That was prior to the new CBA. With the new CBA now, the maximum number of years UFA and RFA, signing contracts with new teams, can go is 7 years and if you are resigning a player under contract, is 8 years. You would see a lot of term contracts, the Parise and Suter deals, Shea Weber signed a 14 year deal with the Predators, Duncan Keith signed a 13 year deal with the Blackhawks in 2009, Henrik Zetterberg signed a 12 year contract in 09 with The Red Wings, Crosby signed a 12 year contract with the Penguins in 2012, Ovechkin I think signed a 12 year contract with the Capitals in 08.

Suter and Parise were cancers in the locker room, forcing guys to practice in Edina and not allowing young guys to have a say in the locker room were what caused this move. Suter and praise had too big of an ego to take a trade, This move looks better everyday.
@hockeymike3332 жыл бұрын
Front loading contracts needs to end. Very few players should be getting 6-8 year contracts, but all the teams are now doing it to reduce the annual salary hit the first few years.... I understand injuries and things happen, but these teams need to be held more to upholding contracts, maybe by retaining more of the salary even when bought out. They're trying to get more cap space than is allowed by distributing it over more years, very few plan on holding them, and then buying out just turns it into a salary cap bypass for the first few years of these long contracts, you could fit an extra few depth players on the roster doing it. This concept makes a joke of the current salary cap, and is obviously a problem when almost all teams are now playing that game because they almost have to when the others are.
@kurtwpg2 жыл бұрын
That's the thing. If you've already been the general manager for 3 years, and you sign a guy to an 8 year frontloaded contract with big signing bonus numbers in the final years, you'll probably be gone before the contract becomes a problem.

Well these contracts are not BG’s doing. They happened 2 gms ago.
@FriendlyNeighboorhoodWildFan Жыл бұрын
My guy…you want the Wild to be penalized MORE!? This isn’t cap circumvention. This is perfectly legal calculated risk and quite frankly wise asset management. Next few seasons could be rough, but this was necessary from a cap management perspective. There weren’t many other options either when you factor in all the details to this situation ie cap recapture penalties if they retire early. They upheld the contracts through over half their term and then decided to terminate them and pay the hefty buyout penalty to do so. Seems fair, no?
@hockeymike333 Жыл бұрын
@@FriendlyNeighboorhoodWildFan I'm in no way implying the Wild are doing anything wrong, as this is all the meta now. It's just not the best path for the league to start going down. If cap space needs to be raised so be it. I know the NHLPA has about 2 years left on the league debt and will probably raise then, but until then the grey areas of salary cap are being abused and yes some teams are paying for their gambles and others are cashing in. I'd hope the buyouts would have more impact on cap after so team's wouldn't be so whimsical with these types of contracts as it's usually just the team owners paying a lump sum buyout. Teams not in the running are finding some good deals lately because of it though.
@FriendlyNeighboorhoodWildFan Жыл бұрын

He now gets rid of our best playoff performer in parise, and our best defensive defenseman in order to keep dumba-ss. He put us in cap hell. He said this helps us down the road. How exactly is that when their caps come back literally one year later! If we bring in boldy, rossi and one other guy, along with keeping fiala and kaprizov at 8 million per, which is not enough for kaprizov apparently, then that would put you with 14 guys and only 7 million left in cap space roughly... btw one of those contracts up after next year is kahkonnen's.
