FUN WITH TONIC WATER & BLACK LIGHT
Objective: TO observe the fluorescent nature of tonic water, and how to quench it.
Materials:
* Tonic water (must contain quinine)
Clear cup
Black light
Salt
Safety Precautions: Perform only under adult supervision. Do not start at the black light, as ultraviolet lights can be harmful to your eyes.
Procedure:
Completely darken the room and pour the tonic water into a cup under the black light.
Add salt to the tonic water, while it is still under the black light.
Observe
Explanation:
The tonic water contains quinine, which is highly fluorescent compound. Black light gives off ultraviolet light, which is invisible to the human eye. Quinine has the ability to absorb ultraviolet light from the black light and convert it to visible light. Substances that have this ability are termed fluorescent.
The tonic water is especially beautiful under the black light while it is being poured. When salt is added to the tonic water, it quenches the fluorescence. The chloride ion of the salt reacts with the quinine molecule, producing a product that is not longer fluorescent.

quinine? is that drinkable?
@KidsFunScience
@KidsFunScience 6 жыл бұрын
Great question. Yes it is. Tonic water is a carbonated soft drink in which quinine is dissolved. Originally used as a prophylactic against malaria, tonic water usually now has a significantly lower quinine content and is consumed for its distinctive bitter flavour. It is often used in mixed drinks, particularly in gin and tonic. Take a look at the history section in this link en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonic_water

Isn't tonic water bad for teeth. Never thought it would look like this under a black light.
@KidsFunScience
@KidsFunScience 5 жыл бұрын
At first Tonic water had quinine dissolved in it for malaria, when it first came out. Today a lower quinine content is in tonic water, as most people take a pill for malaria. But quinine is fluoresce under ultraviolet light. Which makes it COOL! : ) As for is it bad for your teeth, I don't drink it, I only put Black light on it. Not sure. : ) Thanks

@KidsFunScience

Not sure why it would turn green. Must have something in it that makes it turn green. Try buying from another store and compare. Let me know the results. Thx
