Episode 1 of 'A Spy in Exile - The Making of Agent Carol'
During the Northern Ireland Troubles, Martin McGartland was one of MI5's most priceless assets.
Born into a staunchly republican family in the IRA heartland of west Belfast in the 1970s, the British spy, codenamed Agent Carol, went on to infiltrate one of the most feared and ruthless terror gangs in the world.
He stopped shootings, bombings and murders but his fearless undercover activities came at a price.
Now living in exile under a secret identity, McGartland gives his most indepth and explosive interview to date. And he reveals how MI5 ended up treating him worse than the IRA who tried to murder him - twice.
This is the first espisode in a special four part series. McGartland talks about his childhood, how his 12 year-old sister was recruited into the ranks of the IRA and describes how a hatred for terrorism saw him groomed by the British security services.

Thanks Patricia, absolutely fantastic!!!!!! Your channel is the best thing that I have discovered in a long time. I am working my way through the set of videos and I am enjoying every second of it. I read the book about Marty, but to hear him tell it is something else. As a man who grew up on the Shankill Road in the 60s and 70s, a lot of this resonates with me. I avoided the Paramilitaries, but saw many young friends drawn into their clutches. The RUC and MI5 were ruthless and I doubt very much if we will ever learn about the full extent of the collusion and dirty tricks.

The 'Troubles' in Ireland saddened me deeply. If some empathy towards the Catholic population (who were effectively second class citizens with poor housing, poor job prospects, under represented politically, and a biassed Protestant dominated police force) had been shown, and these inbalances addressed, maybe the abhorrent loss of life and misery on all sides could have been avoided. As for Martin and, indeed, all informers, I am not sure how I feel about him. It's a dangerous game for sure with the personal conseqences having to be weighed and accepted before going in that direction. Personally, I think there is something distasteful in betraying your own and I would not partake in such actions. I feel he was manipulated to some degree. The SB may have identified a vulnerbaility there due to age and financial insecurity and this is equally distasteful. He paid a huge price undoubtedly. I feel there must have been some level of collusion between 'loyalist' paramilitaries and the whole NI security establishment and, in my view, all paramilitares and the actions they took part in are abhorrent in equal measure. I often wondered if any 'Loyalist' paramilitary members turned on their owm too and supplied information to their opposite numbers? I hope the dark days that plauged those 6 connties are over for ever, irrespective of a unification with the Replublic (which is highly probable) or as a a Province in the UK where hollistic equality reigns!

He said the ira were just thugs and psychos who terrorised the Catholic community , scap, cahill and Donaldson were all bigger fish who became British agents cos they were being blackmailed by brits cos they were having sex with underage teenage girls, noncing them basically and noncing little kids , not really protecting Catholic community that is it , fair play to you marty you saved a lot of lives and blew away a lot of hypocrisy that ira were heroic defenders of the Catholic community , they weren't they killed more catholics than British army did and out of the 1800 people they killed during the troubles over 600 were innocent civilians
