I've seen a lot of people say that electric cars aren't fun. Obviously it won't be as much fun as an ICE car. So what should we do? Hyundai Motor Company has come up with a good proposal, although it is not a perfect answer. At least until now, no automaker has come up with an offer as good as this one. It's okay if you don't accept this offer. Instead, let’s support their attitude. A better offer may come to us later.

Provided you can also turn the fake gearbox off to get the best lap times out of it too. Driving with fake flappy paddle gear shifts is great fun, but it doesn't give you the best the car can do, and doing back to back laps with gear shifts and without them would add a whole other dimension to playing with it on the track. Same story with CVTs - sure they sell better when they behave in a familiar way, especially the mass market stuff where most of the customers have no idea what they're buying, but anyone who understands how they work sees it as deliberately not playing to the advantages the system was designed to have over gearboxes in the first place, in both efficiency and performance.

I think you will find in business almost all problems are caused by the reverse. Techies running programs developing things for end consumers. I've been in market research for car manufacturers. I can assure you it's engineers that screw up the process
@pensiveidea
@pensiveidea 2 ай бұрын
@@1949cr Thank you, that is very interesting. I've been wondering about that, especially with what's happened to Boeing. At first glance it appears to be engineering vs bean counters, but as is often the case, it's just not that simple. Perhaps delving deeper into this could establish a methodology where the different forces play in harmony as opposed to any one department having veto power.
@peglor
@peglor 2 ай бұрын
@@pensiveidea I don't think anyone looking at the Boeing scandals thinks it's not a problem with bean counting (Or rather sociopaths who love money far more than any concept of ethics - cost engineering is a very important part of making products better when done right). Boeing saved money by firing their highly experienced, highly qualified engineers, literally outsourcing most of their engineering to unqualified but much cheaper companies in the far east, becase in a competitive labour market you actually have to pay serious money to get decent engineers. You could say the engineering problem was a lack of engineers, but that would be misrepresenting what they're doing quite dramatically, when the real problem was not being profitable enough rather than not being profitable. This, combined with the FAA being underfunded and mostly rubber stamping whatever Boeing told them, allowed it to get as far as it did. As for market research being the good thing and engineers messing it all up in the car industry, that's unfortunately exactly what I would expect to hear from someone who works in marketing and doesn't understand that engineering is limited by the laws of physics, not by peoples random wishes in surveys. Engineers are victims of their own success in the automotive world - it's not easy to make 2 tonnes of steel do 200 km/h so smoothly and safely that the average driver won't immediately kill themselves doing it, but modern cars, in fact cars from 20 years ago in many cases, have made it an underwhelming experience. Also, where in the market research did consumers request that cars collect as much data about everything their 'owners' do to send back to the car companies without telling them. I put owner in inverted commas because while they paid for it, they don't own the car - anything with on the air updates can be bricked remotely at the whim of the manufacturer. I don't think consumers clamoured for that one either but they're getting it whether they like it or not.

As a hoon at heart.. what Hyundai has done with their "N" cars - ICE and... cough.. EV... is pretty damned impressive. Your overview of the brilliance of the "fake" ICE sound and gearing characteristics in the IONIQ 5 N, reminds me of the old SEGA game "Daytona USA". It was an absolute hoot to play, had speakers right behind the seats, and if you selected the right view, you could even imagine that you were there! It even bogged down if you upshifted to early... This is finally a way to surpass that game in real life..... The whole discussion is pretty awesome.... but your discussion about the discharge rate (to output 478kW with an 84 kWh battery) was absolutely fascinating. I am curious, how many laps can you get at full noise on the track before needing to recharge? The regeneration from braking at 800 volts must put a fair bit of energy back in. I wonder how many CPU's this machine is running?!

Great interview. Shows Hyundai's approach at hiring talent and pushing the boundaries by allowing the exploration of ideas through engineering really pays off. I was a fan of the ioniq 5 when it was first released with the innovations, range look smaller than it really is styling etc etc. Then horoughly pissed off by the stupid postcode exclusion non buying policy they had originally on the batch relesse sales model followed by the stupid pay to test drive bs. So just ignored it completely since. But now this N model..... it's an impressive consideration. Now just have to figure out how to pay for one....

Put it up against any performance ice car with same power to weight (say a supra) and watch the supra sail past once the 5n hits that 260 limit and on a track day at some tracks that's very possible speeds ,some cars routinely hit 300 at eastern creek ,hell there's a gtr that trapped 190mph up that straight at roll racing lol granted it has 1500hp lol Not hating it ,just a shame it's limited. Hell even my 500hp fg xr6t could hit 300 on a big enough straight 🤔👌

Dual-clutch transmissions in ICE cars don't have a clutch pedal. They're faster than any manual. Heel-toeing is unnecessary even in an i20 N thanks to the computer controlled rev-matching, which is better than any driver, in all situations. Time to move on.

An 800 volt EV battery and a 400 volt EV battery with same KWH energy storage would be same physical size, because the both need same number of cells, but with more connected in series on the 800 volt battery. The thing is that the wiring could be smaller for same power because at 800 volts the current would be half - 400 KW at 400 volts would be 1000 amps, but 400kw at 800volts is 500 amps...

In a way implementing what some already call "an enhanced sound system" makes a lot of sense: people actually feel that a car is much faster when it simulates having a high revving ICE. This has been scientifically tested and proven with a bog-standard hatchback that overlayed the engines sounds with the sounds of a much higher revving rally-/racecar. People who drove the car with the "enhanced sound" on really thought they were driving much faster than they did without the system. Car manufacturers have known for quite some time that sound is an important part of the driving experience, so some of them have a specialized team that tweaks and tunes the exhaust system to make the noise more pleasant sounding.

See it buy the part and fix it myself. That said with 218,000kms on my model S and 68,000 on my model3 I've had 0 issues and been able to upgrade to more modern features for peanuts. I can even upgrade my model S to 100kWh lifting it's power output from 435kW to 480kW it's not cheap but as a fully supported and warranted upgrade.... It's tough to beat from any manufacturer. Carbies and distributor long gone all cars need proper diagnostic tools these days

It's mind blowing that this thing leaves even Porsche's EVs for dead on the Nurburgring both with consecutive laps charging etc.. The fact the tyres on those cars looked as good as they did with no real extra wear issues after two laps at full tilt was just incredible.. I'm no EV fan but with the fake gear shifts, pops and bangs etc etc I'd love to have a drive of one..

25:19 - that is such an important point. For those of us that have mechanical sympathy and drive by the seat of our pants, we need all the extra feedback (aside from accel changes) that we have become accustomed to or driving feels so disengaging we can't be bothered paying attention. BTW, this makes a nice change from some of your rants - that you can appreciate the technology and engineering and still call BS as needed is what makes your content interesting.

I have lost interest in EVs but this car would lure me in as it sounds like a car you can enjoy punting and just driving. Kudos to the engineering team for chasing the intangible enjoyment rather than just the fastest or the quickest round the 'Ring. By just backing it off a bit you avoid the headline numbers that kill enjoyment like a harsh ride thanks to ridiculous tyre profiles and caterpillar cylinders for dampers. Dunno about the fake sounds but it probably would be helpful to judge cornering entry etc..Have to try it and see for myself. Great interview and an engineer that is interesting to listen to. Some great insights into Hyundai following in the footsteps of the MX 5 and avoiding a soul less committee engineered car
