The Swedish J sound is a very common. The Swedish letter J has a different pronuciation than the English J.
And the Swedish J sound also comes up in some Swedish letter combinations.
For example the DJ in Djur is pornounced as the Swedish J sound. The D is silent.
Also the combinations -RG is pronounced with the Swedish J sound. Like in the Swedish word Berg.
Learn all the rules to take your Swedish pronunciation to the next level.

The change G -> J before front vowels has in fact happened in English as well. For example, YELLOW. Its cognates in other Germanic languages often still have a G.

6:50 I don't blame y'all Swedes for feeling that way -- not one bit. I may be a Texan from the U.S.A., but I must admit that I too get sick and tired to you-know-what of hearing things mispronounced correctly. I hate to brag, but it's better to be honest -- I love learning foreign languages so much, and I do get very stickler-like with pronounciation, hehe.

Fin video, eftersom att många uttalar bokstaven "J" med ett litet tyst "D" framför, som engelska ordet "jeans" där folk säger "djeans" - - vilket då vore helt inkorrekt på svenska - - eftersom bokstaven "J" härstammar från boktaven "I" (i). Så skönt att någon kunde klargöra detta en gång för alla

About moose and elk; here in Canada they are two different animals. An älg is what we would call a moose, whereas elk are.quite different, although they are in the same family as moose and deer and caribou. (I just started tutoring a couple of months ago to learn Finnish, and my teacher was so surprised when I told her that they aren't the same. 😂) Elk are also called Wapiti in some First Nations languages.

Swedish has some issues with the difference between animals 😂. Bläckfisk work for all "fishes that have ink" like octopus and squid as well. So there is a lot of confusion 😂😅🙈
@corinna007
@corinna007 2 жыл бұрын
@@FunSwedish Haha, well in this case the confusion is understandable; "Älg" sounds a lot closer to "Elk" than "Moose", which I believe is also another First Nations word for the animal that made its way into our English.

Vivo en Suecia y siempre que me preguntan si pronuncian bien mi nombre necesito explicar que la pronunciación de mi nombre (Jimena) en español es más una H en sueco. Con los hablantes de árabe es común que me llamen Jemina (suena a Yemina), así que es caso perdido en cualquier idioma jajaja. Sencillamente les digo que la pronuncien como quieran, porque me da flojera explicar lo mismo mil veces. Saludos y buen video! :D

Actually the unpronounced letters do modify the neighbouring ones somewhat. Lj in ljus is pronounced like Spanish ll in lluvia. H in hjälp is not pronounced but it makes the j stronger, throatier as in I yelp for help! Djavel has no real d but the j is articulated on the teeth. Likewise unpronounced r's make the next letter thicker as in American English or Hindi. Many unpronounced letters have a psychological effect on the general tone of the word. The g turning into j also exists in Italian : medaglia.

Hello, I have a question! In the word "Borg" why do we pronounce as bOrg like the "O" in english? I thought the letter "O" in swedish was pronounced as "U" so following the alphabet rules I'd say "bUrg" ... I'm studying swedish on my own so I'm sorry if it sounds like a dumb question. Thank you.
@FunSwedish
@FunSwedish Жыл бұрын
That is a GREAT question! You just stumbled upon a KEY rule of Swedish pronuciation. EVERY vowel has a "short" and a "long" sound. The long "O" sounds more like U. (And you get the long sound when you only have 1 consonant after). The short "O" sounds more like O (in Spanish). (And you get the long sound when you only have 2 consonants after the O). If you want to know ALL about Swedish pronunciation and a little bit more structure you could try our beginners video course: elansutbildning.teachable.com/p/swedish-for-complete-beginners

I guess you could say "Naglar mot en griffeltavla", ie the literal translation. Gothenburg is from the Latin form Gothoburgum. If you go back in time, it would actually have sounded similar in Swedish too. If the city had existed 800 years ago, it would have been "Gautaborg" and at least the first g would definitely have been hard.

Entertaining video, although I do disagree with you when it comes to the pronounciation of the letter J! I would argue that it actually should be pronounced more the way you said the letter's "name", at least in front of vowels, and the same goes for the letter G in front of soft vowels. I would also argue that the combination hj should be pronounced more like an i (in Swedish), like i-elp (hjälp) and i-ärna (hjärna). That way you're able to hear the difference between words like "jul" and "hjul", as well as "gärna" and "hjärna".
@Vinterfrid
@Vinterfrid 5 ай бұрын
I do disagree with you as regards the pronounciation of the combination 'hj' - it should NOT be pronounced like an i (in Swedish), like i-elp (hjälp) and i-ärna (hjärna). I have never ever heard anyone pronounce it that way.

Why in most other "Alphabet videos" they pronounce the letter "J" as "Yee" and not as "Zheezh"? Are you sure that the official pronunciation of this letter in the modern Swedish alphabet is "Zheezh"? Also, if you listen to yourself carefully in this video, then on 0:28 your are pronouncing it as "zheezh", then on 1:15 you're saying "Yee", and on 4:26 it's like you're saying "yzh" (hard to write it, bit definitely neither "zheezh" nor "yee"). So this all is very mixed up. Since the Russian language (my native) has the letter "й" which is the same sound as in the word "Gjort", it's easy for me to say these words that you provide, however, I don't understand what is the correct way of saying the letter "J" in the alphabet (my teacher says it's rather "yee" and you are saying it's "zheezh") and why do you say something like "yzh" on 4:26.
@fartreta
@fartreta 2 жыл бұрын
[ʝ] (the wheezing j sound, in linguistics called "voiced palatal fricative") and [j] (as in "yee" - "voiced palatal approximant") are so called "allophones" in Swedish, i.e. neither of them are more correct than the other and they are more or less interchangeable. And as you heard she used both of them, most certainly unconsciously. I'm sure that I make use of both too without even thinking of it (I'm from the Gothenburg area) 🤷‍♂️ Anyway there doesn't really exist an "official pronunciation" of Swedish. But I suspect you think of rikssvenska (Standard Swedish)?
