Thanks for the very helpful video. My dryer sounded *exactly* like your dryer at the beginning of your video. After I took my dryer apart, and cleaned everything, I couldn't see that anything was obviously wrong. So, I put it all back together, and the ugly noise was gone - no replacement parts needed! : )

Thank you Sir. This 5-minute video explained in easy language and with great camera shots, exactly what was wrong with my dryer (or my wife's dryer) and how to fix it. I have never seen inside a dryer before and as you said, it would take more than a half-hour. Maybe two hours, tops! It went smoothly. No unanswered questions. No vague video clips or camera angles. All 'round, a great learning experience. Thank you., again. BTW, I am in Canada and everything comes as a kit, including both wheels, the belt, four of those triangular plastic spacers and the tension arm.

Thank you for your tutorial. I just did this repair by following along. I only had a couple of minor issues along the way. I had a hard time getting the triangular holding brackets onto the post properly and when I was trying to put the front back on the little clip things for the screw hole kept falling of and I would have to backtrack a few steps to fish them out from under the drum. All in all the repair took about an hour and my dryer works perfectly again. Thank you so much for this video!

Glad it helped. I believe that I also had a little trouble with the triangle pieces as well :-) Thanks for watching.

I repaired appliances before retiring and the only thing I fault with this video is the greasing of the replacement rollers. The roller bearings should not be greased as they are oil-light, which means they are porous, allowing oil to fill space in the bearing and lubricate the roller shaft.
@cowsongs
@cowsongs 7 ай бұрын
THANK YOU for this. This explains a lot! The first time I had my dryer open (for something else) I saw those rollers and assumed they must be somehow self-lubricating, because realistically, that drum is expected to run for years without service. Putting grease on there might plug up the pores in the bearings, so yes, no grease.

I just replaced the wheel and belt on my Whirlpool today using just this video. Gracias, amigo! I had a slightly bent bottom wheel that caused the barrel to los a bit of its seal. Also caused the bottom wheel to wear down its rubber and causing that awful noise. This video tutorial saved me money, and I appreciate you my man!

As a 20 something female, my mother didnt want to let me rip the back off her hoover twin tub when it wasn't working. I had watched my dad as a kid and changed a belt in my own. I snapped at her i knew what i was doing and could at least identify if dad needed to buy a belt on the way home, or hook the belt back on if possible. She was unreasonably impressed, but i spoiled the i told u so moment struggling to get the little protective square around the power cord to sit in the right spot and left the back off as dad was going to have to look at it anyway, the problem was not one i could identify. Thanks for showing me dryers are also very simple. I had no idea.

Your video couldn't have been more helpful. Once I heard the noise the dryer in your video was making, I knew that my dryer had a similar problem. I raced to a nearby appliance parts store and purchased a full replacement kit for $44. I installed the kit and had everything back in place within an hour or so. Given that my dryer is from 1999, it would not have made sense to pour $250 or more into having a serviceman repair my machine. So, thanks for your great video! Jeff

Thanks for the quick informative video! I just completed this repair tonight! You’re right the grommets from the old wheels were hard to get off and back on the new wheels. And to the hardest part to boot was on the last fn screw the @husky ratchet screw driver broke off its socket and fell down the lint trap! We had to use some ingenuity and take out the drum, secure the lid and flip the dryer over and let gravity do the trick! But all put back together and no more rumble thanks to you, definitely a new sub for the great video!

By the way, it's a perfect video. You can hear it, you have a friendly and enrolling demeanor, it's got a good pace, you can see everything, you know the pitfalls, and you even showed the cleanup! (Seeing what you did, I grabbed a vacuum cleaner and vacuumed up all the lint before starting!) I've got the parts in hand from Amazon and will be fixing my clunking monster very soon! In the meanwhile, I used some duct tape to hold the rubber in place on the drum rollers. It made it a little quieter too. It's a good stop gap solution! Thanks again! @@AlleyPicked

It’s easy !!! way easier than I thought, the most difficult part for me was all the hair stuck on the the rollers other than that maybe the triangle retainers getting stuck on the the indent closest to the out side when it has to go on the inside indent. Easy job, not my first wrenching experience but pretty straightforward for the average person. Spend the 30 bucks and if you don’t have the tools go down to autozone and pick up a 15 dollar set and one packet of grease at the counter and you’ll be good to go!!!

Can you rotate the drum freely when the dryer is turned off? Does the motor turn freely. Thats the key to be sure everything can be turned easily. Sounds like something is binding.

Is it possible that if there’s issues with the wheels that it may cause a burning smell? When I run the dryer and gives off a faint burning smell plus the knocking noise is just like yours in the video. My daughter and I are trying to do this together. Thank you for your help.
@AlleyPicked

Yes, If the wheels are not turning properly, the rubber on the wheels which turn the large round drum have excess friction which can give off the burning smell.

You should not use Grease on the rollers, the grease will attract lint/dust/hair etc & cause the rollers to lock again..Use dry lube such as graphite or silicone that is Temp resistant as well..(High Temp) or simple use nothing at all......I use a Drop of 3 in one, All temp silicone...FYI...Liked the video as well

Good video! My brother had bad rollers on his dryer for quite some time but continued using anyway. Now after telling me I just tried fixing it and noticed black particles from the rollers you mentioned are actually stuck or melted into the groove on the drum right where the rollers touch. Now after replacing rollers, idler pulley, and belt it still makes a lot of noise. Do you think those particles stuck to the drum are causing problems for the new rollers? I don't know how to remove it. I hope he doesn't need a new drum.
@AlleyPicked
@AlleyPicked 10 ай бұрын
Any stuck particles should be removed, Scrape them off without scratching up the drum. If the particles are really stuck, you can soften them using a hair dryer. When you put everything together, it should turn freely. If you turn the drum by hand, it should feel smooth.

Hey I hope you still respond to older videos, our dryers are closely identical. So the second wheel is supposed to have quite a gap in which the wheel can move forward and backwards? Before I took the drum out I was able to grab it from the inside and move it pretty well back and forth. Our initial problem was that it was making a medium noise as if a shoe was in it while it was running So it was turning just loud, now I have it apart like yours. Model WED5500SQ0
@AlleyPicked
@AlleyPicked Жыл бұрын
If I understand you correctly, you are asking me if the wheel on the right moves back and forth. Yes, the clips keep the wheel on the shaft and there is some play back and forth. I don't remember how much as this dryer is still functioning and I have not needed to take it apart again.
@cowsongs
@cowsongs 7 ай бұрын
I have an older Whirlpool, and yes, the right drum roller can move back and forth about an inch, while the left one cannot. That's normal. Just make sure the two plastic triangular clips are in place on both roller shafts. If one is broken off or missing, the roller wheel will move too far forward or backward.

Replaced belt, entire upper shroud with plates, rear drum bearing and support, lower felt, and entire motor assembly. It’s humming extremely loud and still making thumping noises. The dryer has no wheels and the blower fan is fine. The only thing I didn’t change was the tensioner arm and pulley which shows no signs of issue. I’m completely lost at this point 🤷🏼‍♂️
@AlleyPicked
@AlleyPicked 8 ай бұрын
Is it possible that your belt is the wrong size? One time I ordered from Amazon and they gave me a belt that was about 1 inch smaller that it was supposed to be. This causes the tensioner arm to rub against the drum.

The video was made well and very informative. However, IMO, 2 things were left out because this happened to me. When removing the 2 screws where the lint filter is, slow down and take extra care to keep hold of these screws to not drop them down that filter shoot. If this happens you have lost the screw or more work, taking more apart to get it back. And 2, there are sharp edges that can cut you. Be careful or wear gloves.

Ok my daughter and I just changed the rollers and the belt. We could not get the retainer rings on new rollers. Still sounds a little rough. Any suggestions?

If you were not able to install the retaining rings/clips, that may account for the rattling. They really need to be in place to keep the wheels from wobbling.

@@AlleyPicked thanks so much for your response!!! It’s a shame they don’t automatically come installed on the replacements.

Is the roller on the right hand side supposed to have any play on the shaft? Say about 1/2-3/4 of an inch?

You would need to take it apart to check. Good chance the wheels as described in this video are the problem.

It still might be those roller wheels. It will need to come apart to find out.
