In this tutorial we're using a small hack (shown in the pattern) that uses normal #5 zipper tape, bypassing the need for a pre-made separating zipper or a zipper box and pin kit.

Thank you for the kind words :D Depending on materials used, I’d sell these started at 22-25 and up. I live in the middle of the country and it can be hard to sell higher priced items for me just due to our low cost of living here. I have no doubt that some of our coastal friends could get quite a bit more for these, especially when you start customizing them with fancy fabrics and notions that are themed.

Excellent tutorial and fun pattern!! I wasn’t going to buy any more bag patterns… and now I HAVE to break my resolve! BTW…can I ask where to buy the webbing? It looks lightweight. The webbing I have is thicker. Many thanks!

This particular webbing came from amazon. I wouldn’t call it thinner but it’s not so thick, like some we see out there. It’s a nice middle ground. Structured, but not crazy.

Great Tut! I'm confused on the cutting and haven't received an answer from byGeorge. Can you answer a question for me? Did you use the pattern pieces to cut your pieces or did you use the enclosed measurements and use your rotary cutter and ruler? I'm finding the pattern piece doesn't match the cut measurements even with the test square corect.

I honestly can’t remember. I think for the rectangles I just used my rotary cutter. I usually do. I have, on occasion, flipped my rectangle body/liner pieces the wrong way and then they don’t match up. Is it possible you put them length vs width and didn’t realize it? It’s hard to tell because they are close in measurement.

What are dimensions for bottom piece (with curves) and dimensions of the top pieces in this particular bag? (knowing that sizes could be adjusted as desired size of folded bag (. Tx!

You’d need to buy the pattern to get the dimensions of the bag. We don’t publish those because it helps protect the integrity and intellectual property of the designer. If we give actual dimensions, people would then skip buying the pattern and that would undercut the hard work of the pattern designer. Hope that makes sense. You can see the bag in the video for scale and that is why I show it from so many angles :) I’m 5’11” and not very petite so you can see it’s a pretty substantial sized tote but it’s not huge like a beach bag :)

Number 5 zipper tape and corresponding #5 zipper pulls. You can buy the type with metal teeth but I recommend the ones with nylon teeth for this project.
