The improvisation that Joe Montana had when he played was something I didn't see from anyone else then. He was multifaceted. He didn't have the best arm like Marino, he didn't have the zip that Elway had, he didn't run like Cunningham, but he did it all exceptionally well.

Joe Montana had it harder then any other quarterback. Back in the day there were no rules how to hit a quarterback today if you hit a quarterback the wrong way it’s a flag. If Joe Montana was playing today he would’ve won over 8 Super Bowls. If Joe Montana was in his prime today he would’ve beaten any Quarterback today. God bless you Joe you’re a real warrior he took a Lotta good hits and he came back and won two more Super Bowls

I loved Montana as a kid and love him now as a person...but the QB's back in the 60's 50's and 40's took way worse punishment...so no Montana did not have it harder than other other QB. Montana even ranks Otto Graham and Johnny Unitas as the 2 Greatest because he recognizes the different eras...Montana even said he is not sure if he could've played in their eras.

you're right, Tom Brady doesn't dominate like Joe Montana did, Brady just dominates at a far superior level. Very touching interview none the less. Montana is a legend, but he is no longer the best QB to ever play in the NFL. That title belongs to the kid who idolized him now.

This interview is great. First of all...Joe just said that the Dwight Clark "Catch" was a play that they practiced many times. This should end the 40+ year debate about Joe just throwing the ball away and Dwight just happening to catch it. - Secondly, for me it was great to hear they lived in Hayward CA. - I not only spent over 40 years in CA / Bay area from 1979-2021 but 20 of them was Hayward. I once met Dwight in a Safeway grocery store and we talked for over 10 min. - He told me "The Catch" is what most fans ask him about. He also told me it was practiced with Joe, dozens of times. I was a huge fan of the Niners. I video taped that game as well as the first Super Bowl they were in. (Right after that.) (I still have the tape) I also got the DVD's of the 5 super Bowls they won. I will forever love Joe Montana, Steve Young and Jerry Rice. (They still have individual records that no other players have ever beaten.) I am grateful that I lived in the right place at the right time. I feel part of the well deserved celebration of a team so awesome, with great individual players as well as a smart and creative manager. It was just what I needed. (Moving from MN to CA in 1979, and watching the Vikings go to the Super Bowl 4 times and LOSE.) The 49ers will always have a place in my heart. This year Brock Purdy is looking like another future Joe Montana. Maybe they will win the SB again or maybe even the Vikings finally. I have mixed feelings. I now am back in MN. (Life is a weird thing...lol.) I left my heart in San Francisco. Now I finally understand the song. We will see what happens.

When he first became known during the 1981 season, my Dad couldn't remember his name. Dad just knew it was a name like Jim or Jack or John. And the last name was named after a state in the West. So, he became "Jim Utah" in my family. By the time the 49ers beat the Cowboys to go to the Super Bowl, Dad knew his real name but we still love calling him "Jim Utah" out of respect to Dad. God bless Dwight Clark and Joe (Jim Utah).

Sometime in the early 90s, Joe and Dwight came strolling into the bar I was working at in Los Gatos, CA. It was a busy summer night at the Los Gatos Brewing Company. A new brew pub and restaurant at the time. The bar area was pack as word spread in about .3 seconds that these two very well know celebrities has just entered the area. Talk about grown, well-to-do, men and women, loosing all senses of themselves. They suffocated those poor guys with greetings and handshakes. Even the boss of the place on that night lost his mind to start pitching investment opportunities to Joe. It was crazy. Apparently, these types of situations were not new for Joe. And he came prepared. As about 20 grown adults surrounded both Joe and Dwight, Joe, in a stroke of brilliance reach into his pocket. In a flash, Joe thew down a nicely manufactured glass canister stink bomb. It immediately took effect and his clambering admires were running for breathable air. But Joe just stood there smiling, unaffected. It was brilliant. They were great guys that evening. Talking to everyone. Enjoying their night out.

When Joe was in his prime, when he hooked up with Jerry Rice that was it. In the 1980's the NFC dominated. The AFC won the super bowl once in 10 years. So in effect the NFC championship game was the real super bowl. In my opinion the 49ers had the least talent of the following teams from top to bottom: Bears, Redskins, Giants. The Giants had the most transformative devensive player: Lawrence Taylor. The 85 Chicago Bears had the most complete roster of dominance since the 1970's Steelers. And the Washington Redskins had the greatest offensive line ever. That's the conference of champions Joe Montana had to face, and let me be clear, they were multiple champions no less with the Giants and Redskins. Bill Walsh's talent was play calling. Bill Parcell's talent was telling his guys to do what was nessessary to take out Joe Montana. Cause Joe was bloodless in that he didn't rattle. Ever. In the '89 NFC title game Giant defensive tackle Leonard Marshall grabbed Montana's arm and snapped it. As great as the NY Giants were, they couldn't beat Joe Montana and Jerry Rice straight up. Bill Walsh retired too soon. But he and George Sefiert got it in their stupid heads that Joe had to be replaced by Steve Young. Now Steve Young is in the hall of fame, and he did beat the Chargers in '95 but he was foolish to force Montana out. He runs right into the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay which ended his playoff runs and gave him the concussions and shortened his career. Yeah Steve Young could run, but he wasn't close to Montana in overall ability.
