I switched over from a Mini-DSP to a Full Manual Subwoofer Calibration & EQ Using Audyssey MultEQ-X & REW! It works really well. I discuss how I make a House Curve or a Room Curve specific to your room and your subwoofer. A room curve is not about copying somebody else values and expecting them to work. Your subwoofers' response is tailor-made for your room.
I also discuss how I calibrate multiple subwoofers and time align them quite simply. I also discuss the ins and outs of using Audyssey's MultEQ-X app. It's limitations and it's benefits. I believe that getting the best sound is only available when you manually EQ your system. I don't think any automatic room correction software can get the results that you can get when manually doing this.
Please let me know what you think in the comments, and if you have any questions please let me know.

Thanks again for the video. It helped me alot. Today I finally calibrated my system. Then it really blew me away! With 1/6 smoothing, I personally like the speakers a little more. It's even more detailed, which I prefer. It took me almost half a day to equalize the subwoofers. In the end I had to play with the distance. Otherwise I couldn't get rid of a bass hole at 90 Hz. A second equalization of the subs had almost no effect on the frequency response. I'll test some more here. However, it already sounds incredibly good.

Excellent. I've been calibrating again today also. Another sub calibration, testing 120Hz roll-off vs not using one. Just wanted to see the difference. I've also started calibrating my speakers separately, and they sound excellent. I'm addicted, LOL. You could try moving the sub a little if you can. I've seen that even moving an inch or 2 can make a difference. But, I have a very similar issue.

Great Tutorial! I got great Results by importing REW measurements into MSO and uploading the filters to a miniDSP 2x4HD. Although the miniDSP "only" supports 10 Filters per subwoofer and is limited to 16 db + - cut / increase, MSO pretty much calculated a flat response, which I could confirm with REW later. You can also limit or increase the Q's so they'd fit into the multeq x limitation. What I liked about MSO is that you don't need to fiddle with your target settings like in the REW EQ. It will do all the math to give you the best possible response within your target settings.
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 9 ай бұрын
Thanks. I think 10 filters per subwoofer is generally enough to get a very good response. I've never looked into MSO. Can you get better results than just using REW EQ?
@DrSchnaggelz
@DrSchnaggelz 9 ай бұрын
@hdmoviesource It depends. If you're just optimising for the main listening position, I'd say the REW method is great. But if you're looking for optimising multiple positions at once, MSO is more capable and will give you better results. I've just used it with a minidsp 2x4 hd, but I'm now trying to figure out a way to import the mso filters into MultEQ X. There is a very good MSO tutorial by Jeff Mery here on KZfaq. You should definitely check it out. I'd be interested in your opinion on MSO. I think it's a really nice tool and it's free like REW.

I've watched it, but I could do with a refresher. How many filters are there? It would be nice if it had an export feature for MiniDSP?@@DrSchnaggelz
@DrSchnaggelz
@DrSchnaggelz 9 ай бұрын
There is a maximum of 10 filters for each individual output and 10 for the input (called shared filters in MSO) , so it's basically the same as on the miniDSP. There is a special export function in MSO for miniDSP/PEQ under "tools" - "application options". After setting up the those options you're able to export the filters with a right click and then there should be an option for exporting miniDSP file or something like that, not sure what it's actually called right now, but it's kind of obvious if you see it.

Thanks again for taking time to put these videos together. I appreciate the fact that you take your time and explain why/why not you are doing something. Yes, it's a bit longer video, but it also helps me understand they "why" vs just "select this button" and move on approach. From what I understand, It appears you are getting a measurement from each Sub, then taking a measurement for both. You only EQ'd the both response. Maybe I am missing something, so can you clarify why do we not calibrate or EQ each Subwoofer separately, then combine the EQ'd Subs response? I'm not understanding how applying the same EQ to both subs provides the result that we want. Thank you
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 6 ай бұрын
Thanks Brandon. Yes, we take the combined response of both subs, and it gives you a single response, and that's what you EQ. The results that you get, you apply to both subs, and it should give you your desired result. If you're using MultEQ-X you add the results into the subwoofer MultEQ-X channel, and if you're using a Mini-DSP then you apply it to both channels.
@westsmith8987
@westsmith8987 10 ай бұрын
One way you can stack Filters in the mini DSP is to do first calibration on the output peq section, and then refine the response using the peq on the input side to stack your filters. thats also where you would put the shelf filter for your house curve. one advantage you get by removing the mini dsp is you remove the group delay for the sub channel that the Mini DSP introduces. so you response should be "tighter" bass. not sure if we can actually perceive it, but you can certainly mesure it
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. I may even give it a try because the results that you can get with a mini-DSP are equally excellent. Yeah, I noticed that the delay is significantly higher going through Mini-DSP than going through Audyssey.

Hi, great video again!🙂 At the beginning in your 'no calibration.mqx'-file you set all speakers to LARGE; do you change this at some point and how do you determine the crossover-frequencies?
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 10 ай бұрын
Yes, I made sure my saved file has all the speakers set to large when calibrating. You can do this in the MultEQ-X app. Once I've finished calibrated everything, I set my speakers to small with an 80hz crossover. You can measure your speakers in REW and see at what frequency they start to fall. My speakers start to fall at 60hz. However, I believe that 80hz simply sounds better and takes the stress of your amp and speakers. There's not many times that would wouldn't want your speakers set to 80hz unless you're using a satellite speaker system or something.

This is flippin awesome, thanks for the hard work here, can’t wait to try this (and I’ve tried a lot of stuff…). Question: if my loudest listening levels are -15 on my AVR (8805A), could I target this room curve at that volume, and then turn in Dynamic EQ with a 15dB offset, so if gently applies the same room curve at lower volumes? I keep thinking of myself as a purist, but I always find myself liking Dynamic EQ better ON than OFF. What are your thoughts here?

I've never actually used Dynamic EQ, but from what you're saying it sounds correct, and I believe that's how it works. So instead of 0 being reference, -15 is reference in volume.

Love to see another MultEQ-X enthusiast (glad to know I am not the only ‘nut’ out there…..hahaha). Really was revolutionary when Audyssey introduced the ability to disable auto-leveling.Frankly, it never made sense to me that it wasn’t automatically disabled. Why have volume balancing when the user’s whole goal is to have certain frequencies at a higher volume to begin with? This tutorial is awesome. I will definitely being trying this in the future. One thing I didn't understand is how you have the volume and gains set on your subs during the calibration process. You calibrate to flat at ~70 dB and then you raise the volume on the subs. What was your volume setting on the receiver when you are doing the calibration and what was the starting gain on the subs? I want to understand how you are not overdriving the subs when you raise the levels. Thanks in advance.
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 9 ай бұрын
The volume on my receiver was at a constant -10. I continued to raise the volume if needed on the actual subs themselves. The gain on my subs had the volume at 55, and when finished it's around 70 to 75+. Typically I lose around 10db or so, maybe more in volume. Thanks.
@FriendOfaCoolFriend
@FriendOfaCoolFriend 8 ай бұрын
Hey bud. First find a volume level of 75 db. For me this is -10 on my AVR. Then I adjust the volume level of subs individually till each sub is at 75 db. Don’t change the AVR when doing this. Only the sub volume. Once each sub is measuring at 75db, then turn all subs on together and reduce the volume on each sub the same amount till the collective is 75 db. You’ve level matched your subs. Now time align them. Know that time aligning could change your spl db response. So adjust the group volumes, not individually, after time alignment. Then start the EQ process covered here. Hope this helps!
