This is possibly the most comical scene in the book, which was sadly not exploited in the 1980s series, nor here either. In the book, Blackthorne becomes incensed at the suggestion that he might want a boy for comfort, something which baffles the Japanese in the room. A couple of retainers discuss amongst themselves that maybe he's like the Koreans who prefer animals. Maybe they should suggest that to him? The other retainer says no, probably best not to do it, what if they make him even more upset. The first retainer suggests they don't actually have to ask him - just bring a duck to the room and then see what the barbarian does with it. In the end they decide to err on the side of caution.

I remember a documentary about a Japanese doctor that was first introduced to western medicine sometime in the 1800s and commenting (paraphrasing) "if I had known just how complex was the human body then I would not have dared practice medicine before." Just something off the top of my head but always found that cool, one of the positive things that came out of cultural interactions.
@henrykanning2455 ай бұрын
Western medicine improved dramatically from the 1600’s to the 1800’s. Also John Blackthorn appears to be quite common, mentioning the streets of London and whores. This would limit his education and access to quality medicine. Germ theory only became accepted universally after around 1880.

Yup, if you want the man to speak realistic English for the time, most listeners would be confused. Although we were exiting Middle English into a more modern variant, some things would still be difficult to understand. One of the reasons Shakespeare's works still remain popular, is that his first sonnets weren't published until 1607 (7 years after these events in Japan), so modern speakers can still (mostly) understand the original works. Remember also, when you hear the characters speaking "English", they are really speaking Portuguese in the TV series.

There are a few concerning comments that indicate that Japan was ok with homosexuality. This is a gross oversimplification for what was in most cases, older males being allowed to take sexual advantage of young boys. It is not something to be admired when it happened. Such 'companions' were told it was their duty. You will note in the old series she uses the word 'boy' not 'male'; the implications have been softened here. In the interest of fairness, Japan seems also to have had no specific problem with genuine homosexual loving relationships; though examples of it are rare, and it was certainly not what was being offered here.

In the book, and in the original miniseries, Blackthorne reacts with considerable anger at the suggestion he be provided a male bed partner. In today's climate, I'm entirely unsurprised they changed that for this series; reacting with horror and outrage at being asked if one wants a male companion would definitely not be allowed in any film or series being made today. I've always been amused at Richard Chamberlain acting out that scene in the 1980 adaptation, given his sexual preference.

I think the modern one is better in terms of its CGI but, in my opinion, it relies too much on the action and it all feels a bit forced. The older 1980s version is more about the romance and the adventure and taking time with explanations. A part of the book and the older 1980s series that it made it so interesting was Clavell's time spent delving into Japanese history, politics and philosophy. Also in the 1980s version Blackthorne and Mariko had far better chemistry. Right from the get go you can see that Blackthorne, this strange barbarian from across the seas, piqued her interest. This new 2024 Mariko sounds cold and distant and the new Blackthorne sounds like he's just reading through the lines in the scenes as fast as he can. Also in this politically correct era we live in I doubt many of the non-PC sections of the book and the 1980s series could ever be shown today. Not unless they wanted it to get cancelled.
