Should you wear a Full Face Helmet For Every Day Trail Riding in 2020
Modern lightweight and breathable helmets can make the decision much easier.
I wanted to revisit this subject to try and help someone who may be wondering about wearing a full face helmet on all or most rides.
I found my TLD D3 helmet to be too hot during the summer to fit the role of trail AND DH helmet, and so I purchased an IXS Trigger FF to see if it could be my go to for the majority of riding I do.

With the latest trail helmets being so lite, would you consider one for the majority of you rides? Or do you already?

Thanks for the video. I wish I'd heard someone make this argument for FF on trails before August 24, 2019. I crashed and broke my jaw and hand that day, on a very tight but tame trail (hard pedal strike on a hidden root) never dreamed of sailing over the bars that fast. Two surgeries to add some nice titanium hardware to my mandible, lots of smoothies and soups for weeks, and many other slow steps to get back to sort-of-normal. Just riding road and gravel now. When the trails dry out here in the PNW, I will be donning a full-face helmet (maybe this IXS trigger ff) for my usual blue and black trails.

We already do. Full face all the time, knee and shin guards all the time, elbow guards all the time. I have two kids that ride with me all the time. I’ve seen them fall flat on their face in a crash. With the guards, gloves, and full face they just get up, dust off and keep riding.

A couple of days ago I had a front wheel wash out on a tame xc trail. Hit the hard dirt face first. The chin bar of my £250 Bell FF helmet split, cutting and bruising my chin, such was the force of the impact. I shudder to think what would have happened had I only been wearing a half shell. I'll never ride without a FF after that. Great video man, people need to stop caring about what others think and put their own safety first.

Agreed! I've had nature reach out and grab me plenty of times dirt biking single track at all kinds of speeds. Starting to get back into mtn biking after a decade and wearing a half dome make me feel super vulnerable. Added to that I run clipless, all it takes is one squirrelly root + one convenient rock to knock your molars out. Besides fashion is a young(er) person's game. I'ld rather not have the downtime.

Sub’d because you make a great case for safety.. Agree on the enduro style full face transition. My son and I went to Snow Summit bike park on Sunday, about 2.5 hours from our home.. After spending the day there using our 1/2 helmets my son and I went out and purchased FF enduro helmets from FOX and TLD.. The added safety makes too much sense.. At 53, I’m not worried about anyone making fun of any safety gear I use to protect myself.. Back in my ATV/off-road days my THOR full face MX helmet did double duty when riding/racing DH in Hawaii and the PNW.

I think full face helmets look better than the half shells, and I don't think you can overdo it on protection either, regardless of what skill level you have. Murphy's Law: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong" Even when there is nothing difficult in front of, maybe you even cruise along a bike lane in your city, but one mistake, one trip, or one factor outside your own personal doing and you could kiss concrete and smash your jaw. Not too long ago I saw a video of a guy doing some simple light jumps, he fucked up, and landed face first in a protruding rock in the ground. Luckily the guy did wear a full face helmet, and the chin guard protected him from a pretty gruesome outcome (he really smashed into it). I think if we can get well ventilated helmets like this or the Endura MT500 Full Face (which I currently consider), then we probably should wear them over a half shell.

the algorithms must have put this video in my feed because it knows I just bought the IXS Trigger FF. Love it... It's now the helmet I use for everything. And your point that sometimes the worst injuries happen on the "easy" trails is absolutely true. Most of my injuries have happened when I'm "screwing around" on an "easy" trail. So I have adopted a new personal policy that I will take the time to put on ALL my pads / protective gear before EVERY ride... even if I think it's gonna be a short / easy ride.

I just got into mountain biking in April of '22. I started with a half shell but found myself craving more speed and intense riding so I decided to get a full face. I bought a Bell Super Air R and that thing breathes and weighs about the same as my half shell, and it's very comfortable. It's not rated for downhill but it is rated for enduro and trail. I just wear it everywhere I ride now as I never intend or plan to crash but I'll have some sort of face protection if/when it does happen. If I get into downhill riding then I'll buy one specifically for that but I do a lot of climbs right now so my Bell gives me the ventilation I need.

Saw like hundreds of crashes on trails... I remember exactly three guys, falling really bad on their faces... So on light trails I don't wear full face. When I want to ride on new trails or tricky trails I take my full face. When you are only downhilling, just full face. When you have an e bike and also want to enjoy some other trails or uphills you don't need an fullface helmet. Also hikers are kind of afraid from badass downhillers with fullface. Just my experience.

What about for climbing? I'm one of those sick guys who enjoys uphills just as much as going down, often for a whole day up in the mountains. So far i've been wearing an XC helmet which is obviously very well ventilated, never had an issue with cooking my head in the summer heats (30°C/86F or even above), but i know that's too little protection for some of the faster, rockier downhills i ride. Athough i never push too hard, i've been riding alone for 20 years and learned to be responsible for myself, better be too cautious than in trouble. Never had a crash on my bike that led to injury, mostly just falling over in the most awkward easy situations :D So for my riding style it would be silly to wear a fullface, yet i know very well that i have to fall only once to wish i had a fullface. We wear helmets for protection, after all. I'm thinking between the Fox Speedframe and the Fox Proframe. (One half shell and one fullface). Do you think i could survive long climbs in that fullface, or that's more for the open face design? Maybe i should buy both and decide what to wear depending on the ride... Still cheaper than liquid food. I know there are some convertible designs, but i'm not fully convinced on them. What is your experience?
@PedalingDave
@PedalingDave 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I'd side with having both helmets and either selecting based on the trail, OR based on how sketchy I felt on a given day. I've never used a convertible helmet but they would be a solid option IMO

That's a good question and one I'm not sure about myself. I kinda lean toward the magnetic being just fine, especially compared to the click lock style of regular half shell helmets. That said the d ring will always be more secure. Thanks for watching!
@mtbboy1993
@mtbboy1993 4 жыл бұрын
@@PedalingDave I hated using half face helmets, double d ring is reason alone for fullface, so annoying having to tighten the strap, I see many kids riding have same issues, they say they come out of adjustment often, so I tell them about the double d ring buckle and show them how it works. I won't go back to click buckles that's for sure, but the magnetic buckle don't have anything securing the strap from slipping. but the double d ring buckle is the strap adjustment securing device.

Even just riding around roads and down step hills probably good idea also , cars are bloody dangerous . Almost been killed so many times . Esp if it's raining . Yeah it would get super hot after a while no doubt , just carry a bladder rofl . Have it poked up into your helmet like a v8 super car driver on long rides . I use to ride to work miles every day , down these massive roads . Lucky I never came off on the hills , was so scary on the way to work each day and going home . A full face would of made me feel so much more safe I think . One time I was going down this hill and it had ice on it , I didn't even know it had ice till I got half way down the hill . When I had to slow down for the corners I had to drift left and right just to stay on . And I was going so fast at the round about and this car pulls out on me and doesn't give way and I'm still sliding and I had to drift around the front of their car rofl . I thought I was going to die .

i'm getting a fatfullsix and getting back to bikes after a lot of years of and i choose to buy a TLD stage because you can even be on foot and fall and brake you jaw, of course the type of ride you have will augment the chance of you getting of your bike but in reality even of a smooth road you could fall and in that case is a dice of luck you will lunch to not brake your face. The TLD stage is light too and not very hot and i prefer getting it and be safe with my face than paying medical bill and time because i wasn't wearing it. I have a friend which is emergency doctor and more than often she have people with half helmet who arrive with face injuries that wasn't even going more than 15km/h. who care what people think or say, they don't have to live with your body when it's damaged !
