Clark Howard: Save More, Spend Less

Күн бұрын

Clark loves exercise. In fact, he wears three fitness trackers because he enjoys learning and improving his health so much! Data shows that people who are active for 150 minutes/week have less than half the cost of healthcare than sedentary people. Clark re-introduces his One-Minute Challenge to help you take the next step towards an active lifestyle. If you want to increase your physical fitness, it will impact your fiscal fitness, too! Also, the housing market has been crazy over the last few years. But we’re slowly starting to see more inventory growth and price reductions. Clark explains what he’s seeing in the housing market - and the state that’s seeing the highest inventory jump!
Plus, Christa shares your #AskClark questions and Clark gives his take. All this and more on the June 12, 2024, episode of The Clark Howard Show.

I bike vigorously 14 miles every day in the morning usually dawn, that's about an hour plus. I'm 71 and in great health with a VO2 max of 58. As soon as I retired 6 years ago it became my priority after realizing all the health problems seniors experience, I have escaped them all and am in better health than ever in my life at a time when it matters the most. Also do resistant bands, lite weights, eat very healthy ,sleep regular hours and take no meds. Live long and prosper Clark.

Clark, the one activity/exercise that anyone can do and which burns more calories than most other exercises is walking up stairs. They can start with 1 flight the 1st week and increase it by adding 1 flight each week, for example, to a max of 10 flights. Obviously, you have to walk down that number of flights which is also exercise. They can break it up into sets of 2 flights per set with the other 4 sets of 2 flight/set done over the course of the day. Even better is to carry some weight such as a basket of clothing that has to be or has been washed. The more weight, the greater the caloric burn. For even more flexibility as they become more fit, they can do 2 steps at a time going up the stairs. Stairs are great for the leg and the gluteal(Butt) muscles. There are so many things that can be done at home with no equipment and/or with only the things found at home. Jack LaLanne used to have a 15 minute morning TV show that was geared mainly to the housewife. BTW, I have been lifting weights for 61 years this coming August. I still lift 2 hrs /day 4 days/week. In the summer, I also swim roughly 1 mile several times per week doing the breast stroke close-fisted and without kicking. I also do yard work such as mowing with a push mower( 90 minutes/mowing) and, in the winter, shoveling snow off my 70 yard long driveway with a snow shovel. It takes 1 hour for each inch of snow. I use a snow blower if there is 4 or more inches of snow. Mowing and shoveling are forms of exercise. In a scale of 1-5, housework manually done rates between 3 or 4 in terms of activity level. I happen to be 79 and a former natural for life bodybuilding champion. Among my 60 KZfaq videos, there are 2 of me when I competed. I was 39 in one and 41 in the other. I also have a Master's degree in human nutrition. Because competitive bodybuilders use tuna as a major food nutrient, I entered the Master's program to learn why tuna fish had its effect on bodybuilders.

I am a big believer in physical fitness. I have an active job but I still weight lift five nights a week. Resistance training is very important many elderly people have issues with mobility due to lack of muscle mass. If you enter older age with more muscle mass than the average person your outcome is definitely going to be better. My mom is in her sixties and she has poor mobility due to being out of shape and overweight. Unfortunately I don't really see that situation getting better. Some people just really are not into exercise they just don't prioritize it. But for real any type of exercise for longevity really does need to include some type of resistance training. You need to maintain muscle mass, and you should try to build up muscle mass before you enter old age. Age is a number you don't have to become frail and vulnerable it is mostly preventable. There are people who are 50 and can't even walk anymore, because they are so out of shape. You have 90 year olds that do some type of exercise every day. Also it's not always about living longer it's how do you want the last 10 years of your life to be spent.

I think the insurance through the utility company may be worth it if you have older system or allot of trees in your yard where your water line and sewer is . Also k own defective piping as Clark talked about . Maybe a house before 1990 that hasn't had these pipes upgraded . My daughters 1970 house had to have her sewer replaced that also caused a flood in her house . The sewer replacement cost 10 grand . The inside repairs about the same but her homeowners covered that . She was fortunate that she got covered sewer backup from her insurer . It was a separate item she needed to accept . Fortunate she did . My son needed to replace his septic system . That was 10 grand . Many sewer repairs in my neighborhood do to a tree that was initially planted when the development was built that has a very intensive root system that eats sewer lines for breakfast . So I don't think it's a one size deal . Another problem in my neighborhood is the waterline from the street using a defective pipe . Mne has been repaired multiple times as many others but that's the water companies problem as it's before the water meter .

The boomer wave may have begun where the largest generation is beginning to fade away I see many want to change their location and life to something new . COVID paused that but as the new interest rates become more accepted boomers are ready to end that pause . The math says a substantial shift is coming with this generation fading and the next not nearly as large so inventory will increase . Now we still have the problem of investor buying that usually picks up those bargain buys .

Need to have the main drain cleared every few years, that is preventative maintenance to help avoid a major issue. Best to buy a new car when a model is changing. So a new model comes out see if you can get a deal on the current model. Example, the Subaru Forester has big changes on their 25 model, once that hits the lots, try to get a 24.
