PLEASE WATCH THE ULTIMATE 39 MINUTE FUNCHAL COCKPIT VIDEO: Eurowings Airbus A320 full approach and smooth landing on runway 05 at Funchal Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (FNC / LPMA) on Madeira Island in Portugal. Cockpit, pilots, charts, and sidestick views. With briefing. Filmed in 4k quality. Produced with 6 cameras. With ATC (air traffic control) audio and ATIS (automatic terminal information service) audio. ATC callsign is Eurowings 1BZ (Eurowings One Bravo Zulu). Commercial flight number (which is printed in the tickets) is EW 9600. Airplane registration is D-AIZV.
The Captain is pilot flying. The first officer in the right seat is the pilot monitoring.
Due to missing space on the island, parts of the runway had been built like a bridge which is supported by 180 concrete columns.

The charts presented in this video are the original charts used during the flight. Many thanks to Lufthansa Systems (Lido mPilot and Lido eRoute Manual) for the permission to show them in the video. This charts are for information purposes only and not for navigational use!
This video is for information purposes only. It does not substitute approved flight training. If you need general or type specific flight training, contact a flight school or a certified flight instructor. Due to technical reasons, the audio may be partly incomplete.
Thank you!

Superb as always! This ties in very nicely to a video Tom Scott did about this airport, you can watch him explain how the runway came to be made and then watch a superb landing on this channel! It’s rare that KZfaq recommends something I’ll actually like but I am so glad this channel was recommended. Stunning views, superb airmanship and an excellent camera set up. As an aviation enthusiast/geek I really appreciate you having cameras focused on the displays too. Keep up the excellent work!

I watch Pedro a Madeira Airport Streamer, so have seen many approaches so understand the difficulties faced, yours was just amazing and the landing smooth. I have to say Captain you show amazing communication skills with all your 1st Officers, what is always evident is your respect for colleagues. I’m sure for them it must be a great pleasure to be flying with you. Now 75 and having loved Aviation since the age of 10 I love that I recently found your channel and look forward to catching up with your videos. Thank You Sir ✈️

Thank you very much! Madeira FNC is an interesting airport and the approach to runway 05 is always amazing. Definitely a good idea to extend the pattern a little bit. In my eyes a very stable final approach. You were able to vacate the runway via taxiway B (other than planned). Good job! 👌🏻 Madeira is a nice island for vacation as well. I have been there in July 2021 and got the chance doing a private airport tour (accompany follow me car, views of the extended runway, fire station and so on). It has been an exciting afternoon ✈️❤️They also have emergency equipment below the plateau. Hopefully they don’t have to use it any time. There is also a funny story about the statue of Cristiano Ronaldo at the airport. They replaced it by a new one (you can google it). Obrigado for all your work. Already looking forward to seeing the next video. Maybe you can film a flight to snowy conditions in the future. Would be interesting and different to see the Airbus in icy conditions (anti-ice / de-ice before the flight) - Kiruna (KRN) 🇸🇪 or Kittila (KTT) 🇫🇮 would be an option. Thank you and have a great weekend!

Hello Cpt. Another beautiful video! Congratulations!🤩 Funchal is one of the most difficult airports in Europe. To fly the approach and landing so skillfully and beautifully is very impressive! I'm glad I stumbled across your site. because here you can see the professionalism of you CPt. and your FO can follow.👌 It's always nice when there's a new video. What I also think is great is that the approach video starts after leaving the cruising altitude! Great way to follow your work to the gate! If it's ok with you, would it be great to start the approach videos just before leaving cruising altitude? A video of the departure from Funchal up to the cruising altitude would also be great! 🛫 Thanks again for the beautiful videos! With this in mind, I wish you and your crew a nice week! Greetings from Styria! 🤗 Werner

Hello Werner, thanks for watching and the great feedback! Also thanks for your valuable suggestions. There will be more departure videos coming. The length of a departure video is usually determined by the content. If there are still interesting things to see outside, like in the Kos Island departure video, I keep the cameras on. The most interesting work on the flightdeck is usually finished sometime above 10000 once we start to fill in the precalculated times in the operational flightplan. But I keep your suggestion in mind. Have a nice day! Greetings to Styria!

Another passenger here who landed there before the runway was extended. If memory serves correctly it was a British Airtours/Caledonian Boeing 737. Most amazing and scary airport I've ever been to, there wasn't much runway left by the time we stopped and there was a long drop to the sea on the other side of the wall!

Hey, A very nice video as always. They just never get boring. I love seeing the approaches from the real cockpit while flying them in the flight simulator as well. For me it will take a little more than 1 year, I am currently in ATPL training. I have a question, when was the video recorded because I would like to see the one or other flight in the playback at Flightradar 24. Maybe you could even include the flight date in the future if it is not already somewhere and I am blind. :D

Another very professional video. I do like the pre-and post-flight discussion. And during the flight, there is a good mix of formal commands and informative conversation. Question - how many landings at Funchal must a FO perform before being permiitted to act as Pilot in Command? More, please.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! Upgrading to a captain and flying to Funchal is not interconnected somehow. In general, only the captain is allowed to land and takeoff at Funchal airport. The captain has to be experienced and needs an approved Funchal training in the simulator and afterwards an introduction flight to Funchal airport. Also, he or she needs to fly to Funchal on a regular basis to stay proficient and current.

Thank you for another wonderful video Captain! Your First Officer seemed like he was a good match for your professionalism and enthusiasm. It must be a joy to work with someone like that. Thanks to you both for sharing this beautiful approach with us! Was your plane partially loaded? It felt as if you had incredible braking compared to some other landings. Or maybe that is an illusion of runway width?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your kind words! You are right about the First Officer, I do agree 100 %. I do not remember the load. Usually the flights are very well booked because Madeira is a popular destination during the whole year. The actual landing distance was not that long because we had not to increase the approach speed a lot due to the wind and the flare went very well. Also the runway has an upslope and initially we used max reverse which both helps in the deceleration process. Have a great day!

Outstanding as usual. I note that both pilots seem to keep their hands on the joystick even when the A/P is engaged. Is that so you can take control immediately if the A/P disengages or is it just a comfortable place to rest your hand?

Yet again, awesome video. Thank you Like the 'Picture in Picture' addition too. Question: Why do you have to ask the Tower for a 'Visual' Approach, as if you had to get their permission? How would he know if you were cleared for the 'RNP' but you did a 'Visual' instead? And what difference does it make to him? Thanks again - looking forward to the next one...
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the great feedback! If you fly the RNP approach and follow exactly the procedure, you have to fly early at the MDA. With the visual approach, we could stay longer higher. If the approach is treated as a circling approach, Airbus procedure would be to fly with gear down and flaps 3 early. With the pure visual approach, flap and gear extension can be done much later. Also, with the visual, we could fly a slightly longer approach than published.

Thank you sir. Excellent video as always. It was a pleasure to watch. May I ask you some questions: Why did you change from managed speed to selected speed on final? Is it captains landing only at this airport due to the difficult approach?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your question! In Funchal, the captain has by regulation of the Portugies authorities to do the landing and the takeoff. Selected speed eliminates speed target changes due to changing winds and the groundspeed mini function. Usually, I fly with managed speed.

Amazing video Captain as always I always look fwd to your videos and have prob watched all of them Following from the Uk 🇬🇧. Can I ask when you get updated QNH readings do you do anything with the plane and what does it mean in terms of aviation ? Thank you 😊
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great feedback! When the QNH changes during our approach or during the departure, we immediately set the new QNH at our instruments in the cockpit. A change of 1 hpa is equal to a change of 30 feet at our altimeters. A change of QNH in general means that the air pressure at the airport has changed. When we have set the correct QNH at our instruments, the indicated altitude at the runway threshold would be the published elevation of the threshold. If the QNH would be off by for example 1 hpa, the indicated altitude at the threshold would be 30 feet above or below the published elevation of the runway.

Geniales Video!
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын

Great Video! I have a question concerning the autothrust… Can you decide whether you want to keep on or off the autothrust for landing? I thought you always has to turn off the autothrust for landing…. Thanks a lot and as always what a stunning video.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great feedback! The pilot flying decides if she or he wants to fly the final approach with autothrust on or off. Airbus recommends to keep it on during all phases of flight, including a manual landing. But we have to stay proficient in doing final approaches with autothrust off. So we usually do some approaches with autothrust on and some with autothrust off on a regular basis.

What a smooth landing, is this airport particularly difficult for you to land? It looks tricky. Great video as always, thank you for sharing your view from the cockpit it’s so interesting.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
This airport is tricky due to very variable winds. In addition, winds are very often changing in speed and direction over a short distance. This is also the reason why the airport authority published very detailed wind limits for the landing.

Theoretically, you’d apply the balked landing procedure when you have passed the MAPt, correct? So even shortly after MA566 (not yet in the base, i.e. before BT1) you’d still follow the balked landing, and won’t just turn left to MONEC? Also, why would you want to go selected speed on the approach to compensate the GSmini effect? Isn’t GSmini beneficial - what are the reasons for you not wanting to have it? As always great videos and thanks for answering my questions! I deliberately write my questions in english as I think others might also benefit from your informative answers. Thanks for the great insights!
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 10 ай бұрын
This is a very theoretically question. And theoretically, your assumption sounds right. The general idea is to get somehow to MONEC without hitting an obstacle or another airplane. Before starting the base turn, a right turn to MONEC would make no real sense. But as soon as the turn starts, it would be a good solution. In Funchal, too much wind on final approach or windshears may lead to a go around. Instead of flying to MONEC, Tower usually suggests another visual pattern for a second try. During approaches in Funchal, I prefer selected speed with an increment instead of the managed speed target. In Funchal, the wind is turning and changing so fast that the managed speed target would move up and down all the time.

They issue expected approach times. This is the time when we have to expect to start the approach. The time did not fit to the current speed. So we reduced the speed and even expected a holding or delay vectors.

No, it is not blocked. But there is no problem of an involuntarily use of the rudder. In transport category airplanes, we use the rudder only for the flare during crosswind landings or for single engine flight.
