How-to replace a broken dryer belt on a Whirlpool Dryer. If your dryer has just stopped working you may have a broken belt. Dryers have a safety switch that shut down all operations of the dryer if the belt breaks. This is an easy repair that you can do yourself.

Thank you for the excellent instructions. My drier was almost the same is your demo but enough info for me to get the job done. I did take a deviation. When putting the belt on with the drum in place (6:45) there isn't a lot of room for big guys. I drilled 2 holes on the left side. I then zip tied the tension arm in the up position with the zip heads on the outside. Once I got the front installed and in place and the belt where it is supposed to be, I cut the zip ties. Much easier than fighting the tension spring in small places.

Bob, thank you. We couldn't locate anyone local to work on our dryer due to COVID-19. So I watched this video which was virtually the same dryer as ours and was able to fix the dryer myself much quicker than if I had to figure all of it out. Thanks!

Excellent walk-thru, thank you Bob! Followed these steps with my Whirlpool dryer and got the job done. While I was looping it around the pulley and the tension wheel I did get my wife to hold the belt on the drum so it wouldn't twist, otherwise did this all by myself. Found it helped to put my left hand around the left side of the motor and my right hand on the right side. I made sure the belt wasn't twisted, made a loop working with both hands, passed it to my right to slide under the tension wheel as you showed, then passed the belt over to my left hand and pushed the tension wheel with my right hand until I could secure the belt around the pulley with my left. That was the only tricky part and it wasn't too bad. Thanks again!

Thanks for the video! I wish that I had watched this video (I watched several others) before I took mine apart. Yours is the only one that showed that you need to remove the bottom panel to release the door springs. They were keeping me from being able to remove the door and front panel.

#1: Thanks, thanks, thanks, for this video showing how to release the lower front panel. I had to slag through half a dozen videos before I found yours that shows this step. #2: However, my 1970s era Whirlpool dryer did not work the same as you show. I have only a single release, in the middle of the dryer, rather than the two you show 2" in from the edges. However with your advice here and the best flashlight since the invention of light (my cell phone), I found the catch and released it. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving, and Happy Dryer Day (for my family).

Not so fast. Modern appliances are garbage. Go pick out a new appliance. Read the reviews on it. It's garbage. Old washers and dryers are built like tanks, new ones are built like trash. They're worth hanging on to.

It's much easier not to remove the control panel from the top. Just remove the 4 screws on the black bracket at the back, lift it slightly then slide it slightly forward still attached to the control panel and top to disengage the hooks at the front of the dryer. Once disengaged move it back far enough to get to the door switch connector and the two screws on the top that hold on the front.

What was the purpose of taking apart the control panel? Did I miss something? I replaced my drum belt, gas valve coils, and ignitor and I did not have to take apart the control panel. I have a whirlpool dryer thats from the 90s I bought it brand new from sears back in 1999 It's a great dryer! Works like new since I replaced those parts!

I need directions opening a Whirlpool dryer Model #WGD4800XQ1, to replace the broken belt. My husband removed the back.. but any videos I watched described flipping the top UP, then remove front panel. Appreciate help.

Terry Montana remove screws from lint filter, then standing in front of dryer, reach arms around top of dyer, grabbing from the back and pull towards you. This releases top from the clips. Lift top panel. Then remove the two screws that holds the sides to the back.
@aliciabrown983

It's not as cut and dried as everyone will have you think, including 1995Benzo below. You have to watch a variety of videos until you find one that matches the dryer you have. However, going through the front and not the back seems to be the way to go. Your problem is how to flip the top up. This video shows you one way. Another way is to use a putty knife to depress a plastic catch found at the front of the dryer just under the top. That worked for me...this video would not work on my dryer.

Check all the moving parts, the tensioner wheel, motor pulley and any other part for some kind of drag. Make sure the belt is not twisted and that everything turns freely before putting it back together. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.

funbro1 no worries. That’s what I thought. LOL. Any idea if it’s just the hex screws on the sides? Looks like two easy ones to get to, one more further down the rails. Didn’t know if any screws were underneath, as I didn’t see any from the outside, but figured they may be inside. Belt is $80’ish, so trying to fix it DIY obviously. Thanks again!

how do you know if the belt is faulty, I have a loud clicking and drum isn't spinning
@funbro1
@funbro1 7 жыл бұрын
From the sounds of it your belt is broken. If you are hearing a noise then it sounds like the motor might be spinning but the belt is not doing it's job. The only way you can tell is by taking a look inside, but if it is not working what do you have to lose? Hope this helps. Thanks for watching

Up on the bottom down on the top. The easy way to tell is by putting the smooth side toward the tensioner pully then everything else will fall into place in the correct direction. Hope this helps, Thanks for watching.

And your model number is? Videos should be deleted that do not include a model number.
@funbro1
@funbro1 4 жыл бұрын
The “Model” number is “Whirlpool”. Many Models of the same brand are constructed the same way so to limit this video to a specific model by putting just one model in the title would not be very wise. I did however put the model number in the search so if you were to search for this particular model it would come up in your search. Hope this is detailed enough for you. Meaningless comments should be deleted. Thanks for watching.

@@funbro1 You present yourself as a knowlegable service technician, but you do not know (or for some reason don't list) the model numbers relevant to your video. Knowlegable service technicians are very specific about which model numbers are relevant to their video. Random poorly titled videos are just a waste of time for people looking for help.
@funbro1
@funbro1 4 жыл бұрын
@Michael Haynes You present yourself as knowledgeable person that would leave a common sense comment but you do not know (or don’t care to read the previous comment) what model you have. All of this was explained in my previous comment, if you had searched for YOUR model and it matched this video then more than likely it would show up on your search results. Random, poorly written comments (and irrelevant replies) are a waste of time for people trying to help others that would like help. A better question would have been “does this work for model “xxxxxxx”? Problem solved. Do you know what model you have????

Because a dryer gets about 1,000,000 times the vibration that does a computer case. Plus you open a dryer about once every 20 years, a computer case you open a lot. Plus a computer lasts five years if you're lucky. A much better question is, if they make dryers that last 50 years why can't they make a computer that can last that? Any more complaints about "conspiracies of the universe" that are out to get you? Since when is 8 screws "such a pain in the ass?" Obviously you are a software guy that doesn't know how to handle a screwdriver.
