Lot of people don’t realize that it was now or never. If they went this avenue in the coming years, the buyouts would’ve been way worse. Guerin has balls of steel and I applaud him for it. The contracts were awful the second pen hit paper.

Guerin had to buy them out because of the expansion draft. Both Suter and Parise had no move clauses so the Wild were forced to protect them. So take the cap hit now to ensure you don't lose a good player of the future.

Tampa Vegas Islanders and Boston are ahead of the curve in the NHL.Maple leafs were up 3-1 in playoffs to Montreal and lost, Carey Price was outstanding. The point is this only a handful of teams can sign and put up a top 3 team ,general managers have to make decisions to that standard.

For the record, the CBA changed AFTER these contracts were signed. Under current CBA rules they couldn’t make these contracts… and if the team knew that new recapture penalties would be introduced after signing them they most definitely would not have signed these two for those contracts. So as a wild fan I’m kinda ticked that new rules got invented after these contracts were signed, that essentially would have folded the team … until they modified the recapture penalties to limit it to an annual high dollar value per year. So to summarize…. The wild signed parise/Suter to legal front loaded contracts which did not have any recapture penalties if the players retired. The league then invented new rules which bring on this cap hell and retroactive apply those rules to the wild. Tampa was 17 million over the cap this year…. The league should invent new rules to prevent this, and basically charge Tampa a 17 mill cap recapture hit next season.

Suter must have been a really difficult player to play with in the locker room to also buy him out. Objectively, it's still better to use him in the middle pair than buy him out AND replace him.
