Utd won the 99 CL on a flick of the foot, the 2008 CL on a penalty kick. That absolutely changes the way Utd were seen, those small moments make careers and break careers. So to try and downplay it doesn't really make sense.
@surindersingh724
@surindersingh724 2 жыл бұрын
It’s not being downplayed. The point is if that flick of the boot from Ole didn’t happen or the VDS save didn’t happen, it wouldn’t have reflected badly on SAF. Nobody would’ve turned around and said SAF is a bad manager just because he never won the CL. The manager has a big effect on a team but not to the minutest of details like a player missing a shot or a keeper not saving a penalty. And by the same argument, Jose shouldn’t be lauded to the heavens because Rashford scored a last minute worldy freekick and Ole lambasted into the mud because De Gea couldn’t score a penalty.

@@surindersingh724 You do realise that Utd started the season in the CL right? They were eliminated from the tournament, went to Europa and Lost the final to a team who had never won any competition of any sort. If you also remember Ole didn't make a sub until 1st half of ET, allowed the game to drift when it was obvious Villareal wanted penalties. There's no way other to say it, that was a massive failure and Ole SHOULD be judged because of it. The game should never have gone to pens. Jose and Fergie were serial winners, yes them losing the finals wouldn't have effected their respective reputations, but winning, especially in Fergie's situation definitely enhanced his. That CL victory elevated him to a different level. That can't be disputed. So the comparison to Ole losing to a minnow of European football isn't a valid one.

@@jonathanamponsah9347 takes the club to second place, then demands signings in the summer. Nothing wrong with that. Denied what he wanted, which is probably wrong but the club had a point in that he had already signed a lid of defenders so asking for more to replace them was never going to go down well; anyway debatable. Either way, he threw his toys out of the pram. He wanted to make it clear that any lack of success in the upcoming season had nothing to do with with him and it was all the club’s fault. Before a ball was even kicked that season, he put down the players and he stated we had no chance. Of course he was going to lose the dressing room after that. Instead of doing his best with what he had, ie be professional, he went out his way to get fired. If he was that disgusted, or had integrity, he would have resigned but he wanted to the payout. That’s how he put himself ahead of the players and the club. His reputation was his number one priority.

David Moyes brought a mid table mentality with him to United and that didn't go well. Ferdinand talked about the video meetings Moyes would have in which he spent time showing how to stop the other team. Ferdinand said at United they didn't worry about the other teams they let the other teams worry about them. LVG needed more time and better veteran players. He was always willing to give youth a chance and he brought a possession style to United. Attack, Attack, Attack was never part of his philosophy of football. Jose was Moyes with a better mentality. His style was/is always to disrupt the other team and nick a goal or two. He would prefer winning 1-0 than 5-4. If he had star players he relied on their quality to score but he had no clue about offensive football and that was an assessment from some of his former players like Hazard. OGS was the best of the lot because he understood the culture and the philosophy of Manchester United. He set the tempo at the club and by all accounts the place was a better place to work than under Jose. His players genuinely liked him but they didn't fear him in anyway. I would venture to guess they didn't respect him as a Manager because he was too easy and protective of them. And that's the reason for where they are now. OGS never held them accountable. He was more a rah rah type of Manager and that only works for awhile. When it was time to kick some them in their ass, he never did that. He never tested their character and as a result when it went bad, it went very, very, very bad.

Moyes - Disaster but 90% of managers would have failed we should have appointed Jose or Ancelotti or Guardiola then. Giggs - did okay and stabilised the squad in the few games he had Van Gaal - probably the only one to bring a style of play and bigger ideas but the football was dire too many draws and boring games so he restored pride and set up the squad for the next guy and won the FA cup. Mourinho - best since SAF in terms of trophies but he left the squad in a terrible state and sent the club backwards. Ole - probably the actual best since SAF in terms of overall quality, got the squad into the best shape since SAF left and most exciting football just unlucky in some cup competitions and should have had a trophy to his name. Carrick - same as Giggs but better. Rangnick- disaster, worst season in our PL history, but I don’t blame Rangnick for it and I think the issues identified under him will benefit Ten Hag and the long term future of the club.

A percentage of this squad are a disgrace, despite Ole protecting them they threw him under the bus. I blame Woodward, the minute he started to put players above managers he created this atmosphere. Look at Rio, the second Sir Alex retired he came out and had a go because Moyse banned chips from the canteen. Fergie would have booted him out the club for even questioning one of his decisions but no within 7 months Moyse was booted out. When it comes to Jose vs Ole its a no brainer - Jose got us our highest ever points total post Fergie, he won us 2 trophies in his first season with a really fun Europa League run, his signings were decent and better than ole's imo. His football was bad but it was more compact and organised than Ole's. Jose has defo been the best manager we have had since Sir Alex and he was still deservedly sacked as I never agreed with the style of football, his reputation of falling out with dressing rooms, his short termism. I think Jose is finished at the top level and his style is outdated however Ole IS the reason we are an utter shambles at the moment - this team rn is HIS team, his terrible signings, he played horrific football too and conceded way more goals, he lacked any tactical ability and regularly bottled games, he was a glazer puppet and was just happy to be a utd manager. Some of the football was mint and for an 18 month period we were one of the best teams around. Mourinho needed support from the board, when he realised that his concerns were falling on deaf ears he fell out with everyone, and I can't blame him! No one wants to work in a work place where you are not listened to, supported and respected. Stephens comments are ignorant imo, they ignore the fact that the lack of support from the board left Jose cornered, disrespected and ultimately contributing to him losing the dressing room. Piss poor club management.

Looking at these three, the pain United fans feel is self-inflicted. How deluded you have to be to say Ole is 'best since SAF"? That goal in '99 and those memories still live. My take is that Jose is the best but only because we didn't give more time to LVG. LVG was a good fit for United, Jose was never that. ETH might be the solution, but we need to give him more time and not throw him for the board to feast. 5 years and we should be mentally ready for second half finish sometime in first two years.

He is delusional and because of people like him, we will end up being like Arsenal sentimentality, bringing down the standards of the club and settling for mediocre. I have never heard a player post SAF or in the modern game talk about being attracted to a football club because of the football they play but you will hear alot about the football project and ambition to win silverware. If United wants to continue down this path of beautiful football over effective football that gets Trophies then expect a while before the glory days come again, and we not talking about your FA cups or silverware that they insulted under Jose but major honours.

Last manager to win a trophy at United too. The only United manager to beat the rest of the 19 teams in the Premier League season. The least goals conceded. 1st Louis Van Gaal 2nd Jose Mourhinio 3rd Carricky 4th Ralf 5th Giggs 6th Ole 7th Moyes Ole gave us some good moments but we were never taken seriously under Ole. I don't rate that win against PSG- it was a VAR penalty and PSG are bigger bottle jobs than us, plus we got smashed at old Trafford which is why we had to go there and win by 2 goals. Ok he took us on some good runs but it was all freestyle football, counter attacking and moments FC. Ole also delivered some of the worst moments of all time, 0-5 loss to Liverpool it was just embarrassing and you can't just forget about the fact it was not a freek result it was coming for weeks. Ole lowered the reputation of United and he took us to new lows that are much MUCH worse than LVG being boring or Jose losing the dressing room and parking the bus at Anfield. Ole lost at home to Cardiff, 0-2 they were already down, how many times did he lose at home to Crystal Palace? And he was stubborn but not in a good way, he was too nice, too blinkered and obviously a good smokescreen for the Glazers and Ed. We were never a laughing stock under Jose, not even under Moyes, I don't recall any away fans chanting for Jose to stay or for Moyes to stay like they did when they were all mocking us singing "Ole's at the wheel", he was out of his depth at best. Sometimes this nostalgic Ole love in makes me feel very marginalised as if I'm not a proper United fan just because I think Ole got an easier ride than his predecessors and the only reason why he did was because he was clearly a yes man who didn't actually have the management skills nor the personality to be at a top club. We never played great under Ole, though we scored some great goals, the midfield he gave us was nothing short of dire and he set us back 3 or 4 years he didn't build anything.

Moyes and LVG were both disasters for the clearout they oversaw of the championship winning core. Moyes cleaned out the entire backroom staff and Van Gaal cleared out so many players who understood the winning culture at United and could've helped get a better tune out of the likes of Pogba and Lingard who we now look at as the beginning of this toxic culture that has festered at United. Van Gaal says the things fans want to hear now but he was atrocious with some of the transfer business in the post-Fergie era and easily the most horrendous style of football besides that three game period that included City and Liverpool.

Moyes didn't deserve time when he already had the champions of England and Brought them to 7th. He kicked out all the regular coaches there too and replaced them with his own. His football over the years has never been that amazing and its not like he's had a job anywhere else to the same level as utd. A job like Everton and West Ham has proven to be his level. He doesn't have the motivational ability to save a team like Sunderland and he didn't have the high level ability to or ability to cope with pressure at a club like utd. Van gaal again had the worst style of football ive ever seen - that wasnt because of the players he had (Moyes less than a year prior played much more entertaining football). I got the feeling that unless we had a super squad which wasnt gonna happen then he was never gonna work anyway - and if he did have a super squad then he'd probs be playing like Simeone's atletico Madrid have all these years where its so boring to watch - I want utd to be successful but I want to be entertained also when watching football otherwise whats the point, trophies dont get me excited if the final to win them is so unbearably boring and I cant remember it

Moyes was simply not given enough time. That squad that he inherited was a disaster with Anderson and Cleverly in midfield and Vidic and Ferdinand in defence. As well as a love stick Van Persie who just packed it in after Fergy left. It was only Fergy's absolute genius that got that made that team world beaters. And there is a massive agenda against Moyes wrt "what he said". Ole said many identical things like EXACTLY the much hated "we aspire to be on City's level". LVG kept saying the expectation is too much and Liverpool are a bigger club. And Moyes had to endure the ineptitude that was Woodward. The thing that doesn't get talked about enough is the fact that Woodworm sent the wrong staff to sign Herrera when that was an absolute done deal. I absolutely, vehemently disagree about Rangnick being "a breath of fresh air" in these press conferences. The guy has to manage a team and he's totally lost control. He gets far too much protection by everyone here. Moaning in press conferences brings us no benefit. Again you have to MANAGE! You motivate players, install your philosophy. MANAGE! And he's failed at doing the fundamental purpose of his job.
