Bathroom renovation starts today, 1 of 2 bathrooms that i will be doing back to back at this house.
We get it all stripped out and uncover a soil stack that becomes a little tricky to sort out.

This is very helpful stuff. I am a rank amateur DIYer and have been looking for some info about working with soil stack fittings, as I'll need to do so when replacing my bathroom. This is the most useful practical explanation that I've come across. It helps that you're solving a real life problem too, and showing how you work in a confined space. Can I ask what inserts you use for the soil pipe tees to get wastes in? I was on a job the other day to repair a leaking one outside and showed up with a BOSS rubber insert but it was too big (soil pipe tee cut out) so had to mangle the rubber insert with a stanley and a load of silicone to make it fit. I rang around asking for a slightly smaller insert but nobody seemed to know what I was talking about.

Good progress mark with the bathroom, the only thing I would of done different would be to run 2 inch waste from the boss to the basin then tee off in 1 1/4 to the basin then 1 1/2 to the shower and probably fit a MacAlpine aav above the shower in the loft to stop the sink gurgling as I'm never keen on notching joists next to an already notched joist but each to their own. As for the sparks I know you said the ceiling is being over boarded but that's absolute lazyness banging holes in the ceiling like that, it's a mess and would probably take 20 mins in the loft. Anyway looking forward to the finished job 👍

Decent start to the job. As others have said I would of stuck a tee close to tbe stack taken the basin waste into the 1-1/2 & then just the shower waste. On the basin waste fit an antivac trap or self sealing valve. There's no chance a basin waste backing up the shower waste as you've then put the connection close to the stack. No chance of them pulling as you've only got an electric shower as opposed to one off a combi or pumped. I'd be more concerned as to almost little to no fall on the shower waste as electric showers generate so little water they struggle to run away & eventually block especially with knuckle bends . I'd of used a hole saw on the joists & atruggled with a few sockets but peace of mind I'd got a decent fall on it. But hey we all approach things differently . Could you not of got the customer to go for a pumped shower & run both bathrooms off of it to do the showers ? Give them a decent shower as opposed to dancing around an electric shower to get wet. All that graft for an electric shower even if its a 10.8 , you'll be replacing it in about 4 years !! Or converted it to a unvented win win for both bathrooms . Appreciate its extra cost to the punter . But a better shower performance ! Am interested in seeing you cut this pan as I detest back to the wall pans nightmare to connect up. 🤞it goes ok .

Live in Midlands had no water , can't flush or nothing for 6 days now ! Had 5 plumbers out so far basiccly live on top of a takeaway there's 2 flats in on same second floor mine is a one floor flat and my neighbour has an upstairs , basiccly when I flush the chain it starts backing up and then if I run the tap it will back into the toilet and bath ! If my neighbour flushes or runs the taps it backs into my bath also !! First plumber didnt want to touch it and said its a severn trent water issue and they need to clear it from the main sewage they checked and said its clear from there ! We have a main sewage clean out in the back of the takeaway downstairs and the second plumber said it looks clear ! Thrid day a tried plumber came out and noticed because of the back up of water the pipe burst inside the wall and came apart 😳 flooded my whole bathroom and down into the takeaway!! That plumber didn't want to do it as we don't know the layout of the pipe work etc! When the water backed up into the bath we unplugged the pipe which went from the sink outside into a main drain line which leads downstairs to stop water coming in and got it to redirect outside instead ! The whole pipe when we take the sink pipe off is filled to the top of water backup! My landlord said that pipe thats full goes both left and right and has u bends! What would this problem be my neighbour is being very selfish and keeps running the taps etc and it backs into my bath! If we turn taps on or flush more then once same thing will happen pipe will fill and back into my bath and toilet it was so bad it broke the seal around my toilet and water was spraying out ! My landlord got another plumber which he chose to be cheap with to come and repair the pipe which was leaking and he ran my tap literally once and the tap for all but 3 seconds and said it was working so the landlord tried blaming us for taking a small pipe off the back of the sink which backed into the main pipe which has back up in ! If we didn't take that off water would have carried on coming in ! We saved him thousands in damage by doing that and quick thinking I grabbed every single towel bucket and even bed sheets etc to soak up the water ! And we were taking it in turns to empty the bath as it filled! The landlord refuses to turn the water off by mains and the problem still isn't fixed the pipe that came off in the celling thats been repaired but the back up is still there and backs up from my neighbours toilet above mine into my bath and mine does the same ! What could this be is this a soil stack blockage or is it something to do with the pipe that attaches to the back of the bathroom sink because that one is the one connected to the sink and bath and thats the one I took the off and was backed up right down into the celling! Would the soil stack back up into other pipes also? Because I thought it was a main line sewage problem and sevebrn trent would fix it ! But they said no blockage and the man who came to check the main line clean out whixh is inside the takeaway said it was working but he only got the takeaway to run there taps and toilet and we didn't get asked and we are on the 2nd and third floor ! :/ confused!

Wow….. that’s a real mess. Without seeing and testing everything it’s hard to work out what the issue is to be honest…… I would be pestering the landlord to get it sorted as it’s a health issue now with soul pipe water backing up

Just a personal thought question. I believe a 110mm dia. stack or should I say soil vent pipe (that is a pipe that is vent only) can be as narrow as an inch and a quarter. I mean, 110mm is (in my opinion) excessive, also at 110mm there is an uninsulated space in the room. If the vent pipe was less than 110mm, it could be incorporated into the stud wall structure................ Thanks.

That’s the problem , when you have bathrooms, the waste pipe work should be boxed in , you definitely lose a bit of space , the timber joist looks healthy, and it’s on a second floor, he can get away with it, but you definitely don’t do that on a first floor, those are most important joist.
@mrgilly100
