Seeing plenty of cynicism in the comments re the fake noise and gears. Understandable! I was dubious too before I drove it. But I encourage you to reserve judgement until you’ve had a go for yourself. Good news for our UK viewers: we’ll have a bunch of these available for test drive at our Harrogate live show in a few weeks.

I agree, it's very difficult to say if you actually want or like these features till you've tried them for yourself, and as you mention, but it's worth repeating, because they are just Software, buys can simply turn them off if they don't like them. For me, after 10 years of EV driving, not only did i turn them off, but i found them to feel "old fashioned" and annoyingly distracting, having actually not just got used too, but actually become appreciative of, the way a BEV fundamentally performs, ie in silence with true linear performance. Having to pull paddles to make the car "change gear" was fun, for about an hour, but soon became tedious and got turned off never to be turned on again. What those "mimicry features" do provide is a gateway for people not used too, or experienced with BEVs to help smooth the transition from one to the other.

Let's just say that until you drive one, then you'll never understand it. Once you do drive one, it will all make perfect sense. It can be a perfectly normal EV, quiet and silent, and a good daily driver. Take it on the open road with a few twisting roads and a press of the N Mode and N-E shift, and this thing becomes a beast, and the fake engine sounds all make perfect sense. You feel connected and engaged, and it puts a massive smile on your face, too.

It's interesting to watch people complain about engine sounds and focus on fake gears here and think about what Hyundai car engineers might be thinking. The core technology of this car is not fake gears or engine sounds. It needs to focus on the fact that this latest electric car has a regenerative braking function of 0.6g. It's the kind of experimental results that engineers have found out as Korea core companies provide Hyundai with the latest parts. It's the result of an experiment on how a heavy car recovers physical energy from the heat and reaction that is generated from tremendous kinetic energy without damaging the batteries. There is currently no electric car that can accommodate it except the Ioniq 5N. It can be implemented in SK on company's latest batteries and electric systems made by Hyundai engineers and even found out that the battery's temperature is decreasing while recovering that energy. The technology is the driving force behind the fake gears that make it easy for the 2.2 ton electric car to sprint over 200km/h and push the brakes To provide that capability, Porsche or Tesla offer pricey, useless brakes as an option. But they cannot run. Porsche, which even costs several times more than the Ioniq 5n, offers low-quality batteries from China, and the batteries are suspected of having pirated key battery technology from South Korean company LG. Even the duplicated batteries are LG's older battery technology. That's what's happening in the electric car market right now. Don't you see that the days are numbered when scams like fake gears from carmakers with history and tradition in front of the latest technology? They now have to knock on their calculators in front of Hyundai latest electric monsters. I wonder how I can steal twice as much money from your pocket as Hyundai but the reality won't be that easy. Enjoy memories of the engine in your dusty garage Super cars are no longer part of the exclusive possession

Your wishes are not as far away as you might think... after forty years of owning BMW's, I changed to a Kia Niro EV a year ago. My expectation was a mediocre, economic practical vehicle. I could not have been more wrong; it is competent and engaging, with a nicely sorted chassis. I look for excuses to drive it, and I have even learned to live with FWD for the first time; I could never come to grips with my wife's 2017 Focus. Now, if only I could find a way to permanently disable the beeping steering-wheel tugger, and the startup screen that makes me promise to be a good boy OR ELSE, and my life would be complete! 🤬 (Of course I have bought a lottery ticket... I called it 'Ioniq 5 - N') 😜

Yeah, Hyundai is nailing it and it seems like currently they are the only car manufacturer understand what the car enthusiast wants and bring that well packaged into EV form. Really kudos to them and it does makes me seriously consider them in the future if we can only have EV. Surely others will come, Hyundai has a good headstart now. This is what a traditional car manufacturer can offer for car enthusiast in the EV only world that it seems like new EV manufacturers don't understand. Tesla has been in the EV game for ages now, but they don't understand enthusiast, or maybe they never will since they never market themselves for that at all. I'm curious others what will come such as with Honda and Toyota which is really into catering enthusiast but just trying into full EVs. For now, they are pretty much into hybrids.

I can see why Jack is excited, but I keep coming back to the same old premise that as with most people's gadgets, they will only ever use the basic functions on a regular basis, many not even aware of what those gadgets are capable of - including cars - and yet they will have purposely gone out to buy the latest and greatest, wasting their hard earned dosh in the process when a more basic model would have served them extremely well. Even for car mad enthusiasts, most of them will live in large towns and cities, rarely getting the opportunity to make the most of the Ionic N and end up driving it in 'normal' mode 99% of the time; makes the Ionic N kind of pointless really. Seems like Hyundai spent inordinate amounts of time and money on something that doesn't really drive the general adoption of electrification of transport in a truly meaningful way. Sorry, that all sounds rather humbug of me, but I don't think it makes my comments any less true. Kudos to the F.C. team for a beautifully made episode. 😊

We have a smart #1 (premium, not brabus), I'm not a petrolhead and my days of driving fast are well behind me. For EVs to continue their positive trend, it's so important that we have a wide range of options to suit all different kinds of customer, and this Ioniq 5N seems to be getting so much (positive) attention from "driver's car" drivers, that as a result, it's doing a whole heap of good for EVs as a whole. However the feeling...the sensation, the physical shift in weight, momentum, and inertia is real. That's the important part. This is the start of gen 2.0 for EVs. HYUNDAI deserves major credit. Love your enthusiasm for the car and to be honest its a good car. Trouble for me its a EV. I've seen on the internet quite a few Ioniq 5's that needed a battery change- that frightened me in that they came out at £60,000!! I'll be honest, I am not convinced about EV's, its there depreciation and insurance costs plus the insidious private fast charger costs. Hyundai are truly a great car manufacturer and as much as I would like to buy this car, it comes with the problems of all EV's.

Love this car, I'm sold on the "gimmicks" this is just what EV's needed, plug me into the matrix babaaaay!!!! Sadly in Canada dealers sell new cars at about 60% above msrp with no budge. So I won't be buying anything new until I'm forced to when my car dies. Hopefully by then this car is 10 years old and a used one affordable by then.

I live 30 mins from a circuit that has one of the lowest drive by test levels in the country. And I have a large track day itch that needs to be scratched. Plus I've loved the Ioniq 5 since launch. I simply can't wait for a year to pass - & probably around 20k in depreciation - to get one.

I am so curious of how this car is to drive - I really liked the cosy base version and I have never, ever, ever, ever missed the engine-sounds or the gear-box in my Zoe (which is surprisingly fun to drive to the point where I really don't recognise the claims that EVs are boring to drive). I have a manual petrol-car too, which I enjoy a lot - but the more I drive my EV, the less I like the engine-noise of my petrol-car... Which makes me wonder what I would make of the Ionic 5 N... Would I find all the computer-game-esque noises and gearshifts as silly as I think I would - or would I fall hopelessly in love with it??? I honestly have no idea!

I drove this at N Festival in Sydney last year at Sydney Motorsport Part. I only had 2 laps, but as a seasoned racer and supersprint competitor I gave it a red hot go. Very impressive car, the fake noises and changes were that good that you forgot it was an EV - apart from the fact that these features actually make the car slower. For me the I5N is a bit chunky, quite heavy, the ride was soft even in sport mode and it’s priced too high for the Australian market. With the Tesla M3P coming in almost $40,000 less, it makes a compelling alternative.

Hmm, I know many will complain but I like the idea of the "gearbox" as an option to turn on for fun with noise. I would love to see a classic mini with that kind of feature retrofitted into it. I have heard the electric conversions so far haven been pretty good and still capture that feel but I feel this would just give it that push over the edge to make those fantastic!

I honestly have a hard time telling you how good its little brother (Kia EV6 GT) is, and just knowing that makes me want one of these NOW. I currently own six factory supercharged ICE performance cars (GT500, Redeyes, TRX, Durango Hellcat, Blackwing), and I am surprisingly impressed with the lessor EV6 GT. The I5N is that much more of an enthusiasts' car than the GT. I am actively trying to make a deal. I am one of the NEVER EV people, but I was trying limit the boring miles on my ICE vehicles, so I tried a performance EV. Obviously, for me range is not an issue as I home charge a few times a week. If you cannot charge at home (or work) and/or need to travel across the country...EV is not for you (unless you like to wait for a refill)! Is it a driving video game...yes!

12:48 "it's the fancy electronics and the imaginary gearbox that are going to steal the headlines for this car I'm sure..., but the unsung hero here, the real star of the show here, is the chassis". Yup, and the hallmark of a truly great driver's car and which will continue to set it apart even when others catch up with the former.

A couple decades ago, a local cartoonist published a short two panel comic about power boating now and in the future. In the future, the manically grinning captain of the boat had the boat engine noise in his headphones and had a seat that trembled, while the rest of the crew and the nature around enjoyed the silence and pleasant ride of the electric motors. So I think the one way to make this car even better would be to give the driver the engine noise in his headphones, and make his seat jerk as if to simulate the gaps between gear shifts. You would spare the other passengers the discomfort.

This same idea as having any 4x4 vehicle. The manufactures engineer them to be so capable off-road but only 1% of people who buy them actual need or want the performance. Would be great if manufactures actually focus all their efforts at making cars that 99% of people actually need/want!

Whether it's the exhaust sound coming from the engine, the exhaust sound coming from the speaker, or the exhaust sound coming from the mouth of the person next to you, if the driver is satisfied, that's everything. @@oddjobsandrandomprojects Well, now, that is a fair point at first glance, but, with a petrol fuelled car you can fill up in a petrol station in minutes and be on your way. Nobody could argue that with battery EVs the process is very likely to be a case of finding an available charging point and waiting for the recharging process to happen. That could be conditional on the temperature too. We should not forget that we can pay for petrol/diesel with cash money if you don't have plastic. (Driving off without paying isn't recommended btw.) Still, all that's a bit of a moot point too in that hydrogen fuelled cars will be flooding our byways and highways tomorrow or early next week. Everyone knows that, especially those in denial because that's why they're in denial. Nobody can forget BMW placing their hydrogen powered car in the forefront of their product range at the recent Beijing car show. Shanghai, next year, in contrast will feature many, many, more hydrogen powered cars on the stands. I gather, from my imaginings, battery EVs will be packed into a small shed round the back of the lavs. Tesla will have a presence by having photocopies of their range stapled to telegraph poles around the venue. And to repeat, everyone knows that.
